Halloween success: This year’s Halloween events at the Game Cock Inn - held to celebrate the anniversary of Eric and Maree Coupey taking over the pub - have been hailed a success. The children spooked the village, going from door to door trick or treating. On their return, hot dogs and pies and peas were served followed by a charity auction. Then everyone danced the night away to the live band The Revolverlites. So far £1,354 has been raised for the primary school.
Church news: The next parish walk led by Canon Ian Greenhalgh will be next Saturday, November 21, meeting at Austwick Church at 9.30am for a circular walk to Knight Stainforth, about six miles in total. On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion at Austwick at 9.30am, and Evensong at Keasden at 2pm. Holy Communion is held in Austwick Church every Wednesday at 10.30am
Afternoon Fellowship: The Afternoon Church Fellowship will meet in the parish hall on Wednesday, November 25, at 1.30pm. Alec Rigby will give a slide talk on Pedalling and Paddling around the Outer Hebrides.

BARNOLDSWICK:
St Andrew’s: The preacher at Sunday’s 10.30am service will be Mrs S Godfrey. Mrs P George will lead the 6.30pm service. On Saturday, there is a coffee morning from 10ams. Women’s Institute: The next meeting of Bradley Women’s Institute is at 7pm on Monday in the village hall. New members are welcome.
Bradley Show: Thanks go to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s Bradley Show. A total of £1,626.59 was raised, which is double last year’s profit. So far, the committee have decided to make donations to the parish council for tree planting on the playing fields, the Women’s Institute for hall rental costs, the Brownies and Guides for a gazebo, the school for netball hoops, and for the village Christmas tree. There are plans to extend Bradley Show next year, including starting earlier in the day and having country attractions and demonstrations.
Christmas Fair: There will be a Christmas Fair in the village hall on Saturday, November 28, from 10am to 12.30pm. There will be Christmas wreaths for sale and to order, along with gifts, decorations and crafts. Anyone wishing to book a stall should contact Susan Dobson on 01535 633363 or 07823 347561. Proceeds will be donated to The Springfield Project and Bradley school’s charity KASIN.
School news: Linton class enjoyed a visit to York, including The Dig and the Jorvik Viking Centre, while Grassington class visited the Imperial War Museum in Manchester. The school is collecting tokens from promotional 500g tubs of Flora Original, Light and Buttery. For every 50 tokens, the school will receive a Samsung Galaxy tablet.

Coffee morning: The coffee morning held last Saturday morning at the Shieling, Burnsall, was a fantastic success. Sam and all his family were overwhelmed with the support and the donations received and wish to express their gratitude. The total raised so far for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance exceeds £1,400.
Pictorial history: A full Burnsall Village Hall was entertained and educated by Alan Stockdale last Friday. Burnsall Village Green chairman Jonathan Gibson would like to thank everyone who came to the local history slide show. The event raised more than £300 for village green funds.

Bonfire night: Steve and Peter pulled yet another spectacular show from the bag with their 2015 village bonfire. Despite a wet start, they got the fire going and treated the community to a truly splendid display - which lit up the sky for miles around. Funds raised will go towards the recreation ground project.
Crafts and gifts: A Christmas craft and gift fair will be held on Saturday from 10am to 4pm in Carleton Village Hall. Entry is free. Stalls will include cards and calendars, ladies gifts, children’s books, and handmade items including wood ware, chocolates, preserves and jewellery. St Mary’s Church: On Sunday, there will be a Bread, Wine and Worship service at 11am. This is a shorter family communion. The Knitted Bible exhibition continues at St Mary’s until Saturday and is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be on sale at the Coffee Pot.

