Tennis Club: Austwick Tennis Club has had a successful summer. In the Bradford Parks League, with just two fixtures to play, the ladies team will finish at least second in the first division, but could still come top. Individually, Austwick players Cathy Holmes and Chloe Robinson are both among the top ranked players in the league. The men’s team has also had a successful season and will finish third in division three with Tom Horsfall ranked fourth highest player in the division. In the Wharfedale (mixed doubles) League, the A team finished third in division one, behind the much larger clubs of Ilkley and Heaton. The B team, promoted to division two last year, avoided immediate relegation thanks largely to an end-of-season victory over table-topping Ilkley B. Meanwhile the C team, despite losing some of their stronger players to the A and B teams, managed to avoid bottom spot in division three with three wins and a draw from the 18 fixtures. The club is now looking to encourage new members to enjoy Sunday morning social play at the club from 10am to 1pm. Society meeting: Austwick Field and Local History Society will meet in the parish hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm when Tom Lord will talk about Butterflies on a Dales Farm. Visitors are welcome and admission is £2.

Bowling Club: Austwick Bowling Club played its last match of the season on Saturday. This was for the Captain’s Trophy and was won by Peter Morton, with runner-up Ernest Booth. Weather permitting, those interested can continue to meet at the green on a Saturday at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start.

BOLTON ABBEY: Priory Church: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said) and 10.30am Sung Eucharist. There will also be a choral evensong at 4.30pm, led by the Priory Choir. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am.

BRADLEY: Liz Zieboll, 01535 636369: Family Show Day: The Family Show Day committee would like to thank all the volunteers who helped to make this year’s show a resounding success. Apart from the more visible jobs such as manning the gates, car park and hot food tent, a lot of work went on behind the scenes. A special thank you goes to Andrew Symonds and family for their involvement in the show over the past 15 years and for their continued support and advice.

Women’s Institute: The recently formed Bradley Women’s Institute is attracting a steadily growing membership. The group meets on the third Monday of each month in the village hall and has a varied programme of activities. BURTON-IN-LONSDALE: Jean Thornber, 015242 63033: Proms screening: Burton-in-Lonsdale Village Hall Committee is arranging a live screening of Last Night of the Proms on Saturday from 7pm in the village hall. There will be a “posh” Jacob’s Join supper, with guests invited to “dress to impress”. This is a free event, but donations towards village hall funds would be appreciated.

CARLETON: Bollywood night: A Bollywood Night will be held at Carleton Village Hall on Saturday, September 26, at 7.30pm. There will be a talk and cookery demonstration by celebrated Kashmiri cook Yesmein Bagh Ali which will be followed by an authentic curry. There will also be Bollywood dancing. Photo contest: Entries in the village’s photography competition will be on display in St Mary’s Church next Saturday, September 19, from 10am to 4pm and next Sunday, September 20, noon to 4pm. Entries can still be submitted at either Coffee Pot at St Mary’s Church, tomorrow between 2pm and 4pm, or to 12 Chapel House Mews (behind The Mill) on Saturday. Entry forms are available from Carleton Village Store or Carleton Pharmacy. You can enter as many photos as you wish (£2 per photo) but each photo requires a separate entry form. The event is a fundraiser for St Mary’s Church.

Hospice money: A total of £400 was raised for Derian House Children’s Hospice by Rosie Hull and friends when they provided refreshments in the village hall during the exhibition held by Settle Photographic Group. She would like to thank everyone for their support.

Bethel Chapel: Bethel Chapel’s harvest celebrations begin on Saturday, September 26, with its harvest supper at 7.30pm at the chapel. The speaker will be Michael Cornall, who will also speak at services on Sunday, September 27. These include the 10.15am junior church service, the 11am family service and the 6.30pm evening service. St John’s: On Sunday, St John’s will hold a morning worship at 11am, led by John Hopkinson. On Monday, Toddlers Praise will be held in the church from 2pm to 3.15pm.

Beer festival: This year’s Cononley Beer Festival will be held in the institute and Cononley Sports Club on October 2 and 3. It promises to be even bigger and better than previous years.

COWLING: Charity sale: New2U’s half-price sale finishes on Saturday. The focus for September is on electrical goods, all of which have been PAT tested. Usual opening times apply.

