Settle Orchestral Society is giving two summer concerts.
The programme will feature Beethoven’s Concerto in C major for piano, violin and cello. The unusual scoring of this work means it receives fewer performances than it deserves, but the orchestra is fortunate in being able to call on the services of three local musicians to play the solo parts.
The pianist will be David Arkell, who began playing at an early age and later took up the organ. He has studied with David Graham, head of the organ faculty at The Royal College of Music, and Marlene Fleet, formerly an international concert pianist.
Since 2006, he has been on the staff of Giggleswick School, where he is chapel organist. Violinist Tracy Keeley, the leader of the orchestra, attended Chethams School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music.
A playing career with French orchestras, including the Monte Carlo Philharmonic, followed.
On returning to London she played with string ensembles and directed chamber music courses at the American School in London before moving to Ilkley.
The third soloist is the orchestra’s principal cellist, Bob Buller, of Clitheroe. He studied with Emma Ferrand at the Royal Northern College of Music, before becoming a freelance IT consultant.
He is a member of the Pennine Trio and performs with professional string quartets, as well as playing for orchestras and choral societies. The concerto will be preceded by Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, and followed by Bizet’s Symphony in C. The first concert will be at Settle College on Saturday and the second is on Saturday June 26 at Christ Church, Skipton.
Both concerts start at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought on the door or from Cave and Crag, Settle, Bentham Post Office and Alley Books and Bass and Bligh in Skipton.
