Craven businesses flouting no-smoking laws could be hit with a fine.

Environmental health officers from Craven District Council are carrying out inspections across the area to ensure compliance with the ban.

Under the Health Act 2006, lighting up in smoke-free places is illegal and companies must ensure proper signage is displayed in such areas.

Coun Carl Lis said: “When the Health Act was introduced it received a lot of media coverage, which helped raise awareness among the general public, but now attention to the rules seems to be waning.

“The council has received complaints about smoking in taxis, for example. We need to make sure people remain aware of the law and obey it.”