Companions: Cowling Companions have resumed their weekly Wednesday meetings in the village hall, starting at 1.25pm with gentle exercise. On the first Wednesday of the month, there is bingo at 2pm while the other Wednesdays feature games or quizzes. This Wednesday, Alwyn Pickles will give a walk on Settle gardens and Craven churches. This starts at 2pm and the price is £2.50 including refreshments. After a very successful excursion to Lancaster and Morecambe, the next outing will be to Barton Grange on November 6. Churches Together: The annual nominations for the Rev Malcom King Shield have begun. During September anyone can nominate someone who has made a significant voluntary contribution to the community during 2014-2015. Although sponsored by the churches, this is a community award and anyone can be nominated. EMBSAY-WITH-EASTBY: Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197: Pre-school playgroup: The pre-school playgroup’s family fun day will be held next Sunday, September 20. It will be staged in the village hall from 2pm to 5pm. All funds raised will go playgroup funds.

Embsay churches: On Sunday, the Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am service will led by Susanne Platt while at St Mary’s church, there will be a communion service at 9.30am. On Tuesday St Mary’s will hold a communion service at 10.30am and the church will be open for refreshments and conversation between 2pm and 4pm. Smiley Faces has resumed on Fridays between 1.45pm and 3.15pm for pre-school children. The Methodist Chapel is running an Alpha Course for anybody interested in discovering what Christianity is about. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 22, starting with lunch at 12.15pm.

Parish council: The parish council will meet in the village hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Police Surgery: PCSO Ruth Pearson’s next village hall drop-in surgery will be on Monday between 6pm and 7pm. There will no drop-in surgery at Samuel Taylors this month.

Fell race: The annual Embsay fell race will be held next Sunday, September 20. Spectators and entrants are welcome.

Carpet bowls: The carpet bowls club meets every Monday and Friday between 10.15am and 12.15pm in the village hall on Main Street. New members are welcome.

Bingo night: The next cricket club bingo night will be held on Saturday in the village hall. Eyes-down will be at 7.30pm and all proceeds will go to the club.

Steam Railway: The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway will hold its annual 1940s Weekend this weekend. Both Embsay and Bolton Abbey stations will have re-enactments and vintage vehicle displays.

Village Pump: The Village Pump - the over 50s group - will meet in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Ballroom dance: The next dance dance is tomorrow from 8pm in the village hall with the entertainment being provided by Elizabeth Harrison. Entry is £6.50 which will include supper and a mug of tea.

Flea market: A flea market will be held on Sunday between 10am and 4pm in the village hall. Entry is 50p.

St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, the church will hold a BCP Holy Communion at 8am, which will be followed, at 10.45am, by a morning service.

Bingo: The next bingo session is on Wednesday from 7.30pm in the village hall annexe. Entry is free and books are priced at 80p each. There are prizes for both a line and full house. There is also a flyer at the end of the evening with a cash prize on offer for a line, two lines and full house.

Pantomime registration: Registration for next year’s pantomime will take place from 6.30pm next Thursday, September 17, in the village hall. The 2016 show will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and anyone who wants to be involved (children and adults) should attend with their fee of £10 for the season.

Tree Festival: Following the success of last year’s event during the Dickensian Christmas Festival, Grassington Congregational Church has been invited to host the Christmas Tree Festival again. The invitation will be discussed at the October meeting.

Forties Weekend: Dancing in the town hall, music in the streets, vintage military vehicles and classic cars, re-enactments, and live music in the pubs are all part of this year’s 1940s Weekend, which will be held from September 18 to 20. New season: A mystery trip is the first outing today in the Grassington Friendship Club’s new season of events. Andrew Swinscoe will speak on The History of British Cheese at Church House next Thursday at 2.15pm.

Seniors activities: The Hub provides activities for senior people with door-to-door transport. Lunch Out with New Boundaries has outings and events. WAGS speaker: Chairman of the Town Hall Trustees Andrew Wilson was the speaker at the meeting of WAGS on Tuesday in the Congregational Church coffee lounge. He told the meeting about plans for new events and classes at Grassington Town Hall.

Indoor bowling: Grassington Town Hall is the venue for indoor bowling on Tuesday, September 29, at 2pm.

