VICE-president Joan Evans has taken over the reins of the 110-year-old Skipton Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Mrs Evans, who runs Oswaldtwistle Mill, on Coach Street, took over the presidency at the group's annual general meeting.

The event, held at the town's Herriot's Hotel, also marked the chamber's 110th anniversary.

Mrs Evans, who will serve in the post for two years, takes over from Bob Wright, who has held top roles within the chamber for eight years.

She said the biggest challenge facing the group was its exploration of forming a BID (Business Improvement District) in Skipton.

This would mean businesses paying higher business rates, but the extra money would be used to fund initiatives to benefit the town and its traders. The process could take between two and five years to complete.

Skipton Chamber of Trade and Commerce started life in 1897 as The Skipton Traders' Association.

It currently has 151 members and among its tasks are organising the town's Medieval Festival, held on the first two Sundays in December, and Christmas trees for businesses.
