SKIPTON
History Society: Skipton History Society heard Gillian Waters give an illustrated talk entitled Guy Fawkes: Yorkshireman! The story of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot is well known with the failed attempt by a number of provincial English Catholics to destroy parliament. Guy Fawkes was born in York and as a boy attended St Peter’s School in the city. Gillian raised the question as to why Fawkes was the best known of the plotters as he was very much a minor plotter supporting Robert Catesby. Possibly the answer might be that he was not a wealthy gentleman, unlike most of the other plotters who had close family links, had been a mercenary in the pay of Spain and was a Yorkshireman, possibly with a foreign accent. The next meeting is in the Swadford Centre, Skipton, tonight at 7.30pm when John Holroyd will give a talk with slides entitled Why Go Abroad.
Coffee morning: Trinity Methodist Church will host a coffee morning on Saturday from 9.30am to 11am. Proceeds are for the Tearfund which works with some of the poorest of the world’s poor.
Lacemakers: The January meeting of the Craven Guild of Lacemakers was well attended and a new member was welcomed to the group. The Guild is again entering the National John Bull Lacemaking competition this year, the theme being Celebrations. As 2016 marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, this is the guild’s chosen subject. Members have been busy making individual pieces of lace which have now been collected in to be assembled into the final picture, depicting the canal as it wends its way through Skipton. This year also marks the guilds 30th anniversary and venues were to be discussed for a celebratory meal. The next meeting will be at Christ Church next Thursday, February 18, from 10am to 3.30m. For more information, contact 01535 656637.

Finally shots of Moroccan architecture were admired. Peter Holt then took the audience to Western Canada, which he had visited with his family. His pictures of the scenery were well received by those present.
Retired Men’s Forum: Antarctica, via the Falkland Islands, was the subject of Geoff Budd’s talk to members last Tuesday. Since the conflict in 1982, the islands have became a popular tourist destination with as many as 1,500 cruise ships visiting during the season. The vast uninhabited continent of Antarctica was awe-inspiring and spectacular and great care was taken that nothing was left that could contaminate its pristine beauty. The forum meets every Tuesday at 10am in the Soroptimists Rooms until the end of March. Next week, Bill and Sue Palmer will show a video of Austria in 2000.
Navy news: The February meeting of Skipton and District Royal Naval Association was held in the RAFA headquarters on Shortbank Road. The meeting opened with Nelson’s Prayer before Trafalgar and was followed by the Loyal Toast to the Queen.