Cinema season: Grassington Community Cinema had its first show of the autumn and winter seasons last Saturday in the Octagon Theatre. The next films to be shown are on Saturday, October 3. These are Boyhood at 7pm and The Spongebob Movie for children at 4.30pm. Tickets are £5 and £2.50 for children, with family tickets at £10 available from The Hub or on the door.

Dickensian Festival: Dates for this year’s festival are December 5, 12 and 19.

Glub Club: Penyghent Gun Club met in Horton Quarry on Sunday. E Sharpe was the marshal and also the winner of the event with 25 kills. R Barwick, A McLernon and R Carr tied for second position with 23 kills each. K Humphrey was third with 22 kills. R Carr was the winner of the pool shoot. The away day shoot against Caton, due to take place on September 27, has been cancelled.

LOTHERSDALE: Over 60s: Last Wednesday, 26 members travelled by coach to the Millstones, near Harrogate, where they enjoyed an excellent lunch followed by a singalong. A session of bingo was also enjoyed. The next meeting will be in the village hall on Wednesday when Alan and Carol Walker will present A Couple of Tykes.

Young Farmers: Lothersdale Young Farmers’ Club held a walking treasure hunt around Sutton-in-Craven which was set by Tanya Hunter. The club will hold its 81st annual show in Chapel Field on Saturday. Gates open at noon.

SETTLE: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639: Annual meeting: Settle District U3A will hold its annual general meeting at the town’s Victoria Hall next Thursday, September 10. Coffee will be served from 10am, with the meeting starting at 10.30am. New members are welcome.

Guided walks: The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line have arranged two guided walks this weekend. On Saturday, there will be a Kirkby Stephen Circular walk via Smardale. This is a 14-mile strenuous walk, leaving Kirkby Stephen at 10.34am. On Sunday, there will be a geology walk following the trail of the famous Norber Erratics back to their source. The Erratic Trail is an eight-mile moderate walk, departing from Clapham at 10am and returning from Horton. No reservation is necessary. Dolls house sale: A range of dolls house items are currently being offered for sale at Settle Parish Church during the Tuesday coffee morning sessions from 10.15am to 2pm.

Settle Sessions: The next Settle Sessions event is tomorrow at 7.30pm at The Folly in Settle. The evening will bring together rising star Kim Moore and doyenne Meg Peacocke who is still publishing poems in her eighties. There will also be an open mic slot featuring local writers. Poppies concert: There will again be live music at Poppies Cafe on Saturday when Dan Wilde returns. The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.

Society tickets: Settle Operatic Society’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie fast approaching and, to coincide with the launch of bookings for the show, there will be a special coffee morning at Victoria Hall on Saturday. All the proceeds will go to Victoria Hall. There will be facilities available to book tickets, with members, patrons and vice presidents having priority from 10am to 11am and the public from 11am to noon. Coffee will be served from 10am. On Saturday night, the society invite you to a horse race night at Victoria Hall, with the first race taking place at 7.30pm. Open days: The Settle Friends Meeting House, on Kirkgate, is taking part in the Heritage Open Days scheme. The building will be open tomorrow and Saturday between 10am and 5pm and on Sunday between 1pm and 5pm. There will be guided tours and exhibitions showing the history of the building. This is a free event. Also, tomorrow at 7.30pm, John Asher will give a talk about Conscientious Objectors In North Craven: 1914-1919. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Women’s Institute: Settle WI had an amusing meeting during which Sandra Fox recounted details of her visit to Buckingham Palace on the occasion of the WI Centenary. She wore the dress, jacket and fascinator that she had worn that day and then told us of her encounter with a lady from Gwent who was wearing an identical outfit. The speaker, Trevor Kent, astonished everyone with stories from his years as a meter reader. Adverse weather, naked ladies and a lone corpse were among his encounters which had his audience enthralled.

The Folly: On Sunday, there will be free entry to The Folly between 12.30pm and 4.30pm as part of Heritage Open Day. There will be special activities, including guided tours of the outside at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm as well as other family activities. Visitors can explore the fascinating 17th century house with its exhibitions and museum collections and enjoy rummaging in the dressing up clothes. There will also be a chance to view the work of the late Ken Jelley, a much admired local photographer. Ken took a series of black and white photographs throughout the year 2000. A selection is on display on the second floor of Folly until Sunday.

