THE upcoming Bollywood Awards spurred a shop in Grassington into organising a series of multi-cultural events in the village.

Rockin' Zebra, a not-for-profit shop which concentrates on goods made from recycled materials, welcomed Yasmin, of Amaali, who gave visitors a taste of Eastern culture by demonstrating henna painting.

Meanwhile, in the town hall people could make cushions from recycled saris and there were activities for children including food making, costume demonstrations, Mhendi painting, stories and music. The grand finale was Black Cat Theatre presenting a traditional Indian marionette show.

Rockin' Zebra owner Ainsley Nutter said: "We now live in a multi-cultural society and I feel that the only way to progress as a community on all levels is through awareness and, therefore, understanding of each other's traditions and beliefs."
