Church news: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion for Palm Sunday at Austwick Church at 9.30am when Palm crosses will be blessed and distributed. BARNOLDSWICK
Rotary Club: Colin Hubbard told Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians about a bike ride in South India. He concentrated on the first part of his journey covering 900km, with a further 1,500km left to talk about. He described the amazing towering temples covered with exquisite stone carving and more than one world heritage site. Aspiring stone carvers have to complete a 12-year apprenticeship. He said the streets were “incredibly noisy”, but the people he met were charming and helpful and he never felt threatened.
St Andrew’s: Tonight sees the final meeting in the Lent series. Toddlers meet tomorrow at 9.30am. There will be no meeting on Good Friday but sessions resume for the following two weeks before a two-week break for school holidays. On Sunday – Palm Sunday – the preachers at the 10.30am service are the Revs Norman Cumming and David Edmondson. The Rev Ruth Jackson will lead the 6.30pm service. There is a prayer hour each Monday at 10am. On Maundy Thursday there will be a reflective service at 8pm and on Good Friday, the Walk of Witness will start from the Independent Methodist Church at 10am. Priory Church: On Sunday, Palm Sunday, there will be Communion (said) at 8am and at 10.30am there will be a procession of palms and sung eucharist with a reading of the Passion. At 4.30pm, there will be a performance of Tribulation and Sorrow have Come Upon Me, a sequence of words and music for Palm Sunday, with Cantores Salicium. Holy Communion will be held on Monday and Tuesday at 7pm and on Wednesday at 10am. On Maundy Thursday at 7pm there will be a Eucharist of the Last Supper with foot washing and watch before the blessed sacrament. On Good Friday, March 25, at 10am, the church will hold a children’s service and hot cross buns will be served. At noon there will be the three hours devotion with the liturgy of Good Friday. Memorial bench: The Bradley Show committee is to organise a memorial bench for Neil Pate. Neil was the bookings secretary for the village hall for many years. He was also a keen fell runner and consistently won the trophy for the fastest local runner. If anyone would like to contribute towards the cost of the bench, which is planned for the playing fields, please leave a contribution at the village store.
Women’s Institute: The next meeting of the WI will be held in the village hall at 7pm on Monday when members will have a hands-on demonstration of line dancing.
Methodist Church: The Methodist Church will hold an Easter workshop next Thursday, March 24, between 3.30pm and 5pm, where there will be various activities and refreshments. There will be an Easter Sunday service and Sunday School on March 27, to which everyone is welcome. The next Messy Church will be held on Sunday, May 15, between 3pm and 5pm. This year’s charity concert will be held on Saturday, June 18.
Parish council: There have been nine responses to the vacancy for parish clerk and interviews are being arranged. The final draft of Bradley’s Neighbourhood Plan is due to go out to public consultation at the end of the month.
School news: Cracoe class (class two) enjoyed a visit to St. Mary’s Church, during which they got to play the organ and ring the bell. Farnhill Class (class three) had a visit from the “Bug lady”, when they got to handle giant snails, cockroaches and stick insects. The school is holding a Fashion Show at 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 20, and tickets are on sale now at the school and village shop, at £5 each.

Moroccan evening: Saturday night’s Moroccan celebration in the village institute was a huge success, raising more than the £1,000 target set by the organiser, Megan Hall. She said everyone had lots of fun playing the different games, finding out about Morocco and eating the chicken tagine donated by New Laithe Farm Shop and cous cous made by Rolands in Utley. Fruit Festival: The parishioners and friends of St Oswald’s Church invite everyone to join them at their Oranges and Lemons festival on Sunday. The event is being held to join coincide with the International Marmalade Festival and awards, held at Dalemain House near Penrith. A ‘peel’ of bells will be rung throughout the country to help to celebrate the event and the bells at St Oswald’s will be rung using the method St Clement’s Bob Minor. Parish council: At the March meeting of Ingleton Parish Council, M Sutton reported on the progress of the B4RN project which was going very well. Regarding threatened cuts to pharmacy services, it was agreed that the clerk should write to the MP to protest. Cllr Ward raised the issue of the recent clouding of the river and the chairman confirmed that this had been reported to the Environment Agency who had inspected the site and ascertained that it had been due to a faulty pump at the quarry. Councillors agreed that the 1940s Weekend group should be given permission to use the Square and the Park for their event. A serious pothole was reported near Tansy Terrace and some on the A65 near Cold Cotes. These together with the subsidence near the Main Street/A65 junction will be reported by the clerk. Cllr Metcalfe informed members that tenders for the pump track had been sent out and the deadline was March 26. Public consultation could be in early to mid-April.

Film night: The Ribblesdale Moving Picture Show (Tramps) continues its season of foreign films at Victoria Hall on Wednesday, March 30, with a screening of Cycling with Molière. This will be shown in French with English subtitles. Tickets cost £5 on the door and the show starts 7.45pm

Charity coffee: The coffee pot session on Tuesday, April 5, at St John’s Methodist Church will be in aid of Railway Children, which provides protection and opportunities for children with nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to. It currently works in India, Africa and the UK. The coffee pot will be open from 10am to noon.
Justice and peace: The Justice and Peace Group will meet on Wednesday, April 13. The group is bringing a group of refugees from Bradford to help with the lambing in Malhamdale. It will organise a meal for them at the Meeting House and there will be a talk from Judy Rogers of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. Members may also be particularly interested in a number of events during Settle Stories Weekend. On April 2 at the Friends Meeting House, there is Story Telling For Change at 10am and a talk by David Babbs, the founder of the 38 Degrees campaign group at 2pm. Not listed in the advertising brochure for Settle Stories is a free additional talk on the Fair Tax Campaign on Friday, April 1, at 5.30pm at the Meeting House.

