He said that if he found himself cornered in trouble he would simply exercise discipline and walk away. Jack was at the meeting with his father, John, himself a Rotarian, with whom he runs Earby Mixed Martial Arts.

St Leonard’s: The events committee held a good domino drive and raffle at the Station Inn. Twenty-eight people enjoyed the event and prizes were won by J Airey, R Beresford, T Lund, R Mitten, D Cornthwaite, A Atkinson and Kevin Jones. Isaac Middleton won the booby prize. Proceeds went to the church’s decoration fund. Other recent events have included a farewell afternoon tea for retiring vicar Charles Ellis, and his wife, Susan. Dorothy Baines played the organ for carol singing at the Hill Inn, which raised money for Save the Children.

Cononley Singers: The choir finished the year on a high note with audience members saying the near sell-out Christmas concerts in Christ Church, Skipton, and Cononley Village Institute were the best ever. Choirmaster Tony Hamilton was presented with gifts in appreciation of his dedication and hard work. Damian Oxborough, the accompanist, also received a present in recognition of his services. Rehearsals begin again on Wednesday, January 13.

COWLING:
St Andrew’s: The Christmas morning service will be at 10.30am and there will be a collection for Action for Children. And, on New Year’s Eve, there will be a social at 10pm with a Bring and Share Supper, followed by the Watchnight Service at 11.45pm.
Moonrakers: Local history group Moonrakers considered three main items at its December meeting. Firstly members sorted through new archives, including a copy of an assessment from the early 18th century. Inhabitants of Ickornshaw were being assessed to contribute to the upkeep of The Sandyforth Causeway, which went from Sandyforth Farm to Hill Ends. The second item was a first look for evidence of route ways over the moor, which involved projecting internet aerial images of the moor for all to see. The group would like to hear from anyone who has information about the causeway or packhorse routes in the parish. For the third item, members looked at pictures from recent visits, which will be added to its website.

CROSS HILLS:
St Peter’s: The church will hold a Christingle service today at 4pm. Tomorrow, Christmas Day, the congregation will join South Craven Baptist Church, Sutton, for their service at 10.30am and on Sunday they will join the service at St Andrew’s Church, Cowling, at 10.30am.

Embsay churches: Today sees St Mary’s holding a traditional blessing of the crib service at 4pm. This will be followed at 6pm by the singing of carols and seasonal songs around the elm tree from 6pm when there will be a collection for charity. At 11.30pm there will be a celebration of Midnight Mass. Christmas Day will see a family communion service at 9.30am. On Sunday there will be a communion service at 9.30am. The Methodist Chapel will see a Christmas Day service at 10am which will be led by the Rev Janet Clasper.
Parish council: Applications for Green Spaces designation as part of the Craven District Council Local Development plan have been submitted, proposing the areas reported last month, but with an extension of the suggested area at the eastern end of Shires Lane. It now includes the field containing Kempley Pond because of its importance as a habitat for a variety of wildlife. The parish council has been advised that the proposal to install speed tables in East Lane just above the entrance to the station will be subject to public consultation. The public notice will be published in the Craven Herald. Parish councillors have met the developer and his agent for the current Shires Lane proposal. Several matters are now being reviewed and the parish council is hopeful that matters will be resolved to mutual agreement.
Allotments: The local Allotment Association manages two sites in Embsay and Eastby. The gardening community is a mix of experienced and new gardeners and, as well as growing vegetables, fruit and flowers, they meet socially for a summer barbecue. Those wishing to apply for an allotment must be resident in Embsay or Eastby.

Parish council: Farnhill Parish Council is to ask North Yorkshire County Council to continue to oversee the grass cutting. The leader of Craven District Council, Cllr Richard Foster, will attend the parish council on January 5 to discuss its decision-making procedures. Treatment has now been carried out on the wasps nest at Lower Arbour. R Ellis is hoping to restart work to the seating area and the steps shortly. He is being asked to meet with the parish council to discuss the design and construction of the steps and possible alterations which could improve the path further up Lower Arbour. The clerk is to write to the contractor who did the building work at Craglands and remind him of his offer to contribute towards the cost of repairing the damage at Arbour Top. He is being asked for a contribution of £250. The Canal and Rivers Trust is working to fix Redmans Swing Bridge. The parish council has said the trust should make the repairs a priority. The draft budget was considered, with the parish council agreeing to lower the precept by five per cent for 2016/17. A letter has been received from the Yorkshire Local Councils Association regarding the recording of meetings. However, the parish council is not happy with the advice given and the clerk is to contact it again to ask for the necessary information and also to contact MP Julian Smith to see if he can offer any advice. Cllr R Bramley is to speak with the institute committee and ask why it has given up with the village calendar. Cllr M Scarffe provided a draft copy of a policy for the Arbour which will be considered at the next meeting in the Institute on Tuesday, January 5, at 7.30pm.