Parish Council: A working party of councillors and volunteers has been tidying up the car park on Main Street. Vegetation has been cut back and Craven District Council has been notified of necessary repairs required to the fencing. An abandoned car has been removed and two unlicensed vehicles with no MOT have been identified. CDC has also been asked to impose its byelaws more rigorously.
Embsay churches: On Sunday, St Mary’s will hold a family communion service at 9.30am while at the Methodist Chapel at 10.30am the morning service, with sacrament, will be led by the Rev M.Greenwood. On Tuesday St Mary’s will hold a communion service at 10.30am and the church will be open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation between 2pm and 4pm. Smiley Faces will meet on Friday at 1.45pm. The Methodist Chapel’s Friendship Club is still temporarily suspended due to ill health.
Embsay Players: Tickets are selling quickly for this year’s pantomime Cinderella. It runs from Wednesday, November 25, to Saturday, November 28. All evening performances start at 7.15pm and there is a Saturday matinee at 2.15pm. Tickets are available at the Paper Shop on Shires Lane.
Litter pick: Unfortunately the heavy downpour of rain on Saturday caused the autumn litter pick-up morning to be postponed. Volunteers will be advised when a new date has been set.
Community Library: On Wednesday, the library will hold the third of six Story and Singing Sessions for children under five and the carers. Run by retired nursery school head Claire Toberman, the session will take place between 2pm and 3pm and are free.
Pre-school Playgroup: Raffle tickets for the playgroup’s grand raffle are on sale at 50p. The tickets are available from the pre-school, the Village Shop, the Hair Shop and at Embsay Players’ pantomime. The draw will take place during the interval of the pantomime, Cinderella, on November 28.
Gardening Club: The November meeting takes place in the village hall tomorrow at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Nigel Heaton, the plant centre manager at RHS Harlow Carr, who will speak about winter plants for the garden and indoors.
Film Night: Wednesday sees the screening of What We Did On Our Holiday at 7.30pm in the village hall. The film, a comedy drama, tells the story of how three generations of a family are gathered together for a holiday by the seaside in Scotland. Admission is £4.

Coffee morning:A coffee morning will take place in the village hall between 10am and noon on Saturday. All proceeds will be donated towards the production of the 2016 pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Flea market: The next flea market will take place on Sunday between 10am and 4pm in the village hall. Entry is 50p and refreshments will be available. There will be numerous stalls displaying bric-a-brac, antiques, crafts and home-made produce. Michelle, Pat and Derek, who have brought their garden stall to Gargrave for the past 25 years, have stood down and the organisers wish them all the best for the future. A replacement plNR stall has been found and will be outside the village hall at all the flea markets throughout the year.
St Andrew’s: On Sunday, St Andrew’s will hold a BCP Holy Communion at 8am and a Sung Eucharist at 10.45am.
Hall refurbishment: The main room at Gargrave Village Hall will be closed for redecoration from noon on Monday. Classes and events held in the annexe will not be affected. The hall will reopen again on Monday, November 23.

Primary school:The school hosted a visit from Bishop James Bell, accompanied by the Rev Hilary Young. They met most pupils and staff and enjoyed finding out about some of the activities taking place. They also joined in with class two’s French lesson! Thanks to all families for their contributions towards the Starlight clothing collection and their support with the harvest festival. A total of £100 was raised for the pupils’ chosen charity – Save the Children. The harvest display was divided into 33 parcels, which were then distributed by year six pupils to some of the elderly in the village. Congratulations go to seven pupils who took part in the Craven Schools Cross Country Final representing North Craven. They were: Jack Sanderson (10th), Ned Whitaker (2nd), Connie Eccleston (4th), Oliver Sampson (12th), Jimmy Howarth (4th), Phoebe Holliday-Gill (8th) and Edie Eccleston (10th). Pupils also participated in the cluster KS2 Football Tournament and the year five/six team was placed third overall. Finally congratulations go to Bailey Pears, Presley Pears, Phoebe Oliver, Samuel Leach and Lottie Oliver for participating in a recent church community event.
Theatre events: Giggleswick School students will stage Guys and Dolls at the Richard Whiteley Theatre from November 26 to 28. Performances start at 7.30pm. Jumble sale: The Ingleton and Thornton Old People’s Welfare committee and friends made the magnificent total of £907.53 at their autumn jumble sale. Some of this money will pay for the Christmas party on Friday, December 11.

