BARNOLDSWICK:
Rotary Club: In a Saturday night fight in Bradford city centre, a policeman found himself struggling to restrain a man who turned out to be a British welterweight boxing champion. The policeman was Mark Allsop who told Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians that when he joined the West Yorkshire Police he underwent drill training that didn’t happen now. He described his progress in a 31-year career, being promoted sergeant and then to inspector and chief inspector. Mr Allsop, who served in Bradford, Keighley, Halifax and Wakefield, retired from policing in 2011 and now works for Yorkshire Water.
St Andrew’s: On Sunday, the 10.30am service will be led by Mrs F Oliver and the 6pm service will be a united Hope Barlick Service in the Majestic Church. The toddler group will meet tomorrow from 9.30am to 11.30am.

BOLTON ABBEY:
Priory Church: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 4.30pm Evening Prayer. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer.

Film Club: Bradley Film Club will show ET The Extra Terrestrial (PG) tonight at 6pm in the school hall. Admission is free and snacks are available to buy. There is also a loop system.
Family Show Day: Clubs and organisations seeking donations from the proceeds of this year’s show should place their requests in the Family Show box in the village store by Monday. The committee will meet at 7.30pm in the village hall to consider all funding applications. Everyone is welcome to come to the meeting and become a member of the committee.
School news: Well done to Archie, Charlie, Will, Molly, Emily, Daniel and Oscar who represented Bradley School and the Skipton area at the cross country races in Giggleswick. They all finished in the top 13 and Emily, Mollie, Daniel and Archie have made it through to the finals, to be held in March. In addition, Emily won a first place and Daniel a third place. The school is collecting tokens from promotional 500g tubs of Flora Original, Light and Buttery. For every 50 tokens, the school will receive a Samsung Galaxy tablet.
Table top sale: St Mary’s Church will hold a fair and table top sale in the village hall on Saturday, November 14, from 10am to 3pm. Any individual or organisation who would like to have a table for crafts, bric-a- brac and books are very welcome. The cost is £10 per table. CARLETON:
Movie night: Saturday is movie night in the village hall. This month’s film is The Imitation Game. Seating arrangements now include tables for drinks and space to bring your own comfy chairs. The bar opens at 7pm for drinks and snacks and the film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £4, from the village shop or on the door.
Coffee and cakes: Next Thursday, October 29, there will be community coffee and cakes at The Swan Inn, from 9am to 11.45am. Proceeds will go to a cancer charity.
Halloween: Next Saturday, October 31, Carleton Community Umbrella has organised several events in and around The Swan Inn for Halloween. There will be a free children’s disco from 2pm to 4pm and a scary ghost walk from 8pm to 9.30pm. Tickets cost £3 each and can be purchased in advance from The Swan Inn and Carleton Village Store or pay on the night. The walk will be followed by a free Halloween Party with live band from 9.30 pm. Fancy dress is encouraged.
Bonfire celebrations: Carleton Bonfire and Fireworks will take place on Saturday, November 7. The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm and the fireworks at 7pm. Admission is £5 for adults and £2 for children (pre-school free).

