BARNOLDSWICK:
St Andrew’s: From this Sunday, all services and meetings will be held in the baptist church in Manchester Road as St Andrew’s awaits its new build. On Sunday, the church’s first joint service at 10.30am will be led by the Revs Norman Cummin and David Edmondson. The 6pm service will be taken by the Rev Ruth Jackson and will include Holy Communion. From Monday to Saturday, January 23, St Andrew’s will be raising funds for the new build by manning the Frank Street shop from 9am to 4.30pm daily. Next weekend, January 23 and 24, is Leprosy weekend and there will be a coffee morning with stalls on the Saturday and a frugal lunch after the morning service on Sunday.
Probus club: Sixty members of West Craven Probus attended the club’s first meeting of the New Year. Malcolm Tranter presented a slideshow of a boat trip down the Danube from Vienna to Budapest. Starting with Vienna, Malcolm showed pictures of churches, both inside and out, statues and prominent buildings.

BOLTON ABBEY:
Priory Church: The services on Sunday are 8am Communion (said), 10.30am Sung Eucharist and 4.30pm Evening Prayer. On the first Sunday of the month there is a Liquid Family Service at 9.15am. This is a fun service for all the family. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am. All services are the Book of Common Prayer.

Film Club: The next showing at Film Club will be Shaun the Sheep (U) tonight. The film will be shown in the school hall at 6pm and everyone in the community is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be available to buy and there is a loop system.
Bradley Show: There will be a Bradley Show committee meeting at 7.30pm tonight in the village hall.
Yoga: Sue Hartley runs a yoga class in the village hall on Tuesdays from 7.15pm to 8.15pm and Ann Berry has a Friday session from 10am to 11.15am. Participants are asked to bring a yoga/exercise mat if possible.
Messy Church: There will be a Messy Church in Bradley Methodist Church school room on Sunday from 3pm to 5pm. The theme is Past, Present and Future. Everyone is welcome – the event is free for the whole family and will be followed by a tea of sandwiches and cake.
Women’s Institute: The next meeting of Bradley WI will be held at 7pm on Monday in the village hall when the president will lead a night of poetry extravaganza. Members are asked to bring a poem of their choice.
School news: Pupils enjoyed a visit from a visiting pantomime company, which performed Cinderella – with lots of audience participation. Linton class (Class 4) will be holding a bun sale at 3.30pm on Monday as a group of children have decided they would like to raise money for cancer research.
Fitness classes: Fitness classes are held in the village hall on a Wednesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for ladies and from 7.30pm to 8.30pm for men. For more information, send an email to liv@livlifefitness.co.uk.
Canal towpath: Work on the canal towpath continues – the three-mile stretch between Bradley and Skipton is being upgraded and will be more accessible for walkers and cyclists. The £450,000 project is the result of a joint working party between the Canal & River Trust and Craven District Council. Funding has come from the Department of Transport as part of the Cycle Ambition grant programme.

CARLETON:
St Mary’s: On Sunday, a service of Bread, Wine and Worship will take place at St Mary’s at 11am. This is a more informal service with a short family communion and worship songs. On Friday, January 22, the church will hold its New Year quiz for church funds at 7.30pm, to which all are welcome. Wine will be served at £2 a glass. There is a maximum of six per team.
Carleton Playgroup: Carleton Playgroup meets in the village hall every Friday during term-time from 9.30am to 11.30am. Stay and play for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers. The cost is £1 under six months, £2 over six months and 50p per additional child, which includes craft activity, snack and drink.
Coffee Pot: The Coffee Pot returns to St Mary’s tomorrow from 2pm to 4pm. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be available with complimentary biscuits. All are welcome. Thanks go to Christine and Pam for hosting the alternative Coffee Pot over the Christmas period, boosting St Mary’s funds by £110.
Monday Club: Medical Detection Dogs will be theme of Monday’s meeting in the village hall. Alice Halstead will attend with her dog, Holly, who is a medical alert dog. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and new members (ladies) are welcome.
Quiz night: A quiz night will be held at The Swan Inn on Wednesday at 8.30pm. Admission is £1 per person including supper. Cash prizes will be available.

