A TEENAGE driver from High Bentham was airlifted to hospital following a five-vehicle accident on Settle bypass.

Firefighters had to cut 18-year-old Rickie Cooper from his Rover 200. He was flown by air ambulance to Airedale Hospital with suspected spinal injuries, but was discharged after treatment.

His 19-year-old male passenger suffered cuts and bruises and was out of the car on the fire crew's arrival. He was taken to hospital by road ambulance.

The incident also involved a tractor driven by a 21-year-old from Kirkby Lonsdale and a Scania lorry, driven by a 26-year-old man from Clitheroe. They were both uninjured.

The accident occurred after the three vehicles were in a line of traffic. After colliding with the Scania, the Rover spun across the carriageway and hit two lorries parked in a lay-by. Their occupants were also unhurt.

The accident occurred at 9.05am on Tuesday and firefighters from Settle and Bentham attended, along with a heavy rescue unit from Ripon. Police reopened the road at 2pm.