CLAPHAM: Rory-Joe Daniels, 015242 51135:
Park Association: The new playpark shelter was installed early in September. It makes a nice addition to the park and the association has decided to keep the older shelter and restore it to a reasonable condition. One of the goalposts has been mended and the rotting timbers on the benches will also be renewed. The need for maintenance and fundraising is ongoing as the “witch’s hat” needs a new bearing. This and other issues will be discussed at the next meeting on Saturday, December 12, at 4pm in the Bunkbarn Bar.
Quiz night: Seven hundred pounds was raised for Clapham and Newby Village Hall funds at a recent quiz night in the hall. This means the hire charges for the hall can be kept down in the coming year. The village hall committee thanks everyone who supported the event and quizmaster Stuart Marshall and his wife, Barbara. The quiz was won by the Peach family.
Pumpkin competition: If you are feeling spooky, the New Inn Hotel, Clapham, is hosting its first-ever pumpkin carving competition. At any time this month you can take your pumpkin to be displayed outside the hotel with a chance of winning a £30 Vue gift voucher as well as a ‘trick or treat’ candy bundle. Embsay churches: On Sunday, the Methodist Chapel’s 10.30am communion service will be led by Archie McAdam while, at St Mary’s, there will be a communion service at 9.30am. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a quiet communion service at 10.30am and the church will be open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation between 2pm and 4pm. Smiley Faces will meet tomorrow between 1.45pm and 3.15pm for pre-school children their parents, grandparents and carers. The Methodist Chapel’s Friendship Club is still temporarily suspended due to ill health.
Saturday buses: A new Saturday bus service is due to commence this weekend. It will be operated by York Pullman on behalf of Dales & Bowland CIC and will form part of the X75 Skipton/Harrogate service, albeit with a different route number, 14, to serve Embsay. It is hoped parishioners will take advantage of the new service. Obviously if it is not well used it will not survive. Departure times from Embsay will be 10.55am, 1.55pm and 4.15pm.
Trees and shrubs: It the responsibility of all householders in Embsay-with-Eastby to ensure that their trees, shrubs and bushes do not endanger or impede pedestrians, passing motorists and cyclists. Please remove all overhanging and blocking growth from the ginnels, paths, lanes, roads and pavements.
School buses: Children who do not qualify for a school bus pass can apply for a paid permit to travel from Embsay to Skipton and back on the Castle Coaches school bus. Telephone County Hall and ask to speak to the Schools Transport Team. Permits cost £380 a year.
Steam Railway: Hallowe’en Specials will be running next Saturday, October 31, daytime and night-times, and also next Sunday, November 1. Advance booking is essential. Santa Specials will commence on Sunday, November 29, and again pre-booking is vital.
Pre-School Playgroup: This year’s grand raffle tickets are on sale at the paper shop and from parents and staff. St Andrew’s Church: On Sunday, services will be Holy Communion at 8.15am and 10am. Also on Sunday, the church will be open from 2pm to 4pm so people can see the recently completed reordering in the nave.
Village Pump: The over 50s group, The Village Pump, will meet in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.
Beetle drive: A beetle drive will be held in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute next Friday, October 30, from 7pm.
Parish council: Farnhill Parish Council has received a reply from North Yorkshire County Council to its request for a no parking sign for the turning area at the junction of Main Street and Grange Road. NYCC said it could only install signs that were prescribed by the Department for Transport and that ‘no parking turning area’ was not permitted. The only way it could prevent parking was by installing double yellow lines, but this involved a lengthy legal process. It said the parish council could arrange for its own sign to be attached to the wall, but the sign would have no legal standing. The parish council resolved to put up a sign. Craven District councillor Pat Fairbank was unable to attend the meeting, but has been in discussion with Alan Sutcliffe (lead member for waste management) over waste collection points. The clerk was asked to arrange a formal meeting with ward councillors Patrick Mulligan and Pat Fairbank and possibly Cllr Sutcliffe to bring the matter to a conclusion. The parish council is concerned that the policy and practice was put together on the basis of false information. The parish council discussed the type of seat to purchase for Lower Arbour and resolved to purchase a brown Timberpol Seal Phoenix seat at a cost of £392.77. Timberpol is a wood replacement composite which looks like wood but is maintenance free. The parish council approved the clearance of the brash pile at Lower Arbour at a date to be agreed by the contractor. The work to the paths and seating area will commence in the next couple of weeks and the contractor will be asked to start on the seating area. A site meeting will then be arranged to achieve the best way of proceeding with the path. The new light at Parson’s Bridge has been connected and is lit but the clerk is to inform NYCC that there is still a hole which requires filling. A request has been made to consider the purchase of a projector for use at the annual parish meeting and parish council meetings, but it was resolved to raise the matter at the next meeting when discussing the budget. Craven District Council has written to advise the council about a change in the procedure for notifying parish and town councils of planning applications. It will send them by email rather than the post. The parish council is to ask to continue receiving paper copies as it has no facilities to print the large sheets of paper used for plans. Cllr R Bramley reported that the grass had been cut at the play area and there were no issues of concern. He also reminded members that he would appreciate any pictures of Farnhill that he could put on the website. The next meeting will be in the institute on Tuesday, November 3, at 7.30pm.