Quiz night: Clapham School’s ever-popular quiz night will take place on Friday, January 29, in Clapham Village Hall. Stuart Marshall will be asking the questions and the quiz will start at 7.30pm, with a supper of either vegetable lasagne or meat and potato pie provided by Lucy Knowles of Holme Barn Foods. Tickets are £7.50 per person, which includes the supper and are available from the school office or the Village Shop. There will also be a bar and raffle, with all proceeds going towards buying resources for Clapham School.

CONISTON COLD:
St Peter’s: Holy Communion will be celebrated at St Peter’s Church on Sunday at 9.30am.
Young farmers: Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at the Richard Tottie Memorial Hall for a quiz night. They also made final arrangements for a coffee morning that was held on Saturday. Members represented Coniston Cold Young Farmers at Ripon Cathedral’s Plough Service, carrying part of a plough into church.

Annual meeting: Cononley Bowls Club will hold its annual general meeting in the sports club on Tuesday at 7pm. Everyone is welcome including people wishing to become new members.
Village Institute: The next village event is Musical Mayhem on Saturday, February 27. This is the day when anyone who fancies themselves as a performer, playing an instrument, singing, reciting or dancing, can come along and try it out in front of a sympathetic audience. The afternoon session is from 2pm to 5pm and the evening session is from 7pm to 11pm. Anyone can take part. It always ends with a communal jamming and singing session. Admission as performer or audience is free and there will be refreshments in the afternoon and a bar in the evening. St John’s: On Sunday, the 11am Morning Prayer at St John’s Church will be led by the Rev Alan Raine. The new Archdeacon of Bradford’s induction service is to take place in Ripon Cathedral at 3.30pm on Sunday. Last Monday’s Toddlers Praise had to be cancelled due to a malfunction in the church heating system and apologies go out to anyone who made the trip up to church.

St Peter’s: Wendy Fryer will lead the 10.30am service on Sunday. There will be a gentle exercise class at the church at 1.30pm on Monday, and then at 7pm the church will host its next games evening for all ages with refreshments. EMBSAY-WITH-EASTBY: Andrew Wilson, 01756 790197:
Embsay churches: Sunday’s morning service at the Methodist Chapel at 10.30am will be led by the Rev David Batchelor while the 9.30am service at St Mary’s will take the form of a Family Communion and will be followed by coffee, tea, juice and biscuits. On Tuesday morning at St Mary’s there will be a quiet communion service.
Smiley Faces: The toddler praise, Smiley Faces, has resumed at St Mary’s on Fridays between 1.45pm and 3.15pm. Aimed at pre-school children and their parents, grandparents and carers, there are lots of toys, craft activities, singing, a Bible story, juice, tea, coffee and above all, there will be time for a chat.
Charity collection: The annual Christmas Eve singing of carols around the decorated elm tree in Elm Tree Square was attended by more than 250 hardly souls, despite the deteriorating weather and threatening forecast. Apart from getting the village’s Christmas festivities off to a traditional start, £290 was raised for charity. Organised for the community by both the Anglican and Methodist Churches, it was decided to support the Airedale Hospital Charitable Fund.
Cricket bingo: The next Embsay Cricket Club’s bingo night will be on Saturday in the village hall. You don’t have to be a cricket fan to come along and enjoy a convivial evening. Eyes down is at 7.30pm and all profits will go towards the club.
Cinema Club: The pre-school’s next Family Cinema Club screening will be on Sunday in Embsay Village Hall. The doors will open at 2pm. Membership of the club is £3 per person which entitles the member to free entry and a goody bag. Refreshments will also be available on the day.
Film Night: The first screening of the New Year will be The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley and Charles Dance. The venue will be Embsay-with-Eastby Village Hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm. This film is the story of Alan Turing, the cryptanalyst who was instrumental in the breaking of the Enigma Code used by the Germans during the Second World War. It is a fascinating study of a man who should have been acclaimed for his pivotal achievement, but who after the war, was broken by the ‘establishment’. Admission at the door is £5 and includes tea and biscuits. Everyone is very welcome to attend. Please note that the admission charge has gone up this year. This is due to the rising cost of hiring both the hall and the film licence.
Drop-in surgery: PCSO Ruth Pearson’s next village hall drop-in surgery will be on Monday between 6pm and 7pm. From next month she will also resume surgeries on Samuel Taylor’s premises.
Wriggle and Giggle Club: The pre-school’s Wriggle and Giggle Club for babies and toddlers meets every Monday in term time between 2pm and 3pm in Embsay-with-Eastby Pre-school Playgroup’s rooms in the village hall. St Andrew’s Church: Just over £1,000 was raised from the collection at the Christmas services, which will be shared between St George’s Crypt, Leeds, the Church Mission Society and the Jigsaw Kids Ministries, Manila. And more than £200 was raised at the crib service for the Children’s Society. On Sunday, there will be services of Holy Communion at 8.15am (in the parish rooms) and at 10am in the church.
Coffee morning: Farnhill Methodists held a coffee morning on Saturday, which raised £80 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and £36 for the Gambia Schools Trust, an education charity.
Village Pump: The Village Pump – the over 50s group – will meet in the Kildwick and Farnhill Institute on Wednesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Soup lunch: Please make a date in your calendar and support the local branch of the NSPCC. A soup luncheon will take place in the village hall on Saturday, February 6, between 11.30am and 2pm. The entrance fee is £7.50 and this will include soup, cheese and biscuits, homemade cake and tea or coffee. There will also be a raffle and you can either pay on the door or obtain your ticket from Poppyfields Flower shop in Gargrave High Street or from any of the committee members.

