BARNOLDSWICK:
St Andrew’s: On Saturday there will be a family Messy Church with a new year theme, and on Sunday the 10.30am service will incorporate the annual covenant service and communion. Nepal help: A new year coffee morning takes place in Clapham Village Hall on Saturday from 10am to noon. Roz Walton and Sue Mann invite people to attend to help fundraising for a trip to Nepal to rebuild schools destroyed in the devastating earthquake. Childreach International in Nepal tries to keep children in school as the best way to prevent child trafficking. There will be home-made treats, cakes, gifts, books and a raffle.
PTA quiz: Clapham PTA will hold its annual quiz in the village hall on Friday, January 29, from 7.30pm. Quizmaster Stuart Marshall will be running the show. Tickets are £7.50 which includes a two-course meal. There will also be a bar and raffle. All funds raised will go towards buying resources for the school. Embsay churches: On Sunday, the 10.30am service at the Methodist Chapel will be led by Mrs S Platt while the 9.30am service at St Mary’s will take the form of Holy Communion and will be followed by coffee, tea, juice and biscuit. On Tuesday morning at St Mary’s, there will be a quiet communion service.
Community Library: The library reopens this afternoon after the Christmas/new year break. It will be open from from 3pm to 7pm. On Wednesday, the Story and Singing Sessions for under fives and their parents/carers resume between 2pm and 3pm. These are free and are run by retired nursery school head Claire Toberman.
Allotments: The local Allotment Association, which manages two sites in Embsay and Eastby, is inviting applications from potential tenants. The gardening community is a mix of experienced and new gardeners and newcomers benefit from the shared knowledge of the ‘old timers’. As well as growing vegetables, fruit and flowers, the allotment holders meet socially for a summer barbecue. Tenants must be resident in Embsay or Eastby.
Women’s Institute: The first WI meeting of 2016 will be on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the village hall. The guest speaker will be Monika Butler, who will give an illustrated talk on A Walk Through Old Embsay and Eastby. Visitors are welcome.
Parish council: The parish council will meet on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the village hall supper room. Parishioners will, as usual, have the opportunity to raise questions as a part of the standard agenda. Please also note that for 2016, all parish council meetings will, unless notified otherwise, take place on the second Wednesday of the month.
Ballroom dancing: Betty and Jack’s renowned ballroom dancing sessions begin again this evening between 5.30pm and 8.30pm in the village hall. Experienced dancers and complete novices are welcome.
Bingo night: Embsay Cricket Club’s Saturday night bingo sessions resume in the village hall on Saturday with eyes down at 7.30pm. A good night is guaranteed and all profits are ploughed back into the club.

Parish thanks: The Parishioners of the combined parishes of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Stainforth and Langcliffe would like to thank their vicar, the Rev Stephen Dawson. He has had a busy time over the festive period organising all the services but has still found time for his general day-to-day work in the parish which have included lots of home and hospital visits. Mr Dawson’s next service will take place on Plough Sunday – January 10 – at St Oswald’s Church at 9am.
Gun Club: Members of Horton Gun Club have enjoyed a trio of shoots. The first was held at High Birkwith Farm, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, by kind invitation of the Morphet family. R Bold was the marshal. R Carr was the winner of the competition, with S Bamber second and R Bold, third. Mr Bold was also the winner of the pool shoot. The second shoot was the Andrew Chapman Memorial Shoot which was held in Horton Quarry by permission of Hansons Aggregates. K Humphrey and R Bold were the marshals. A McLernon was the winner, second was R Carr and third was P Fox. The latest shoot was held at Cragg Hill Farm by invitation of Mr and Mrs P Sutcliffe and family. R Bold was the marshal. R.Carr was the winner of the main competition with 26 points and also the winner of the pool shoot, second was K Humphrey with 24 points and third was K Iball with 17 points. The next members’ shoot is at Coniston Shooting Ground on January 23 at 10am.

Guided walks: The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line have organised two guided walks on Saturday. The second walk is part of the Get Walking series and is suitable for families being an eight-mile moderate walk covering The Pennine Way in Malhamdale. This will start at Gargrave at 9.32am and will meet up with the no 75 service bus at Gargrave Square. The return journey will involve a service bus from Malham to Skipton. No reservation is necessary but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Victoria Hall: The box office is now reopened after the holiday season and tickets are available for the numerous events planned for early 2016. The first of these, The Pitmen Poets, will be staged next Sunday, January 17. The show features four of the North East’s leading champions of its musical heritage: former Lindisfarne singer and songwriter Billy Mitchell, renowned singer and instrumentalist Bob Fox, leading exponent of Tyneside song Benny Graham, and much-covered Durham songwriter Jez Lowe. Individually and collectively, they celebrate the triumphs, tragedy, humour and hard times of North-East England’s coal mining tradition in an evening of music, song and spoken word, illustrated by atmospheric archive photography. On Saturday January 23, Bill Adair returns to compère A Celebration of Burns. Theatre trips: There’s still time to plan a treat for 2016 with two theatre trips. The first is to the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, to see Billy Elliot, the Musical. The trip will be to the matinee performance on Thursday, May19, and the price is £66, which includes a stalls seat, coach from Settle and gratuities. The closing date for reservations is January 22 as both seats and coach need to be confirmed. Swimming sessions: Settle Swimming Club offers children’s swimming tuition on Mondays and Thursdays between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Sessions are led by a fully qualified ASA instructor. Defibrillator training: A defibrillator is being installed at Limestone View and a training session has been arranged for any members of the public interested in learning more about this vital piece of equipment. The session will be held at Limestone View on Wednesday and will cover the use of the machine and what it does, the correct way to use the machine and provide an opportunity to familiarise participants with the machine.
Iyengar yoga: Iyengar yoga sessions have now resumed. There are two sessions on a Monday at Friends Meeting House in Kirkgate. Film night: On Wednesday, at Victoria Hall, The Ribblesdale Area Moving Picture Show will present a film set in North Yorkshire. Addicted to Sheep is the story of a family’s quest to breed the perfect sheep and follows a year in the life of a tenant farmer. Ladies Circle: The speaker at the December meeting of Ladies Circle was Chris Bown from the Salvation Army in Keighley. SKIPTON:

Navy news: Skipton and District Royal Naval Association was represented at Holy Trinity Church for the civic service of Skipton mayor Cllr Gordon Bell, who is a member of the Duke of Wellington’s Association. Afterwards, light refreshments were served in the church under the tower, near the Battle Ensign of HMS Vesper.
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion at 8am followed by parish communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 5pm. On Tuesday the pre-school group, Toddle into Church, returns after its Christmas break at 2pm. All children, parents and carers welcome. The mid-week service of Holy Communion is on Wednesday at 10.45am.

Community Centre: The New Year festivities finished with a brilliant production of Aladdin performed by Pocket Panto on Sunday. The audience was delighted and it certainly lifted the spirits on a damp dark afternoon. The popular bacon buttie events start again on Saturday, from 11am to 1pm. Craven crafts welcome new and old to their classes, which resume at the hall tomorrow at 1pm. The Monday craft group meets 7.30pm and Geraldine’s Zumba starts next Thursday, January 14, at 7.30pm.