Coffee morning: A coffee morning will be held in Gargrave Village Hall between 10am and noon on Saturday. All proceeds will go towards the redecoration of the building.
Sequence dance: The next monthly modern sequence dance will be held in the village hall from 7.30pm on Saturday. Entry is £4 per person.
Flea market: The next flea market is on Sunday between 10am and 4pm in the village hall. There will be numerous stalls displaying bric-a-brac, antiques, plants, crafts and homemade produce. Entry is 50p and refreshments will be available.
St Andrew’s: On Sunday, the church will hold a BCP Holy Communion at 8am and a morning service at 10.45am.
Hall bingo: The next bingo session in the village hall annexe is on Wednesday from 7.30pm. Entry is free and tea and biscuits are served during the interval. Books are priced at 80p each and there are prizes for both a line and full house. There is also a flyer at the end of the evening with a cash prize on offer.
Swing Commanders: The popular band, The Swing Commanders, have been booked to appear from 7.30pm next Friday, October 30. This is their sixth consecutive year at Gargrave Village Hall and tickets are £10 per person from either Caroline on 01756 749235 or Sally on 01756 748098. There will also be a bar and hot beef sandwiches can be purchased during the interval.

GIGGLESWICK: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639:
Parish council: The council has accepted claim the ownership of the footbridge over Tems Beck, in front of 9 Tems Street, by Mrs Cowin. This concludes the council’s efforts to establish ownership. Some issues with regards to the Harrison Playing Fields were discussed. The council took notice of a letter from Settle United Junior Football Club, which said it could no longer hire the fields for its football training as numbers had gone down. The council is exploring other ideas to make better use of the fields. The council is also exploring the instalment of a community defibrillator in the village. The next meeting will be held on November 10 at 7.30pm in the parish room (next to the vicarage).
Christmas tickets: Tickets are now available for Giggleswick School’s ever-popular evening of Lessons and Carols for Christmas. Please note that these are limited to two per applicant as there is a high demand for tickets. On Friday, November 5, join Giggleswick pupils and staff at the Richard Whiteley Theatre as they pay tribute to the musical theatre through A Night at the Musicals. Primary School: Congratulations go to year five pupils who passed their Bikeability course, which involved a test on the Highway Code and two days of working with cycle instructors and learning to control and ride their bikes safely. Hosted by Giggleswick School, year six pupils joined with pupils from Giggleswick Junior School, Austwick and Kirkby Malham Primary Schools to take part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) day run by the Smallpeice Trust. They worked in two groups to design and make a wind turbine which generated electricity and these were then judged according to their effectiveness! Meanwhile pupils in reception and year one took part in a multi-skills festival - their very first cluster schools event.
St Alkelda’s: On Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, there will be a Christmas craft sale in aid of the NSPCC in St Alkelda’s Church. Refreshments will be available all day. Meanwhile the church is also appealing for new members in all parts of its choir. There is choral evensong once a month and 11am services on Sunday in addition to one hour’s practice on Tuesday. Movie treat: The next movie showing in The Octagon, Grassington, will be The Nut Job. It will be screened next Saturday, October 31, at 4pm. Coffee morning: The annual Yorkshire Air Ambulance coffee morning, organised by Julia Armstrong, of Threshfield, will be held in Church House on Saturday from 9.15am to noon. There will be a raffle, tombola stand and cake stall. Donations of gifts, cakes or homemade preserves can be delivered to Julia in Caxton Garth or delivered on the day to Church House.
WAGS meeting: Andrew Wilson, new chairman of the trustees at Grassington’s Devonshire Institute, was guest speaker at the recent WAGS meeting. He gave the history of the town hall and outlined its fundraising plans for the forthcoming year. He said there were already new zumba and ballroom dancing classes and he was keen to gather ideas for future initiatives.
Friendship Club: Sylvia Wheatley will reveal the secrets of handwriting at today’s meeting of Grassington Friendship Club. Next week, October 29, Kate Beard will describe her role with Grassington Festival. The club meets in Church House at 2.15pm.
Ladykillers:Grassington Players’ will perform The Ladykillers in the town hall tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at 7.30pm. Advanced tickets from the Hub cost £7 while admission on the door is £8.

INGLETON: Sue Brown, 015242 41835:
Women’s Institute: Ingleborough WI held an open evening. President Sue Brown welcomed members and guests, including three men. They all enjoyed a wonderful show of slides by Gordon Sharp and his wife from Bolton-by-Bowland. First were slides of the North East Riding of Yorkshire, showing villages and animals and birds too. Then peregrine falcons and their young that were photographed around Wharton Crag and Leighton Moss. The final slides were of a holiday in Peru, showing magnificent buildings and national costumes. A letter of thanks was received from the isavealife group for the £200 proceeds from the WI centenary afternoon teas. Members agreed to donate all of the money made from the jumble sale, to be held in the spring, to the refugee crisis. The presentation lunch will take place on January 28. The Ingleborough Group WI will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday, November 3, at 2pm in Clapham Village Hall. The speaker for the November meeting will be Phillipa Troutman on Dementia and Art Therapy. The group carol service will be at Burton-in-Lonsdale Church on Sunday, December 6, at 2pm.