Theatre season: The theatre season opens at the Richard Whiteley Theatre with a showing of the new James Bond movie, Spectre, by Community Cinemas on Sunday at 3.30pm. On Monday, the first Gigg Lecture of the season will take place with Leon McCarron talking on Karun. A Northern Irish adventurer, film-maker and writer, McCarron followed the Karun, which is the longest river in the Islamic Republic of Iran, from source to sea, hoping for some kind of insight into one of the most intriguing and misunderstood places in the world. He will share his discoveries, as well as the lessons he has learned from making adventure a way of life. On Monday, January 25, Worklight Theatre will present Labels – an award-winning show using autobiographical stories of mixed heritage and racism to examine our use of words and our own personal prejudices. Amid the cacophony of statistics and soundbites surrounding the immigration debate, this new solo show offers an honest, human story about multicultural Britain.

GISBURN:

Tea tasting: On Sunday, there will be a special tea tasting event, followed by afternoon tea, at the institute at 3pm. The afternoon tea with a difference, will feature six specially brewed teas with tasting notes, provided by Hannah Crabtree, all in aid of church funds. After the tasting, visitors get to choose their favourite brew, and are served a traditional afternoon tea, complete with sandwich, cake and scone. Coffee will also be available. INGLETON: Sue Brown, 015242 41835:
Parish council: Don Gamble, from the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, spoke about the Stories in Stone project at the January meeting of Ingleton Parish Council. It was agreed by members that this issue should be put on the agenda for the next meeting so that councillors could then contribute ideas for activities. A young resident inquired about the progress of the bike track and was told that there would be a meeting on Monday, January 25, at 7pm at the centre. Cllr Lis urged him and other potential users to attend in order to provide much-needed input. Cllr Lis confirmed that Craven District Council was considering the removal of the asbestos soffits from the toilets at no cost to the parish council. Councillors reported a number of blocked drains in the village which the clerk will report. Cllr Ward thanked everyone who helped clear up the considerable mess left after Christmas in the community centre car park. Cllr Metcalfe updated members on the Boundless broadband project at Chapel-le-Dale which he believed would come into effect in the next two to three months.
Coffee morning: On Saturday, the theatre group will hold a coffee morning at the centre from 10am to noon at which pantomime tickets will be on sale.

No reservation is necessary for these walks but all participants should ensure that they are appropriately clothed, carry a packed lunch where required and have suitable footwear. Victoria Hall: Please note that the Tuesday indoor market will reopen on February 2. The box office, however, is open as normal and tickets are available for the numerous events planned for early 2016. The first of these, The Pitmen Poets, will be staged on Sunday. The show features four of the North East’s leading champions of its musical heritage. Next Saturday, Bill Adair returns to compère A Celebration of Burns. Recipe party: Settle Amateur Operatic Society’s recipe party and quiz night, scheduled for Saturday, has had to be postponed. A new date will be arranged and advertised in the coming weeks.
Messy Church: The next Messy Church session will take place at St John’s Church Hall on Sunday between 3.30pm and 5.30pm and is open to all. There will be a chance for crafts, activities and celebration as well as a shared hot meal.

Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will meet at Townhead Court on Monday at 7.30pm. The theme for the evening will be Printing and will be led by Margaret Smit. There will be a discussion covering printing skills, with members encouraged to ask about their specific problems or aspirations. The gallery for the week is entitled This is Creative and follows on from member contributions on November 16. Visitors are welcome.
Amnesty International: There will be a further letter writing opportunity at Friends Meeting House on Wednesday between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. You are invited to come along and support Amnesty International by writing a letter which may help to save someone’s life. Christian Unity: There will be a week of events organised by Settle Churches Together to mark the week of prayer for Christian Unity. These will start on Sunday at 4.30pm with an informal service at St Alkelda’s, Giggleswick. On Tuesday, there will be a meeting for worship at Friends Meeting House between 12.15pm and 12.45pm and additionally there will be a simple meal at Settle Parish Church, served between 11.30am and 2pm with proceeds going to Christian Aid. On Thursday, there will be a songs of praise session at Limestone View at 6.30pm. On Sunday, January 24, there will be a unity service at St John’s Methodist Church at 3pm.
Theatre trips: A reminder that the closing date for booking for the trip to Billy Elliot: the Musical at the Alhambra, Bradford, is on Friday, January 22. The trip itself will be to the matinee performance on Thursday, May 19, and the price is £66, which includes stalls seat, coach from Settle and gratuities. A trip is also being arranged to see Matthew Bourne’s ballet Sleeping Beauty at the Alhambra, Bradford, on Wednesday, February 24. This will also be a matinee performance and the price is £40. Band concert: A concert by Giggleswick and Settle Brass Band will be held at Settle Parish Church on Sunday, January 24. This will commence at 7pm and there will be a raffle and refreshments available.
Folk club: Please note that this month the Three Peaks Folk Club will meet next Sunday evening, January 24, and not the usual Saturday. The gathering will be held at Settle Social Club and will be a guest night featuring duo Morfran Heights.
Gardening Club: Settle and District Gardening Club will hold its first meeting of the year at Townhead Court on Wednesday, January 27, at 2pm. The meeting will include a talk by Les Chandler called Wildlife in the Garden and is open to visitors at an admission charge of £3.
Swimming sessions: Settle Swimming Club offers children’s swimming tuition on Mondays and Thursday between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Sessions are led by a fully-qualified ASA instructor. There is an extended session from 6.30pm to 8pm also available on Thursdays. Women’s Institute: Business concluded with the annual draw, in memory of Doris Robinson, for a member to attend Denman College. The winner was Jean Stevens. The speaker, Bob Pickersgill, talked of the background of George Gershwin and went on to remind members of all-time favourites such as Summertime, encouraging members to sing along and to listen to the melodies played on his saxophone. Everyone was dismayed to hear that Gershwin died aged only 38. A craft day is planned in April and anyone interested would be welcome to attend. Details will be issued later.