Parish council: Police Inspector Hagan who attended the November meeting of Ingleton Parish Council responded to a question regarding parking and he confirmed that any cases of obstruction should be reported and the police would then act to remove the obstruction. Members of Ingleton in Bloom were thanked by Coun Lis for their work in the village. The maintenance contract for Central Gardens is to be reviewed with input from Ingleton in Bloom. Cllr McGonnigal suggested that donation boxes should be installed at the park toilets and this was agreed. It was reported that the boundary wall of the community centre, near the steps, needed attention and it was suggested that the clerk contact Highways in the first instance. Faulty street lights were reported outside 62 New Village, at the top of the Rake and Main Street and outside Curlew Crafts. There was also a light on Burnmoor Crescent that was flashing on and off. Cllr Lis assured members that the street sign on Laundry Lane that had been erected on the wrong side of the street would be corrected by the contractors.
St Mary’s Church: Reader Carol Lupton welcomed a large congregation including Explorers, Scouts, Cube, Beavers, their leaders, parents and grandparents to the Remembrance Service at St Mary’s Church. Colour standards were presented at the altar by Andrew Huck. Holly Wild carried the Explorers’ flag, Ethan Tagzyman the Scouts’, Hope Browne the Cubs’ and Luca Dodgson the Beavers’. Peter Hudson read the names of the fallen from the two World Wars. The congregation then moved out to the war memorial to be joined by the members of the Methodist Church and local people paying their respects. The Last Post and Reveille were played, followed by a two-minute silence. Wreathes were placed on the war memorial by Ashley Unsworth for the Scouts, George Towler for St Mary’s Church and others from local organisations. Everyone returned to church where the Rev Charles Ellis preached the sermon telling the young people that the wars were started by bullying which led to stronger nations trying to overrule others. Scout leader Carl Unsworth presented 28-year-old Tom Haigh with his Queen’s Scout award. Parishioners were sorry to hear that the Rev Charles Ellis and his wife Susan will be leaving on retirement at the end of November. A farewell party has been arranged at the community centre on Saturday, November 28.

KELBROOK:
St Mary’s Church: On Sunday, St Mary’s will hold a service of light and hope at 5.30pm. There will be no morning service.

LANGCLIFFE: Helen Jarvis, 01729 825303:
Singing for Syria: Local performers, including the Jukebox Junkies, will take part in a special concert at Langcliffe Institute on Saturday. Entitled Settle Sings for Syria, the event will feature local musicians of all genres and will raise funds for refugee charities. The event starts at 7pm and is free, but there will be a retiring collection. There will also be a raffle.
Coffee morning: The institute’s Christmas coffee morning will be on Saturday, December 5.
Church news: On Sunday, there will be a joint service of Holy Communion at Stainforth at 10.30am. Next Sunday, November 22, there will be a service of Said Holy Communion at Langcliffe at 9am. This is often called Stir Up Sunday because, traditionally, it is the day for making Christmas puddings. The Christmas whist drive is on Friday, November 27, at 7pm, in the institute. As usual there will be a hamper to be raffled at the institute Christmas coffee morning on December 5. This year, a cuddly hare will be looking for a name and a good home. The Christmas Carol Service is on Sunday, December 20, at 4pm.

LAWKLAND:
Young Farmers: Lawkland Young Farmers will hold their annual whist and dominoes on Tuesday at Austwick Parish Hall. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Everyone is welcome.