Refugee concert: A concert to raise funds for Syrian refugees will be held at the village institute on Saturday, November 14. Settle Sings for Syria will be a free concert of local music, with a retiring collection for the refugees. Bring your own refreshments.
Community garden: Plans are being drawn up to design a logo, or emblem, for the community garden. This may be in the form of a competition. Details to follow.
Church news: On Sunday, St John’s will hold a said Holy Communion at 9am. There is a shoebox on the font and parishioners are asked to fill it with items for Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse, which distributes the boxes to children all over the world.
Village Show: The final meeting for the Langcliffe Show 2015 was held on Sunday. It was decided that the profit raised should provide £300 for the church and the institute and £50 for the Christmas switch-on event. Categories where notice is needed (such as story writing, poetry and photography) will be published as early as possible in this column.

Tea party: Susan and Warwick Brookes hosted an afternoon tea party in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance raising more than £400. A big thank you goes to them, all those who contributed to the raffle prizes and those who came along in support.
Lothersdale
Over 60s: The Retardandos, a group of 12 male singers, made a welcome return to entertain the Lothersdale Over 60s. The entertainment consisted of choral and solo singing, poetry and violin solo. The entertainers joined members for afternoon tea. The next meeting is on Wednesday when Brian Clough will give a talk, A walk on the wild side.

SETTLE: Gill O’Donnell, 01729 825639:
Refugee crisis: As a result of local generosity, the collection point at Victoria Hall has been overwhelmed with items for this appeal. The organisers, therefore, request that no further items are delivered to Victoria Hall for the time being to allow current stock to be moved. Collection will recommence at the end of October when goods, labelled and wrapped where appropriate, can be left in the foyer of Victoria Hall whenever it is open. If there is no-one on duty in the box office items can be placed behind the table curtain in the foyer. Goods required include tents, blankets, sleeping bags, duvets, baby food (tinned and in jars) and tinned foods (no meats) especially beans, lentils, tuna and pulses.
Operatic news: Settle Amateur Operatic Society would like to thank Settle Co-op for its help with the recent hamper raffle, drawn on October 10. The event raised £223 and the winners were Chris Wood, of Giggleswick, and Sophie, a visitor to Settle. Tickets are on sale for Thoroughly Modern Millie, which will be staged at Victoria Hall from Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. Kwezana link: Pupils at the two schools have recently been swapping news about new staff. The new teachers at Kwezana are Mrs Lukhanda who is a grade R teacher and Miss Nontombi Siyanga who is a computer teacher. Miss Siyanga works across the school encouraging all pupils with computer skills to maintain the link with Settle Primary. Meanwhile Settle Primary is preparing for the the upcoming visit of one of the teachers from Kwezana, Zukie Buwa, who teaches Xhosa, social science and life orientation. She will be in Settle from November 6 to 16, spending a week in school working with pupils and staff.
Theatre trip: There will be a theatre trip to see the musical Hairspray at the Alhambra, Bradford, on Wednesday, November 11 at 2.30pm. The cost is £38, which includes seat, coach and gratuities. One World Week: There has been a change of venue for the One World Week event tonight. This meeting will now take place at Settle Parish Church and will commence at 6pm with a simple meal followed by a talk, Relations with Muslims, by Dr Philip Lewis, an advisor on Christian/Muslim relations. Ferret racing: There will be an evening of ferret racing and a ferret show at North Ribblesdale Rugby Club tomorrow at 7.30pm. Entry is £1 per person and £2 per ferret with all profits going to the Lynch Syndrome charity.
Give and take: Settle Eco Group have arranged a give and take day at Victoria Hall on Saturday from 9.30am to 3pm. This is a free event where people are invited to bring items in good condition that they have no further use for and take away something else they would like. There is a table for photographs of larger items. The organisers cannot take clothes or shoes and ask that traders do not come until 2pm.
Recital: On Sunday at 3pm, there will be a recital by Max Heaton, percussionist with The National Youth Orchestra and the Hallé Youth Orchestra, in aid of Child Rescue Nepal, at the Quaker Meeting House, Kirkgate, Settle. Ticket cost £10 including interval refreshments, from Cave & Crag, Settle or 01729 825109. Max will play a varied programme on a range of percussion instruments.
The Folly: The Folly will again be hosting The Big Draw, as part of the national annual drawing event. This is a family event suitable for all ages, however children must be accompanied. The event will run on Sunday from 12.30pm to 4.30pm. A 50p donation is requested to cover the cost of materials.
Folk club: The Three Peaks Folk Club will be celebrating Trafalgar Weekend in style with a weekend of music and convivial company, not to mention a few drinks! The celebrations begin with The Admiral’s Dinner at 7pm tomorrow and this will be followed by an open session/singaround until midnight. On Saturday, there will be a singaround session and workshops from 3pm followed by a concert at 8pm featuring Geoff Higginbottom. There will also be support acts and floor singers. This evening session has an admission fee of £6, however all other sessions are free. All sessions will take place at Settle Social Club. Following breakfast at the Singing Kettle on Sunday at 10.30am, there will be an excursion to the Hoffman Kiln for an informal singalong.
Children’s centre: There will be a launch event for the new children’s centre on Tuesday. The centre is situated in the building which was formerly Settle Middle School. The event will take place between 10.30am and 12.30pm and will provide an opportunity to find out more about the work of the children’s centre.
Gardening Club: Settle and District Gardening Club will meet at Townhead Court on Wednesday at 2pm. The speaker will be Terry Frazier on the subject of Gardens Through The Ages. Non members are welcome.
Coffee morning: There will be a coffee morning at St John’s Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 3, from 10am to noon. The money raised will support the work of the Methodist Church in Sierra Leone with victims of Ebola and also those in need in Nepal following the earthquake.
Christmas market: A Christmas market organised by Jack’s Journey in aid of Brain Tumour research will be held at St John’s Hall on Saturday, November 7. The event will host a number of stalls including local companies, Sew to Soul, Sugar Rush butter fudge, Piccalilly children’s wear, Pigtails children’s wear, Lay of the Land and Ben’s Woodwork. There will also be a raffle and a cake stall.
Charity dance: The next charity dance will take place at St John’s Church Hall on Saturday, November 7 from 8pm to 11pm. If possible please contact 01729 823259 or 824038 by Friday, November 6, to confirm attendance. All proceeds will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Justice talk: Churches Together in Settle and District Justice and Peace Group will host a talk by Andrew Sayer on November 11 at Friends Meeting House. Entitled “Why we can’t afford the rich”, it promises to be a thought-provoking evening. Professor Sayer is a professor of social theory and political economy at Lancaster University. The meeting will commence at 7pm with tea and biscuits.
200 Club: The October draw of the Friends of Settle Swimming Pool 200 Club took place at Skipton Building Society and was drawn by Sarah Grice. The winners were: No 140, Vikki Parsons, £50; No 13, O Price, £30; and No 29, H Firth, £20.

