THE newly restored 14th century Hellifield Peel has missed out on a property "Oscar".

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Pro Yorkshire Awards recognise outstanding development, and Hellifield Peel was one of six shortlisted from 80 entries in the building conservation category.

Leeds architect Francis Shaw and his wife, Karen, have turned the once-ruinous peel house into an eco-friendly family home.

Its restoration to former glory was revealed in the Craven Herald and became the subject of a Channel 4's Grand Designs programme.

The Peel, a medieval fortification, was high on English Heritage's "at risk" register for historic properties which were in danger of being lost forever.

When the Shaws bought it, the building was in a desperate state. The roof had long since caved in, its walls were crumbling and trees were growing out of the centre.

The couple painstakingly returned it to its former glory, using old documents and photographs for guidance, and have created a magnificent family home.

The awards, chosen by a panel of property professionals, were presented at a gala dinner at Leeds Town Hall on Friday, when Hellifield Peel was pipped to the post by the eventual winner in its category - Middleton Lodge, in Ilkley.
