Workers carrying out a refurbishment at Silsden Town Hall have uncovered impressive original features.

An ornate wooden roof structure and arch window were revealed when the workmen removed a suspended ceiling in the first-floor main hall.

“We intended to replace the suspended ceiling but now that these splendid original features have been uncovered we will be leaving them on show for all users of the hall to enjoy,” said Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for the environment.

“They provide height and space to the room and give it a stately presence.”

The £300,000 refurbishment will feature a revamp of all rooms including the kitchen, the provision of new toilets and the installation of a lift to the first floor and a fire escape.

A ramp at the front entrance will make the Kirkgate building more accessible for the elderly and disabled.

Once work is complete, Silsden Library will be relocated to the ground floor of the hall, offering children’s reading sessions, IT facilities and other events during the day.

Coun Thornton said the project, which is expected to be finished by October, had received a lot of support from local groups and users of the building.

“This scheme will bring back to life a tired building that is part of Silsden’s heritage,” he added.

“It will create a community building that is busy, vibrant, accessible and an asset the town can be proud of.”

The facilities – which will include a modern stage, lighting and sound system – will be available for hire for events.
