A BARNOLDSWICK councillor has been appointed mayor of Pendle for the first time in almost 20 years.

And the election of Allan Buck will be marked on Sunday with a day of celebrations in the town. The highlight will be a town centre procession with a brass band.

In order to make the occasion a memorable spectacle for both residents and visitors, Coun Buck will be using a horse-drawn carriage.

He said: "It's 19 years since a Barnoldswick representative served as mayor and I'm keen to make it a day for the town to remember.

"I hope people will turn out to watch or take part in the procession. People are also welcome to join me at the service at Ghyll Church earlier in the day.

"I aim to be a mayor for all parts of Pendle and I'm inviting local organisations and families to let me know if they would like a colourful civic presence at any special events or celebrations.

"I want to involve as many local bodies as possible in mayoral activities."

On Sunday, Barnoldswick Brass Band will provide a musical arrival for the mayor when he attends morning service at Ghyll Church, at 11.30am.

At 1.15pm, the mayor and the mayoress, Barbara Mitchell, will lead a procession from the town's Civic Hall, on Station Road, accompanied by the brass band.

"I'm particularly looking forward to hearing the brass band's polished performance on Sunday," said Coun Buck.

"During meetings at the Civic Hall, I've heard many hours of rehearsals. I hope local residents enjoy their playing on Sunday as much as me."