Victoria Hall: Next Thursday, September 17, Holy Moly and the Crackers will take to the stage for an evening of folky, waltzy, punky, fiddle-flying, Cajun fun. Music of an entirely different genre will be on offer on September 26 when West Yorkshire Savoyards return with their production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic Savoy opera The Gondoliers. Benji Kirkpatrick, from Bellowhead, brings his show Bendrix to Settle on September 27. On September 25, the unusual and critically acclaimed play Beryl - a romance on two wheels will be performed, celebrating the life of Beryl Burton - the greatest woman on two wheels. Family evening: North Ribblesdale RUFC will host a family evening tomorrow to mark the England v Fiji match. There will be fun rugby games, a face painting, food, a happy hour bar and the opportunity to watch the match live on large screens. The event will start at 6.30pm.

Folk Club: The Three Peaks Folk Club will mark Sally Day next Saturday, September 19, with a special night of music and songs which were favourites of folk club founder, Sally Wright. The evening starts at Settle Social Club at 8.30pm and admission is £5. Guest artist is Anna Shannon.

Messy Church: A messy church session will take place next Sunday, September 20, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm at St John’s Hall. Messy church is a free event, including a meal, craft activities and a chance for families to come together and celebrate together.

Iyengar yoga: A new term of Iyengar yoga sessions will start on September 21. The Monday sessions take place at Friends Meeting House from 12.30pm to 2pm for mixed ability and from 2.15pm to 3.30pm for beginners. Age UK: On Thursday, October 1, from 2pm to 4pm at Victoria Hall in Settle, Age UK North Craven will host a unique event to mark UK Older People’s Day. The aim of the event is to celebrate the contribution made to the community by people in later life. There will be information from local organisations on display as well as information on how to make the most of the services on offer from Age UK North Craven and other community groups in Settle and the surrounding areas. The event is free and is aimed at the community and at people working with older people either as volunteers or as professionals Special guests will be the Golden Oldies (known as the GOs to their friends). The GOs started out as an over 50s light exercise group and now provide entertainment, costumed and choreographed song, fun and dance all over the North West. Members of the group say being part of the GOs has given them fun, purpose and a new lease of life. Organ recital: Settle Parish Church will host an organ recital by Paul Fisher on Saturday, October 3, at 7.30pm. Entitled Melodies All Sorts, the programme will feature melodies from classical and popular music arranged for organ including Mozart, Vangelis, Strauss, Fisher and others. Admission is free with a retiring collection for the organ fund.

Coffee morning: Why not go along to an autumn coffee morning on Saturday at 9.30am in Carmel House, Wesley Place, Silsden. There will be a cake stall, raffle, tombola and books.

Amnesty meeting: The next meeting of Silsden Amnesty Group will be on Monday at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church. The group will be finalising arrangements for the annual coffee morning, which takes place next Saturday, September 19, from 9.30am to 11.30am in the church hall. The campaign this year is for the release of Dr Mohammed al-Roken, a human rights lawyer and professor of constitutional law, arrested and charged in 2012 for supposedly “attempting to overthrow the government” of the United Arab Emirates. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Cards will be available to sign, asking for his release.

SKIPTON: Women’s Institute: Skipton with Stirton and Thorlby members visited Skipton Dalesway WI. Speaker Linda Peak, of the Vintage Wash House, Skipton, took members back to a time when there were no washing machines. Also, last month, some members attended the open gardens event at Carleton Grange. They were very impressed with the beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees and the orderly vegetable plots and greenhouses. A cream tea was the finishing touch. At the next meeting on Tuesday, members will be entertained by Spellbound, with Gordon and Anne Sharpe, and the competition will be for a local photograph. Meetings are held in the Soroptimist Rooms, Skipton, every third Tuesday of the month and visitors are welcome.

