AUSTWICK: Derek and Celia Coultherd, 015242 51215: Women’s Institute: Austwick WI welcomed Linda Sawley as guest speaker at the August meeting. She gave a very interesting and amusing talk about shoes. She spoke about the history and her passion for shoes which dates back to her childhood and brought along many samples from her collection. Several members enjoyed a pleasant walk around the Ingleton area led by Elizabeth Booth. The walk concluded with supper at The Game Cock where a number of other members joined them. The meeting on September 10 will include a talk by Penny Elger.

Bowling Club: On Saturday, Austwick Bowling Club played host to Burton-in-Lonsdale and lost by four games to five. On Sunday, Austwick is away to Kirkby Lonsdale. This is the last of the season’s pre-planned inter-club fixtures.

BOLTON ABBEY: Priory Church: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 6.30pm Evening Prayer. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer. Liquid Worship – the fun family service held on the first Sunday of the month – resumes for Autumn on Sunday, September 6 at 9.15am.

Village fete: Bolton Abbey Village Fete will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31. The church is collecting items for the stalls. They include books, tapes, CDs and videos, children’s toys and books, jams and preserves, bottles, raffle and tombola prizes, bric-a-brac and homemade craft items. BRADLEY: Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369: Family Day: There are only two weeks to go until Family Show Day, so make sure you fill in your entry form for the show classes. Volunteers are still needed to help with various duties on the day of the show, in particular manning the car park and the admission gates. Autumn lectures: This year’s autumn lectures will be presented by Kevin Illingworth (BA) and the subject will be the traditional buildings of the North-West and the West Riding of Yorkshire. Content will include the development of traditional farmhouses and farm buildings, including materials used. Quiz night: A recent quiz night in Clapham Village Hall raised £363 for Bentham and District Pet Rescue. A big thank you goes to all those who attended and also to those who helped organise the event including Clapham Village Store, which sold tickets for the event, Kristen and Rob Bullock for shopping, cooking and serving the delicious main course and Ray Hull for printing the tickets. The bar was run by Richard and Justina Sexton, Sheila Maywood helped to wash-up and all the puddings and raffle prizes were kindly donated by volunteers and supporters of Bentham Pet Rescue. Finally, a big thank you goes to Stuart Marshall, who as quiz master, delivered a fantastic and well-researched quiz and was ably supported by wife Barbara.

Wedding celebration: St James’ Church, Clapham, will hold a free exhibition entitled A Celebration of Weddings over the August Bank Holiday, Saturday August 29 to Monday August 31 inclusive, between 10am and 5pm. EMBSAY WITH EASTBY: Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197: Embsay churches: On Sunday, the Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am communion service will be led by the Rev Roger Fox while at St Mary’s Church there will be a celebration of Holy Communion at 9.30am. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a communion service at 10.30am and will be open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation between 2pm and 4pm.

Community Library: The Community Library is able to offer a free home delivery to residents of Embsay and Eastby who have difficulty is accessing the library because of ill health or disability. The library can arrange for the Home Library and Information Service to get in touch with you about their voluntary service. Parish council: The August meeting of the parish council was attended by a significant number of residents who were concerned about the latest proposal to build houses behind Laurel Croft, despite two earlier schemes being rejected. There were worries about road safety, principally speeding through the villages and the dangerous junction where Station Drive meets East Lane/West Lane and Skipton Road. One of the council’s sub-committees has also been inspecting safety issues with regard to the recreation ground and nature reserve. Residents from the Rockville/Wood View area of Embsay raised the question of why Yorkshire Water had started work in their streets before the letters notifying residents of the work to be undertaken had been received.

Gardening Club: With the annual show fast approaching on Saturday, September 5, the club is looking for contributions for the tombola. If you have something to donate it would be helpful if you could leave it in the porch at 12 Dalacres Crescent, Embsay, any time between now and the show or, failing that, bring it to the village hall on the morning of the show between 9am and 11am. The club – which is for anyone with a garden or an interest in gardens and doesn’t require any expertise – always welcomes new members. Subscriptions can be paid at the show or at the Friday evening meetings. The £5 annual subscription gives half price entry to the monthly meetings (£1.50) and 10 per cent discounts on plants at Twin Locks Garden Centre. Steam Railway: The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway’s last Fish & Chips Special of the summer will run this Saturday. The popular service is run in conjunction with Skipton’s Bizzie Lizzies and advance booking is essential.

