RETIRED art teacher Graham Jervis has left the classroom for the beauty of the Aire Valley.

After 22 years as head of art and design at Upper Wharfedale School in Threshfield, a health scare last year persuaded him to take early retirement.

Now, from his studio in Cononley, he has turned painting and drawing into a full-time occupation. Mr Jervis, 55, said: "I work in many different styles. Some of my work is very detailed, some photographic realism and I also do abstract."

His influences range from German 16th century painter Albrecht Durer to abstract artist Mark Rothko.

He is also inspired by the Aire Valley where he lives and the Spanish countryside, where he has a home.

After being turned down by North Yorkshire Open Studios - an Arts Council-backed showcase for local artists - he has set up the Independent Open Studios of North Yorkshire, of which he is the only member.

At his first open gallery event last weekend, he sold 10 paintings and received commissions for four more.

"I was a bit miffed when I was turned down by North Yorkshire Open Studios, but I've done really well so far," he said.

Graham's work can be seen at his open gallery, Oddfellows Hall, Cononley, tomorrow, Sunday and on Bank Holiday Monday from 11am to 4.30pm.