Oddfellows: Skipton District Oddfellows will hold an evening of horse racing from 8pm on Saturday. Place your bets and win some prizes. The next craft afternoon will be from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday. Holy Trinity: Holy Trinity Church will help to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain on Sunday, together with local members of the Royal Air Force Association and townsfolk. A short parade will start at Chapel Hill at 5.30pm, progressing to the cenotaph for a wreath laying and then into the church for a special service of remembrance and thanksgiving at 6pm. Earlier in the day, worship begins with 8am Holy Communion, followed by Parish Communion at 9.45am at which prayers will be given for the Queen’s long and successful reign. Morning Prayer is said at 9am during the week and mid-week Holy Communion takes place at 10.45am on Wednesday. The informal weekly session for pre-school children, Toddle into Church, is at 2pm on Tuesday.

Lacemakers: The Craven Guild of Lacemakers welcomed a new member at its August meeting. Several members will be at the Yarndale event at Skipton Auction Market over the weekend of September 26 and 27, demonstrating lace making and organising an exhibition of the guild’s work. Speakers Club: Craven Speakers Club’s first meeting of the season started with a humorous wedding speech by Alfie Moore. This was an opportunity for Alfie to practise his speech for his mum’s big day. Bill Marwick followed with a considered speech titled Pretending. A lively topics session followed the coffee break when the speakers were asked to give their opinion on a news event which ranged from Cecil the Lion to the European migration crisis. The next meeting will be held on Monday at 7.45pm at the Soroptimists Rooms in Otley Street.

Gardeners Club: The first presentation of a new season is Films of the Dales, back by special request. It will take place in the Soroptimist Rooms, Otley Street, on Wednesday, at 7.30pm. Annual membership is £5, which is renewable in September. Meetings are held on third Wednesday of the month and admission is £1.50 for members and £2.50 for visitors.

STEETON: Flower Club: Members and friends enjoyed a warm and sunny day for their annual trip which this year was to Arley Hall in Cheshire. The gardens were at their most spectacular and the tour of the house was very interesting. A dozen or so enthusiastic newer members and friends have attended classes at the Hub in Steeton during August and learnt new skills in flower designs. The autumn season gets off to a good start at Sutton Village Hall on Thursday, September 24, at 7.30pm, when David Robertson from Rossendale will be demonstrating autumn colours. Visitors are welcome.

Methodist Church: Saturday’s coffee morning at Steeton Methodist Church raised £195 for Macmillan Cancer Care. Many thanks go to organisers, helpers and supporters. The 10.30am service on Sunday will be taken by the Rev Alan Raine. There is a Junior Church every week at the same time as the service.

SUTTON-IN-CRAVEN Coffee morning: A coffee morning will be held at the Sutton-in-Craven Community Centre, North Street, at 10am on Saturday.

Art Club: Sutton Art Club will meet on Wednesday. Rachel McNaughton will lead a workshop at 7pm in the Community Centre, on North Street, and entrance is £3.50.

Littondale Show: Potato plants in pots for entry in the Littondale Horticultural Show should be taken to Falcon Inn, Arncliffe, tomorrow between 8pm and 9pm. The show is on Sunday and schedules are available from the Falcon and entries are accepted between 8am and 11am. It is open to visitors from 2pm and there are home-made refreshments New choir: Buckden Singers are hoping to start a young people’s section or training choir, open to children of primary school age, with older children able to join the main choir. Church cash: The annual duck race held in Arncliffe in July raised more than £500 for the funds of St Oswald’s Church. The next fundraising event is an afternoon tea at the home of Tony and Lynda Harker in Halton Gill on Sunday, October 11.

Whist drives: The new season of Buckden whist drives will be held on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, starting on Wednesday, at Buckden Village Institute. WIGGLESWORTH: Community Centre: The picnic bench provided by The Rotary Club of Settle is now installed in the grounds and was well used at the recent barbecue. Nikki from Bharat Restaurant in Bradford provided a wonderful curry meal that was enjoyed by 50 villagers on Saturday. She was helped by a small army of friends and it turned out to be a really good night. The evening raised almost £500. The clean up on Sunday left the hall and its grounds looking brilliant and thanks go to everyone who helped. Bacon Butty Saturdays have proved very popular so organisers have agreed to continue as long as they get enough volunteers to run them. The monthly Meet and Eat runs on Wednesday and in the evening it is the friendly quiz. If anyone would like to learn patchwork and quilting, a new course is being held one Sunday each month, starting on September 27. Details are available from Judith on 01706 218060.