Women’s Institute: The recent WI outing was to Marks in Time: our M&S Heritage – a fantastic display featuring 130 years of Marks and Spencer’s artefacts. The centre was built in 2012 on the Leeds University Campus. Michael Marks was born in Poland in 1859 and in 1884 he arrived in Leeds where he opened his first stall in Kirkgate Market. In 1851 Tom Spencer was born in Skipton. Some years later in 1894 Michael Marks invited Tom Spencer to form a partnership with him for a mere £5. In 190951 they opened their first Leeds store in Briggate where it remains today. From there, members went to Kirkstall Abbey. It was an excellent day.

FARNHILL AND KILDWICK: Joyce Wood, 01535 635880: St Andrew’s Church: On Saturday there will be fundraising afternoon teas in the parish rooms from 2.30pm to 4.30pm in support of the Church Mission Society and Jigsaw Kids Ministries in Manila. On Sunday, services will be Holy Communion at 8.15am and at 10am. Tea and scones will be served from 2.30pm to 4.30 pm in the parish rooms and the church will also be open to visitors.

Farnhill Methodist: There will be no service at the church on Sunday.

Scarecrow Festival: The Farnhill and Kildwick Scarecrow Festival was a great success and all the money raised will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The White Lion thanks everyone for their support. The prizewinners are: most scarecrows identified – Malcolm Green and Stella Osbourne; best scarecrow (public choice) – Mrs Rollo; best scarecrow (judges’ choice) – The Lion.

GARGRAVE: Sally Jennings, 01756 748098: Football starts: Gargrave AFC played its first game of the new season on Monday against Cononley Sports. Its first Saturday fixture this weekend will see the team visit former Division One opponents Silsden Whitestar. Kick-off is at 2pm. Both clubs were promoted to the Premiership at the end of last season. The first home game to be played at Gargrave will be on Monday, August 24, which will be against Settle United at 6.15pm.

Fell race: The popular Gargrave show fell races will take place on Saturday. The first race, the under nines, will leave the main ring at noon, with the under 12s, under 14s, under 17s and adult races following on their heels. Cash prizes are up for grabs as well as the Weatherill Shield for the highest placed local male from any of the categories and the McKell trophy for the highest placed local female from any of the categories. Current holders are Will Atkinson and joint holders of the McKell trophy are Katie Atkinson and Charlotte Barrett. The winner of the senior race to the top of Sharphaw and back will be awarded the Silentnight trophy. The current holder is Jimmy Craig of Hellifield, a member of Barlick fell runners.

Sequence dance: The next monthly modern sequence dance will be held in the village hall from 7.30pm on Saturday. Entry is £4, which includes tea and biscuits, and everyone is welcome to attend.

St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, the church will hold a BCP Holy Communion at 8am and a morning service at 10.45am. There will also be a pet service from 4pm at St Peter’s Church in Coniston Cold. It will take place outside in the churchyard if the weather is good and refreshments will be provided afterwards.

Bingo: The next bingo session in the village hall annexe will take place on Wednesday from 7.30pm. Entry is free and there are tea and biscuits served during the interval. Books are priced at 80p each and there are prizes for both a line and full house. There is also a flyer at the end of the evening with a cash prize on offer for a line, two lines and full house. Everyone is welcome.

Charity ceilidh: A NSPCC ceilidh, with Sean Gilligan’s Band, will be held from 7.30pm next Saturday, August 29, in the village hall. Tickets are £10 per person or £5 for children and can be obtained from committee members or Poppyfields Florist on 01756 748071. A pie and peas supper is included in the entry fee and there will also be a licensed bar and raffle.

Jumble sale: A jumble sale will be held in the village hall from 10am on Saturday, September 19. The entrance fee is 20p and donations towards the sale can be accepted at Gargrave Village Hall on the following days: Saturday, August 29, between 10am and noon, and Friday, September 18, between 2pm and 6pm. Please note that the organisers can only accept items that can be easily carried by one person.

Parish council: The council talked about the maintenance and upkeep of Harrison playing fields. Resurfacing maintenance work to some areas in the children’s play area is finished with new swings and a handrail near the steps on the zip wire installed. Maintenance on Paley Green Lane is well under way and highways reported that more work will be undertaken soon. The council is renewing its efforts to establish ownership of the footbridges over Tems Beck and it will write to the owners on either side of the beck to find the extend of the land they own. The next meeting will be held on September 8 at 7.30pm in the parish rooms.