School workshops: Pupils from Hothfield School took part in two day-long workshop sessions on the theme of cyber-bullying. The workshops, held at the town hall over successive Wednesdays, were led by the Konflux Theatre Company and after discussions and rehearsals the children concluded by performing a play called Click Safe, with parents invited to make up the audience. The two days were made possible by help from Bradford Council and the Friends of Silsden Town Hall.
Plaques probe: Silsden Town Council are looking into the possibility of providing blue heritage plaques at some of the town’s more historic buildings. A small sub-committee of councillors has been set up to investigate cost and locations. The idea was suggested by the deputy Mayor, Cllr Keith Savage.
Band celebration: Silsden Local History Group and Silsden Town Band are presenting their joint event, devoted to two centenaries of band music in the town, on Monday at the Methodist Church. Doors open at 7pm for refreshments and a 7.30pm start. Admission is £2. The evening is being sponsored by the Co-operative Funeral Service. The following afternoon, the History Group will hold its monthly research and advice drop-in session at the Town Hall from 2pm to 4pm.
Stars Party: Silsden All Stars are hosting a Halloween party at Sunnybank Social Club next Saturday, October 31, from 4pm to 6.30pm. Enjoy a devilish disco; wear freaky fancy dress; eat horrible hot dogs and play ghoulish games. Entry is £1.50 per person or £5 for a family. Pay on the door.

Thriller tribute: Silsden AFC present Michael Jackson’s Halloween Thriller tribute at the sports club. It is strictly for over 18s and tickets cost £10.

