Grassington film company Cheeky Monkey Films has landed itself a dream TV series – finding Yorkshire’s perfect pint!
The series of half-hour documentaries for ITV Yorkshire begins next week and shows Appletreewick’s David Aynesworth – owner of The Craven Arms – touring the county in his classic 1930s Bentley, nicknamed The Brigadier.
His mission is to seek out 20 beers for the Great Craven Beer Festival to be held in his pub from October 17 to 19.
In programme one, David seeks out the finest malt in Castleford – essential for a perfect pint – discovers a one-man-band brewery tucked away in an old barn in Wharfedale and, in Sheffield’s historic industrial heartland of Kelham Island, finds a brewery fighting back from the floods of 2007 with an aptly named brew and a Clydesdale horse called Big Lad. The rest of the series sees him venture to breweries big and small. There’s a trip to the Yorkshire Wolds to a farmer who grows his own malting barley, a stop off for a pint of Madonna’s favourite tipple at Timothy Taylor’s, in Keighley, a trip to York to see how tourists get to grips with a true Yorkshire tipple and an outing to Leeds to meet youngsters who have celebrated their first year of brewing by opening their own pub. Series producer Katy Metcalfe said: “This area has much to offer in the world of beer.
“In the series we visit Copper Dragon Brewery, in Skipton. Although only five years old they have enjoyed meteoric success, in part due to the passion of a rare species in the brewing world – a woman! Ruth Bennett is as fabulous on film as she is in real life. They are a great team with a great product.
“We also enjoyed a visit to possibly the newest kid on the block – Dark Horse Brewery, at Hetton. Richard Eyton-Jones, who began his brewing life at Goose Eye Brewery, near Keighley, has recently perfected his own brews from a beautiful Yorkshire Dales stone barn. And, on the day of filming, David was privy to a world first – to sample the first ever pint of Hetton Ale. Needless to say, it went down a treat!
“As a beer drinker myself, a programme about beer is a producer’s dream,” said Katy.
“Of course, there’s had to be an awful lot of research and for once, I’ve had loads of offers of help. I think beer is not seen as the drink of old men in flat caps anymore. It has a broader appeal, particularly as a natural drink for the health conscious, because the main ingredients are just malted barley, water, hops and yeast. “We’re hoping that the series will appeal to one and all. David is a fabulous, slightly quirky, character racing around Yorkshire in his beautiful sports car. He’s funny, up for a challenge and incredibly passionate about real local ales.”
Executive producer Paul Edwards said: “It’s not just for the real beer enthusiast; it’s a light-hearted education for those who are missing out on the taste of good ale.”
Yorkshire’s Perfect Pint is being shown on ITV at 10.40pm on Thursdays, October 9, 16, 23 and 30.