Help is needed with preparing and serving meals and providing transport to the event.
Christmas lights: The lights will be switched on in the town centre on Saturday, November 28. However, this family day is only possible through the hard work of the volunteers who organise the event. Equally if you are able to spare some time (and energy) in the week before the switch-on, the team would welcome volunteers to help with putting up the lights. Women’s Institute: On a lovely sunny autumn afternoon, Settle WI were reminded through quiz questions and various props, such as a Poinsettia, of the origins of Christmas customs. They learnt that tree worship and feasting at the Winter Solstice pre-dated many estimates and eight members were coerced into rendering several carols on handbells. It was applause all round for Stanley Walmsley and his Christmas Customs talk.
Refugee crisis: To help Syrian refugees, goods, labelled and wrapped where appropriate, can be left in the foyer of Victoria Hall whenever it is open. When there is no-one on duty in the box office items can be placed behind the table curtain in the foyer. Goods required include tents, blankets, sleeping bags, duvets, baby food (tinned and in jars) and tinned foods (no meats) especially beans, lentils, tuna and pulses.
Victoria Hall: Jez Lowe and Steve Tilston will bring their Writes and Songs tour to Settle on Sunday. They are two of the UK acoustic folk scene’s finest songwriters. Skerryvore will entertain with its unique blend of Scottish and Irish on Wednesday while Musica Lirica Opera will present Tosca, sung in English with orchestra, next Friday, November 20. In a change of date to Sunday, November 22 at 3.30pm, Settle Stories presents Dominic Kelly in The Hero Light. He will transfix the audience with energetic storytelling, rhythmic drumming, and the stories that have shaped Irish mythology for thousands of years. The month concludes with a visit on Thursday, November 26, by Roger McGough, one of Britain’s best-loved poets for both adults and children. The hall has recently launched a new initiative, with the opening of The Victoria Emporium every Saturday. Music night: Poppies Tea Room is holding its final music night on Saturday and will welcome Angus Barclay . Angus is a composer and guitarist based in West Yorkshire. He writes, performs and records both as a solo artist and in collaborations with other musicians, composers, singers, and artists. Tickets are £7 and are available from Poppies.
Ladies’ night: Limestone View invite you to join them for a ladies’ night and fashion show on Saturday between 6pm and 8pm. Proceeds will go to children’s charities. Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group’s next meeting is entitled Let’s Be Creative and will take place at Townhead Court at 7.30pm on Monday. Several members will talk about and demonstrate their approach to creative photography, either in camera or in Photoshop.
Amnesty letters: Amnesty International letter writing sessions are held on the third Wednesday of each month between 5.30pm and 8.30pm at Friends Meeting House. These are drop-in sessions and people are invited to come along for around half an hour and write letters. Information and advice will be available regarding content. Strollers: North Craven Strollers continue stretch their legs every Wednesday around Settle area, and every first and third Thursday around Gargrave and Hellifield. On the first walk of every month, there is a 30 minute stroll for those wanting a very gentle walk. As well as local walks The Strollers also travel further afield and on Wednesday will be heading to Austwick and Feizor. Church film: On Wednesday, the film, The Good Lie, will be shown at Settle Parish Church. In 1983, a brutal civil war broke out in Sudan leaving villages destroyed. Thousands of orphaned children began to flee, some walking thousands of miles enduring hardship and sacrifice. Thirteen years later, they were relocated to the US where they had to adjust to a vastly different culture. The Good Lie is inspired by their story. Doors open at 6.30pm and the film starts at 7pm. There is free entry and refreshments will be on sale. The event has been organised by The Sudan Group of The Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.
Chef evening: Settle Primary School PTA invite you to a pampered chef Christmas evening on Wednesday in the school hall. The event will start at 7pm and will feature cooking demonstrations and tastings of menu ideas for Christmas. There will also be the chance to purchase Christmas gifts and gadgets to assist with Christmas cooking. Tickets cost £5 and are available from the school office. All funds will go towards PTA funds to support school activities.
Settle Sessions: The final Settle Session of the year will be held next Friday, November 20, at 6.30pm and will start with a reception and brief AGM. This will be followed by an evening displaying a strong range of published and new poets. The evening’s entertainment will feature Chris Considine, a poet and former school-teacher who lived for many years in Swaledale before moving to Plymouth, and Ann Pilling is a distinguished writer of children’s fiction and a poet. Also on the bill will be four writers airing their work in the brief Read Two section. Tickets are available from Cave and Crag, The Courtyard Dairy and The Folly.
Settle Orchestra: Next Saturday, November 21, Settle Orchestra will hold an hour-long family friendly concert at Settle College starting at 7pm. The programme includes Humperdinck’s Overture to Hänsel und Gretel, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Williams’ Star Wars The Phantom Menace and Bizet’s Habañera and Toreador’s song from Carmen. The programme for this concert will include all of the above plus Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Op.46. Foreign film: The TRAMPS’ season of foreign films continues at Victoria Hall on Wednesday, November 25, with a showing of the multi-award winning French film Au Revoir Les Enfants. This will be shown with English subtitles. The screening starts at 7.45pm and admission is £5.
Craft day: Bookings are now being taken for an Age UK Christmas Craft Day, with cake and coffee, on December 2. The event will take place at The Folly between 1.30pm and 4pm and will involve an afternoon of seasonal crafts and card making. Race night: Tickets are now available for a race night at North Ribblesdale RUFC on December 4. This event is being held to raise funds for a public access defibrillator which will be based at the club but be positioned so that it can be used by all. Table top sale: The Friends of Silsden Town Hall will hold a table top sale at the venue on Sunday. All stalls have been taken up and there is waiting list of potential sellers. Doors will open to customers at 10am and home-made refreshments will be available.
Craft fair: A Christmas craft fair will take place on Saturday from 10am to 3pm in Silsden Town Hall. It has been organised by Been Busy and admission is free. A Crafternoon tea will be available, which includes three crafting experiences, a selection of sandwiches, cakes, tea and cream scones for £15. Please book this in advance.
Panto rehearsals: Rehearsals are now in full swing for Silsden’s first pantomime in many years. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the Christmas offering by Silsden Community Productions and will be performed over two evenings (December 4 and 5) at the town hall plus a matinee on the Saturday. History Group: A series of notelets, showing historic and current views of Silsden, have been produced by Silsden Local History Group and are being sold at £3.50 per pack. They are available at meetings or at the Christmas market being organised by the gala committee.
Health sessions: Two new sessions, promoting health and fitness, are being launched at Silsden Town Hall by Craven-based wellness trainer Anneli Howes. Both are suitable for all levels of fitness. An hour-long Fit Camp, costing £1, takes place at 9am each Tuesday and on Thursdays at 8pm, a Ballet Fit dance-inspired session will be held at a charge of £5. Autumn fair: A Mad Hatter’s autumn fair will take place at St James Church Hall on Saturday from 9.30am to 1.30pm. There will be prizes for the best hat on the day, children’s games, stalls, hot dogs and bacon butties.
Proms event: Proms on the Farm will hold a 40s and 50s evening on Friday, November 27 at Sunnybank Social Club. Tickets cost £6 from Twiggs or on the door subject to numbers. It will feature DJ Jeff Wallbank and singer Kitty Lamar. It will raise funds for Manorlands and Silsden Methodist Church.
Christmas market: The annual Christmas market will take place on Sunday, November 29. There will be stalls in the town hall and up Briggate including Santas Grotto. Refreshments will be on sale around the village and in the town hall.