Settle Stories: This year Settle Stories Festival 2016 will take place in April instead of October. During the weekend of April 1 to 3, there will be a wide range of comedy, stories, music and other events taking place at a range of venues across the town. This is the biggest Settle Stories Festival yet, with more than 50 events packed into the three days. Remember too, stories are not just for children, there are events for all ages. Fashion show: The Friends of Victoria Hall invite you to a fashion show on Thursday, April 21, at Victoria Hall. The evening will feature a range of fashions by Ahernes of Hellifield.
WI workshops: Settle WI is holding two craft workshops on Wednesday, April 27, in the Catholic Church Hall, Craven Terrace, Settle. Annie Austen-Meek will demonstrate how to make a ‘softpot’ garden container while Sue Amphlett, of Cottontail Crafts, will give an introduction to Needlefelting – sculpting wool into figures and forms using a barbed felting needle. Each course costs £20 and includes all materials and tuition. Everyone is welcome, regardless of whether they are WI members or not. Embroiderers’ Guild: Alison Larkin, a talented needlewoman, will give an illustrated talk on Captain Cook’s Waistcoat to Skipton Embroiderers’ Guild on Monday in Christ Church Hall. Alison will describe her research into the waistcoat, and its resulting reconstruction. Members will meet for chat and stitch from 10am and the talk will start at 1pm. Anyone interested in Captain Cook, or this project, is welcome to attend.
History Society: Life-enhancing inventions like the flushing lavatory, the telephone and electric light bulbs were all products of the prolifically productive Victoria era which were explored by Derek Clabburn at Skipton History Society. His talk, Unusual Victorian Legacies 1830-1919, revealed the major impact of inventions on the society of the time which saw the rise of the railways and transport infrastructures, engineering projects like the London Sewage system and the construction of gas works in cities and towns. The Great Exhibition showcased the greatest innovations of the century. The next meeting of the group is on Thursday, March 24, in the Swadford Centre, Skipton, from 7.30pm when Chris Murphy will give an illustrated talk on the Battle of Towton which took place on March 29, 1461.
First Circle: The Skipton Italian Circle will hold its first meeting of the year today at the Soroptimist Rooms, Otley Street, Skipton. Steve Ragnall will give a talk on Cook Bay on the Amalfi Coast: an exploration of the life and death of Captain James Cook at 7.30pm. It will be followed by the annual general meeting. Refreshments will be available from 7pm. Admission is free for members and £5 for visitors.
Christ Church: Sunday is Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week. There will be a service of Holy Communion at 8am, followed by a united service in Christ Church for Christ Church and Holy Trinity at 9.30am, which will include the distribution of palms. Evening Prayer will be held at 6.30pm. On Monday, there will be prayers at St Mary’s Carleton, at 9.30am and a service of Reflections at Holy Trinity at 7pm. Prayers will take place at 9.30am on Tuesday in Christ Church, and Holy Communion at 7.30pm in St Mary’s, Embsay. On Wednesday, Christ Church will hold a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am and The Stations of the Cross at 7.30pm. There will be prayers at 9.30am in Christ Church on Maundy Thursday, March 24, and at 7.30pm, a Solemn Eucharist and Watch will take place at St Mary’s, Carleton, until 10.30pm.
Retired Men’s Forum: Tony Burkitt gave an illustrated talk about the American Canyons, which are situated in the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. The highlights were the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. Next week, the annual general meeting will be held at 10am and will be followed by the annual ladies lunch when the guest speaker will be journalist and TV presenter Guy Williams.
Camera Club: Stuart James from Winewall gave a slide show on a visit to Burma with a group two years ago. It is now possible for the tourist to get around more having been an almost closed country for a long time. The people and the countryside were well covered in the show with a history on the country thrown in. The last competition of the season was the set subjects of boats and circles and was won by Tony Rostron.
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, Palm Sunday, the day starts at Holy Trinity Church with Holy Communion at 8am followed by a service at Christ Church, Skipton at 9.30am. At 4.15pm Holy Trinity’s bellringers will ring a quarter peal and then at 5pm, there is a Family Communion. Toddle into Church is each Tuesday at 2pm and is open to all pre-school children and their carers. On Wednesday is a service of Holy Communion BCP at 10.45am.
Navy farewell: Skipton and District Royal Naval Association members have said farewell to their oldest shipmate Harry Ryecroft, who ‘crossed the bar’ earlier this month. Harry served in the Royal Navy in the Second World War and took part in the evacuation of British Expeditionary Force troops from Dunkirk in 1940. The next meeting of the association is on Tuesday, April 5, at 7.30pm in the RAF Association headquarters in Shortbank Road.
