PUPILS at Steeton Primary School have remembered the 1914 Christmas Truce in a unique project linking 10 schools around Europe.
The highlight of the project was an event when the schools involved sang Silent Night together via international video conference link.
To prepare for the video call, schools in Croatia, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Ukraine exchanged video recordings of a verse of Silent Night and another traditional carol.
Pupils in each school learned the songs in the different languages before the call.
The call was projected on a big screen in the school hall so that all the children in the school could take part.
The work forms part of an eTwinning project called Christmas Truce and other work included studying the events of the First World War and sharing their research with the other partner schools.
In particular, they have found out about the Christmas Truce of 1914 when the soldiers stopped fighting and shared presents, played football and sang carols together.
Children also made and exchanged Christmas cards.
Teacher Diana Linford is the project co-ordinator at Steeton School and is an eTwinning ambassador for the Yorkshire region.
"Pupils really enjoyed sharing the songs live via the video call. This made our link with the other schools very real.
"We have all learned a lot, both about the war, and also about the similarities and differences between our schools today," she said.