SKIPTON:
Taster workshop: Skipton Embroiderers’ Guild will hold a taster workshop for adults and accompanied children under 16 on Saturday from 11am to 2pm in Christ Church Primary School (not Christ Church Hall as on previous occasions). The event will be part of the Christ Church School Fair. This is an informal workshop where children and adults can join together to make gift tags, cards and small handmade gifts for Christmas. Holy Trinity: There are two musical events on Saturday at Holy Trinity Church. In the morning, a visiting group will be ringing the bells, from 10.30am to 11.30am and, in the evening, the Pinsuti Chamber Choir will give a concert at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available at the door. Sunday services follow the usual pattern of Holy Communion at 8am, a parish communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 5pm. Morning prayer is said at 9am on weekdays and there is a mid-week Holy Communion at 10.45am on Wednesday. Toddle into Church for pre-school children and their parents or carers is held at 2pm on Tuesdays during term-time.
Camera Club: David Alred paid a return visit to the club last Tuesday when he gave a slide show of safaris taken to mainly Tanzania with a journey to Kenya. A host of animals and birds with some butterflies were shown close-up. Next week will see presentations by Mike Breeze and Tony Rostron.
Church concert: Airedale Male Voice Choir and the Cobbydale Singers will give a concert at Christ Church on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 at the door or from “Fleur Lingerie”, Newmarket Street. Proceeds will be split between Manorlands and Christ Church.
Retired Men’s Forum: Duncan Johnson spoke about the life of John Buchan, a prolific author best known for his novel The Thirty Nine Steps, who, as Lord Tweedsmuir, became Governor-General of Canada. Next week, Duncan will continue the story with an account of his many novels.

Harvest thanks: Kettlewell and Conistone churches thank everyone who helped with their harvest celebrations. Tin and packets were delivered to the Skipton Food Bank and fresh produce to the Salvation Army in Keighley. Proceeds from the harvest lunch and collection plates totalled £276.43, which will go towards helping the refugee crisis.
Local history: Retired Anglican priest the Rev Priestly Brook was guest speaker at Cracoe Local History Group. He provided reminiscences from the pulpit.
Piano for Pudsey: This year’s Piano for Pudsey concert will take place at Hetton Methodist Church tonight at 7pm. It is the eighth time that music pupils from Cracoe and the surrounding villages have joined together to raise money for Children in Need. Tickets are available from Joyce Milner on 730313.
Coffee morning: Cracoe Cricket Club will hold a coffee morning on Saturday from 10am to noon in Cracoe Village Hall. It will feature a cake stall, book stall and bacon sandwiches.
Women’s Institute: Rylstone and District WI will hold its 90th birthday celebrations next year and ideas for events were discussed at the recent meeting. A garden walk at Parcevall Hall was a popular suggestion.