Camera Club: Silsden Camera Club met last Wednesday for the first meeting of 2016, which was held in St James’ Church Hall. The competition was entitled Mechanical Abstract in Black and White and the results were: 1 B Clough, 2 J Grimshaw, 3 N Newsome. SKIPTON:
Camera Club: Skipton Camera Club met again after the Christmas break with a split evening. Russell Threadgold showed pictures of the Mediterranean resorts on a cruise which visited some very attractive and colourful destinations while, in complete contrast, Jenny Doyle showed the front elevations of shops in the High Street, the variations in architecture and how changes had been made in the shops now occupying those premises.
Christ Church: On Sunday, there will be a service of Holy Communion in Christ Church at 8am, followed by Family Eucharist at 9.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. The week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on Monday with services in several churches in Skipton. Toddler Praise will take place in Christ Church on Wednesday at 10.30am, to which accompanied young children are invited for an informal time in church, followed by refreshments in the hall. All are welcome to attend these services. There will be a coffee morning and box opening for The Children’s Society in Christ Church Hall on Saturday, January 23, at 10am.
Speakers Club: Craven Speakers Club held its first meeting of 2016, which started with a well-constructed speech by Jan Paulke titled Dealing with Failure. This was followed by Chris Birch who provided an educational look at how to prepare for and deliver a mini speech when presented with a topic with no time to prepare. Val Ward finished with a unique topics session whereby invitees were asked to describe a mystery gift by looking at a clue and then to thank the person giving the gift once they had opened it. The next meeting will be held on Monday from 7.45pm at the Soroptimists Rooms in Otley Street. Visitors are welcome.
Retired Men’s Forum: Geoff Queen gave an illustrated talk about a tour of Indo-China, which included Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. These countries were now, fortunately, at peace having recently suffered from the Americans in Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Mr Queen visited many of the sites where hostilities had taken place. Next week, Graham Alcock will speak about Seeing Colours.
Navy news: At the first meeting of 2016, Skipton and District Royal Naval Association were treated to pheasant paté and biscuits by a fellow shipmate. The meeting opened with Lord Nelson’s Prayer on the eve of Trafalgar and was followed by a Loyal Toast to the Queen. Christmas hampers had been delivered to former shipmates now too infirm to attend meetings. During the festive season, the branch had been represented at the induction of the new vicar of Christ Church and at the civic service at Holy Trinity Church. The £10 subs for 2016 are now due and can be paid to the treasurer at the next meeting.
Esperanto group: Skipton Esperanto Group will begin the new year with the annual review of messages and good wishes received over the holiday period. The language is used around the world, and greetings have reached the Skipton group from friends in various countries, including Argentina, France, Germany, Russia and Japan. Also on the agenda will be a look forward to the many meetings, conferences, courses and holidays available in 2016, to enable the Esperanto speakers to meet and get to know each other. The next meeting of the Skipton group is on Monday at 7.30pm. Visitors will be welcome to sample the language and hear about the particular international culture of Esperanto speakers. Gardeners’ Club: Skipton Gardeners’ Club will resume their meetings at the Soroptimist Rooms on Wednesday at 7.30pm. The guest speaker will be David Allison, vice chairman of the National Vegetable Society who will give a talk entitled A Year in the Life of a Vegetable Grower. Annual membership is £5 and admission to the meetings is £1.50.
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, the day starts with Holy Communion at 8am followed by Parish Communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 5pm. On Tuesday. the church will welcome youngsters to the weekly Toddle into Church group for pre-school children and their parents or carers. This is open for anyone to pop along to. On Wednesday at 10.45am, there is a BCP Holy Communion service.

STEETON:
Flower Club: For their December meeting, Steeton Flower Club members spent an enjoyable evening creating festive Christmas table designs incorporating some interesting wire work, inspired by Pat Daley. The next meeting will be a skills night at Sutton Village Hall on Thursday, January 28, at 7.30pm when the theme will be Looking Forward to Spring, which members can interpret in any way they wish with their own choice of container and spring plant material. Choir rehearsals: KVU Singers – a mixed voice choir singing a range of secular and sacred music – rehearse in the South Craven Baptist Church, Holme Lane, Sutton, every Wednesday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. Hall talk: Westhouse Village Hall will welcome guest speaker Dr Lesley Curtis tomorrow at 7.30pm to share her story, From Everton to Westhouse, a remarkable head teacher’s journey. Entry is £1 for adults and free for children. All are welcome.
Coffee mornings: Westhouse Chapel’s monthly coffee morning restart on Wednesday, January 27, at 10am. Donations for coffee and cake will be given to local charities.

TOSSIDE:
Hall dance: More than 50 people had an enjoyable Christmas dance at the community hall with Alan Cookson. There were 21 winners in the raffle and thanks go to all who have donated raffle prizes throughout the year, those who helped in any way and the public for their loyal attendance. There is no dance in January and the next one, with Alan, is on Friday, February 19, at 8pm.
Whist and dominoes: There were 14 tables in play at the Christmas drive. MCs were T Robinson and P Metcalfe. WIGGLESWORTH:
Community Centre: On Wednesday, it’s the Meet and Eat lunch, with the quiz later at 8pm. On Saturday, January 23, there will be a three-course meal served to celebrate Robbie Burns. Tickets cost £15 and places are limited so you do need to book. Ring 01729 840794. Bacon Butty Saturdays are held every week from 11am to 1pm and Zumba sessions are every Thursday from 7.30pm. There are two craft groups that meet twice a month, one on Monday evenings and another on Friday during the day. There is also a quilting group that meets once a month on a Sunday. Whist and dominoes are held every last Wednesday of the month and also every fifth Saturday when it occurs.
