Artist Steve Gumbley has come up with a novel way of drawing attention to the joys of bus travel.
As part of this year’s Open Studios event, he has transformed a bus stop in Malham into a creative sculptural canopy using logs and saplings.
The temporary installation, which includes bus maps and incorporates the existing bench, will be used by passengers until Sunday.
Mr Gumbley has much experience in making artworks for public locations, using a wide variety of techniques and materials.
His “Travelling Light” at Malham was one of a series of works commissioned by Gargrave-based Art Connections to launch the sixth North Yorkshire Open Studios event. The organisers hope the sculpture will encourage visitors to take advantage of the bus service between Malham and Skipton, Open Studios will see more than 120 artists across the region throw open their doors to the public, including 21 from Craven.
“Open Studios offers a unique opportunity for the public to meet individual artists in a diverse range of studios and settings, to gain an insight into how their work is produced and what inspires them,” said Christine Keogh from Art Connections.
The event is also being used to unveil a new artwork project, called Meander, spearheaded by Shanaz Gulzar and Steve Manthrop.
They want volunteers to film the entire route of a marathon walk through the Dales, using state-of-the-art headband-mounted HD video cameras. What the cameras record will be determined by where the wearer is looking and what engages their interest. The artists say the final film could be one of the longest ever made.
Studios will be open between 10.30am and 5.30pm on Saturday and Sunday and full details are available from nyos.org.uk or ring Art Connections on 01756 748529.