St Alkelda's: Next Saturday, St Alkelda's Church will hold a walking treasure hunt around the village. It will set off from the church at 6.30pm and will last until 8pm. Please sign the list at the back of the church if you require supper. Admission is £1.

GLUSBURN: Annual meeting: Glusburn Community and Arts Centre will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, September 2, at 7.15pm in the meeting room at Glusburn Institute. All residents of Glusburn and Cross Hills are invited to attend this meeting and can to vote and nominate directors to assist with the running of this historic building. GRASSINGTON: Sheila Denby, 01756 752605: Bowling Club: The 2015 league season for Grassington and District Bowling Club ended with the team finishing fourth in the third division. League Cup competitions are taking place in August and the team are trying to regain the Allan Ellis Trophy. The latest club competition, the James Trophy in memory of Raffles, was won by Doug Green who defeated Becky Huff in the final. Margaret and Eric James presented the trophy. Last year’s winner Tony Nixon had sadly passed away the previous week, and everyone at the club extended their sympathies to his widow Sue and his family. A coffee morning in aid of club funds was held at Church House, Grassington, on Saturday. The club’s oldest member Colin Maude has moved to be near his family, and he was thanked for his great sportsmanship and encouragement to younger members. INGLETON: Sue Brown, 015242 41835: Rubbish blamed: It has come to the notice of the residents of Ingleton who were affected by the recent flooding in the area of Laundry Lane that a contributory factor was an accumulation of rubbish, including a mattress, a stepladder and a large log of wood, which was in the mouth of the culvert which passes under Laundry Lane. Perhaps the fact that the Fire Service and police had to be called out might make people more aware in future.

Women’s Institute: Ingleborough WI president Sue Brown welcomed members and visitors to the August meeting and introduced the speaker, Hanneke Dye. Her subject was Born a Hidden Child, and she told of how her Jewish family had suffered during the war in Holland. She emphasised how people should never forget the Holocaust and how important it was to teach children and people everywhere to turn against racism. She was thanked by Carol Mann. During the break for tea and biscuits, the competition for a decorated plate was won by Lynne Woodburn, with Sheila Davison and Sue Fitzsimmons second and third. Arrangements were discussed for the tea party to be held at the centre on Sunday, September 13, to celebrate the centenary of the WI and the group show on September 26. Bookings are being taken for the craft workshop day on October 17 and if anyone is interested in taking part please get in touch with Sue on 41835. The September meeting will be a talk by J Ellison and the competition is for a small hand knitted item.

Church news: There was a short, and very moving, ceremony to commemorate VJ Day at the War Memorial on Sunday. More than 20 villagers attended. Candles representing John Hocking, Leslie Benson, Eric Waites and George Green were placed around the Fountain, which is the village’s war memorial, and poems and prayers were said.

Food Bank: It is hoped that a distribution point for food parcels will be opened at Limestone View.

