EMBSAY'S answer to Delia Smith has whipped up a feast of pasta and cake to reach the final of a cookery competition.

Twelve-year-old Jennifer Stearn, of Millholme Rise, has reached the final of the Guild of Food Writers' CookIt! competition.

The Aireville School pupil rolled up her sleeves to create a menu of smoky macaroni and apple cake with honey and calvados sauce.

She is one of six youngsters to reach the final of the competition, which is sponsored by The Flour and Grain Education Programme.

The finalists were selected from hopeful young cooks from around the UK. This year's theme was "007 - Licensed to Bake" and one of the dishes had to encourage traditional skills of pie, cake or biscuit making. The final "cook off" takes place in London on Thursday in the BBC Good Food Magazine test kitchen.

Judges include celebrity chef Marcus Wareing, cookery writer Sophie Grigson, executive chef of Caprice Holdings Mark Hix and BBC Good Food Magazine's food director Sara Buenfeld.

The first prize is a trip to Paris including a guided culinary tour with a French-speaking Guild of Food Writers member.