SKIPTON:
Naturalists: At Craven Naturalists’ and Scientific Association’s first meeting of the new session, Howard Driver gave an excellent talk on the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association. He covered the history from a small hut (an old railway carriage) used as headquarters to the present purpose-built one (still known as the hut). He explained how they co-operated with other teams and described the various rescue methods on the fell and in caves. All team members are volunteers but costs are incurred with buying, running and maintaining vehicles such as Land Rovers and the special communications van. In addition its headquarters needs updating to provide better training facilities. These costs are covered by public donations and the only Government help is in allowing some VAT to be reclaimed. The next meeting on Monday will see Tom Lord speaking on the History of Woodland in the Yorkshire Dales. It will be held in the Swadford Centre at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome.
Speakers Club: Craven Speakers Club’s last meeting took as its theme Autumn and the Seasons, which allowed members to deliver seasonal poems and readings. This was followed by a varied topics session. Chris Birch delivered the winning mini speech with an imaginative look at his favourite season, spring. The next meeting will be held on Monday at 7.45pm at the Soroptimists Rooms in Otley Street.
Friendship Group: Some members of Skipton Friendship Group took advantage of a tour of the World Heritage Site of Saltaire, when for over 90 minutes the village was brought to life for them by costumed guides, as they walked around the streets, learning about its history and how it grew to be such a major manufacturing centre. Following this, most of them repaired to one of the many tea shops in the village. On Tuesday, Geoff Donaldson will talk about The Magic of Music. For more information, ring 07904 685805.
Holy Trinity: The church will hold an 8am Holy Communion, with the rector, the Rev Veronica James, and a parish communion at 9.45am. On Sunday afternoon, the Area Bishop of Ripon, the Rt Revd James Bell, will the lead a confirmation service at 3pm. As well as candidates, their families and friends, everyone is welcome to attend. There is no evening service this week. Morning Prayer is said at 9am on weekday mornings, with mid-week Holy Communion at 10.45am on Wednesday.
Retired Men’s Forum: Littondale and Beyond was the subject of David Alred’s illustrated talk to Skipton Retired Men’s Forum. He explored some of the more remote areas of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, including Halton Gill, Foxup, Yockenthwaite and Hubberholme. Next week, John Holroyd will speak about Iceland in 2001.
Dalesway WI: Skipton Dalesway WI enjoyed their own Bake-Off earlier this month when Mike Armstrong gave a demonstration of different types of bread, Parkin pigs, sausage plait, soda bread and toffee apple muffins, using fresh yeast in most recipes. Once cooked, members and several visitors delighted in sampling all the delicious bakes with coffee and tea. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 4, at 7.30pm, at Three Links, when Jill Perrings from Catkins of Settle will demonstrate flowers in the home for Christmas.

Special services: Two special services are to be held at St Oswald’s Church. The first, In Loving Memory, will take place next Sunday, November 1, at 9.30am, and will remember loved ones. The second service is the Remembrance Sunday Service on November 8 at 9.30am, when the nation remembers and honours those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

Women’s Institute: This year the WI has celebrated it centenary. To celebrate this event, Threshfield and Linton held a garden party at the home of one of its members. The ladies enjoyed an afternoon tea made by the committee with a centenary cake. Members have also enjoyed many of the regional and national celebrations, including visiting Ripon Races for Ladies Day and a garden party at Buckingham Palace. Threshfield and Linton WI have also been busy fundraising to provide a new bench on Linton Village Green, which was officially “sat on” last week by the members. The October meeting was held in Threshfield Village Institute where the speaker was Andy Swinscoe from The Courtyard at Settle. He brought various cheeses to enjoy and the competition was A Recipe for a Cheese Biscuit. The next meeting will be held in Threshfield Village Institute on Wednesday, November 11, at 7.30pm when the speaker will be former MP Ann Cryer. Mrs Cryer has attracted media attention for speaking out against forced marriages, honour killings and calling on immigrants to learn to speak English before entering the country. Guests are welcome. Christmas party: The Cracoe and Rylstone Sports Committee will stage its annual Christmas party for local primary school pupils in the village hall on Sunday, December 20, from 3pm to 5pm. Children under eight must be accompanied. Personal invitations will be sent out shortly.

WIGGLESWORTH:
Community Centre: Bacon Butty mornings are going strong each Saturday from 11am to 1pm. A quilting session is being held on Sunday from 10am. The craft group will meet on Monday at 7.30pm when the kits for covering the church kneelers will be available. A whist and dominoes session will be held at the hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm and a light supper provided. The Village Show day is fast approaching. It is next Saturday, October 31. Entries can be given to Angela or Anne. The day after the show there will be a big clean up and everyone is welcome.