Memorial concert: A concert in tribute to Langcliffe poet Jim Hacobian will be held in Langcliffe Church next Saturday, August 29, at 7.30pm. Admittance will be free but a collection will be taken to go towards providing a suitable memorial stone to mark his final resting place in the churchyard. SETTLE: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639: Guided walks: The Friends of Settle-Carlisle Line have organised three guided walks this weekend. No reservation is necessary but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. The first is on Saturday and is an 11-mile moderately strenuous from Horton to Settle via Moughton Scar. Participants will leave Horton-in-Ribblesdale Station at 9.21. The second walk is also on Saturday and is entitled Norsemen, Navvies and North Yorkshire folklore and is a 19-mile moderate walk taking in Gauber (nature reserve and Viking farmstead), Great Douk Pot, Chapel-le-Dale Church, Winterscales and Batty Green (navvy settlements). This circular walk will leave Ribbblehead at 10.06. On Sunday, there is an eight mile moderately strenuous walk in Swaledale. Tot Lord Trail: Throughout August, guided tours along the Tot Lord Settle Town Trail will take place every Wednesday. They will be led by Richard Whinray. There will be a charge of £4 per person, with all proceeds being donated to the NSPCC. Firm footwear is recommended. Open day: Settle Fire Station is holding an open day on Sunday from noon to 3pm. There will be a range of talks during the day as well as family fun activities and refreshments available. Creative session: Settle Sessions is holding a second poetry writing session for children next Thursday, August 27, from 2.30pm to 4pm. These free, fun and friendly activities are aimed at children under 10 and last about one-and-a-half hours. The children will be helped and encouraged to write their own poems. The organisers are also hoping to ask some of the children to read their poem at the next Settle Sessions held at The Folly in Settle on Friday, September 11. Photographic Group: Framed photographs by members of Settle Photographic Group are on display in local shop windows from until Wednesday. This year’s Find The Photos event has more than 80 pictures. They are all located around the middle of Settle and provide some interesting entertainment for both visitors and residents. The pictures will then be displayed at the group’s annual exhibition in Clapham Village Hall over the Bank Holiday weekend, August 29 to 31. SILSDEN: Linda Berry, 01535 654643: Hall friends: The recently-created Friends of Silsden Town Hall are already welcoming a major boost in interest and use of the venue since its recent modernisation. A new website, promotional leaflet and a planned autumn and winter programme of events and activities are all poised to see the hall’s role as a lively community centre grow still further. The Friends are also reviving the old Town Hall tradition of dancing when they launch a series of monthly afternoon tea dances on Monday, September 7, in a joint initiative with the Andrea Wortley School of Dance. Everyone is welcome, dancers and non-dancers. Sessions will run from 1pm to 3pm and will cater for all standards of dancers including beginners. Holy Trinity: Morning Prayer is said at 9am on weekdays at Holy Trinity Church at the top of the High Street in Skipton. All are welcome to come in to this quiet, contemplative start to the day but do check the noticeboards on the church gates – particularly during the holiday season – for any changes. Holy Communion, at 8am on Sunday, will be led by the Rev Jenny Smith and the rector, the Rev Veronica James, will officiate at the parish communion service at 9.45am. Said Evensong is at 6pm. Toddle into Church is taking a break for the next two Tuesdays and midweek Holy Communion on Wednesday at 10.45am will be taken by the rector. Two summer exhibitions are still inside Holy Trinity which are worth a visit. In one, fashion designs created by A-level Craven College students are on display, while the other is dedicated to photographs which seek to capture the spirit of the Dales through its landscape and architecture.

TOSSIDE: Hall dance: Winners of the raffle at the last dance were J Shuttleworth, A Chandler, M Newbould, B Hargreaves, D Holgate, T Carr, J Thompson, S Westall, S Greenwood and P Taylor. The next dance is tomorrow at 8pm when Bill Johnston will play at the dance for the first time, replacing the band on the printed programme.

UPPER WHARFEDALE: Sheila Denby, 01756 752605: Women’s Institute: At the last meeting of Threshfield and Linton WI, Jackie Sugden, of the Wine Shop, Grassington, talked members through the process of wine tasting, with members tasting a white and red wine. Jackie talked about her journey from the wine industry in Australia to Grassington. The September meeting will be an open meeting for all WI institutes and will be held in Cracoe Village Hall on September 9. The speaker will be Dulcie Lewis, an author and entertainer, with a talk entitled Powder, Paint and the Corset. All members and guests are welcome.

Council meets: Threshfield Parish Council will meet in the institute on Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Art exhibition: The 25th exhibition by Buckden Art Group will be held in Buckden Village Institute from next Saturday, August 29, to Wednesday, September 2. The exhibition will be open 11am to 5pm daily. Admission is free, with donations to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. There will be more than 100 original paintings to view with a special section for the Flowers of the Dales Festival. New members should contact Angela Falshaw on 760259. The autumn term begins in Buckden Village Institute on September 7, at 7pm, where help is available for beginners.

Recipe booklet: A cakes and biscuits recipe booklet is being sold at £2 a copy in support of the Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival, a charity event mainly supporting the village hall, church and primary school. All recipes have been provided by the baking ladies of Kettlewell.

Children’s parties: Kettlewell resident Lyn Picton is looking for someone to take over the children’s party events. This requires an ability for organising, planning and running children’s parties for Hallowe'en and Christmas. For more information, contact Lyn on 761221.

Camping weekend: A family camping weekend will be held in Upper Wharfedale from tomorrow to Sunday. There will be organised farm visits, bike rides, guided walks and camp fires. The next sessions will be on Wednesday and next Saturday, August 29. There will be a family barbecue next Friday, August 28 from 6pm. It will be a Jacob’s Join so bring what you like and share it with others. There will be games for those who want them. There will be a curry night on Saturday, September 5, and tickets cost £5 for children and £10 for adults. Soft drinks are free and bring your own alcohol if you wish. The craft group has finished for the summer and will return on Monday, September 14. Yoga is held each Tuesday at 6pm and Zumba each Thursday at 7.30pm. Bacon butties are available each Saturday from 11am.