Parish council: Support for Settle Area Swimming Pool is continuing. The council has asked District Councillor Richard Welch to ask Craven Council how the decision was reached to discontinue funding to Settle Pool. Parish councillors are concerned that if the pool were to make changes it would be very difficult for many of the users to access alternative facilities. Cllr Welch will continue to offer as much help as he can. The council agreed to host a community defibrillator and cabinet at a place to be decided. Craven District Council has sent a form for the designation of Local Green Space and Giggleswick Parish Council agreed to include the Harrison Playing Fields and the Glebe Field. The next meeting will be held on January 12 at 7.30pm in the parish room.
Primary school:Pupils took part in an after-school Dodgeball course and to Tom Birkett-Bentley, who was awarded the trophy for his hard work, wonderful attitude and good leadership skills. Some key stage two pupils took part in the first-ever basketball tournament. The year five and six team played particularly well and won five of their six games. Mollie Howarth and Ned Whitaker were awarded Player of the Tournament trophies. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Richardson and Mrs Whitehouse for producing 80 Christmas meals. All pupils designed Christmas cards. Oliver Brummitt’s design was shortlisted in the card competition organised by MP Julian Smith and there were four winners in the competition organised by Skipton Building Society. The winners were: class two - Phoebe Oliver (first prize) and Mary-Jane Lambert (second); and class three – Hattie Black (second) and Freddie Parsons (third). As part of a mini-enterprise scheme, Ruby Lambert and Erin Hutt-Holgate sold Christmas cards they designed and made at home and raised £65 for Meningitis Research. Class three pupils entertained staff and residents at Anley Hall. Finally, congratulations go to everyone involved in the Christmas presentation. The collection raised £190 for the NSPCC and Candlelighters.
Giggleswick Chapel: On Christmas Eve there will be a celebration of midnight mass in the school chapel at 11.30pm.

Parish council: Parish councillors elected a new chairman, Cllr Martin Hanson, at their recent meeting. This followed the resignation of Cllr Sheila Flemming. She has put in many years of sterling service on behalf of the parish and has decided to retire although she will remain as a councillor for a little longer to assist the new chairman in his role. The council has two vacancies and potential candidates are invited to go along to a meeting, which are held on the second Monday of the month at the village hall. Only one planning application was received this month from Horton Quarry wishing to alter the hours for HGV transportation. There will be a special meeting on February 22 in the village hall regarding the increase of charity walks around the parish and the impact it has on the community. The next meeting will be at the village hall on Monday, January 11, starting at 7.30pm.

Women’s Institute: The annual meeting of Ingleborough WI was held last Monday. Plans were made for the presentation lunch at Bentham Golf Club on January 28. A letter of thanks was received from Susan Ellis for a flower arrangement presented to her as she was leaving the area. A plant arrangement has also been given to Dorothy Baines to thank her for her hard work with the WI choir and her hospitality and cups of tea. Mike Fitzsimmons has made a lovely new notice box, which is on the wall next to the Co-op, so a bottle of wine was sent to him in thanks. Sue Brown was re-elected president. Lynne Woodburn will continue as treasurer and Doreen Wells becomes secretary. The January meeting will see Jean Chilton speaking on Nepalese women and Nepal generally and the competition is a scarf.
Welfare party: The Ingleton and Thornton Old People’s Welfare committee entertained 130 over 70s and their friends to the Christmas party at the Ingleborough Community Centre. Evangelical Minister Jim Day said grace before the meal. The choir led the singing of well-loved carols accompanied by Dorothy Baines. Ian and Jane Gray from Hellifield, then entertained with country music. Bibby’s Coaches kindly took people home, with volunteer car drivers taking the less able bodied to their homes. Walter Tooby gave a vote of thanks. A jumble sale will be held on Saturday, May 28, to raise funds for the summer outing at the end of August.

Retired Men’s Forum: Dr Mike Green spoke about his time as a flying doctor in South Australia in the 1960s. He had about 6,000 patients, two thirds of whom were Aboriginals spread over an area of about 200,000 square miles and he was expected to conduct 13 clinics every fortnight. The forum has now closed for the Christmas holiday and will reconvene on Tuesday, January 5, when Geoff Queen, from Kettlewell, will speak about A Tour of Indo China.

Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church held two services last Sunday. In the morning the Junior Church did a nativity re-enactment with a real live baby. In the evening, the Rev Alan Raine led a carol service which was enjoyed by a large congregation. On Christmas Day, the 10.30am worship will be led by Deacon Maggie Patchett. There will be no service on Sunday; instead there will be a shared service at Eastburn Methodist Church led by the Rev Saidu Kanu.

Pudsey thanks: Joyce Milner has extended thanks to everyone who attended, donated, or performed at the Pudsey Bear concert last month. The children involved were aged from eight to 16 and they played a wide range of music to raise £630 for Children in Need.
Nativity venue: St Peter’s Church, Rylstone, is the venue for a Community Nativity service today from 4pm.

Community Centre: Last week, the Meet and Eat Group enjoyed a festive meal followed by party games to finish. The friendly quiz had a Christmas theme. The Christmas Party was well attended and finished with villagers carol singing down to the Plough. The Pocket Panto will perform Aladdin next Sunday, January 3, at 6pm.
