Public meeting: Austwick Parish Hall Council invites all villagers aged 18 and over to a public meeting in the parish hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 24. The council intends to sell an area of parish hall land which is situated behind 2 Ivy Cottages. It believes that the sale of this land will be of financial benefit to the hall without any detriment its amenities. Bowling Club: On Saturday, Austwick was away to Ingleton and lost by three games to four and by 83 points to 93. The Bill Smith Trophy was due to be held on Monday, but was postponed due to the very wet green. On Saturday, Austwick are away to Hornby for a 1.30pm start.
Coffee morning: Mary and Gordon James are holding a coffee morning in aid of Parkinson’s UK on Saturday from 10.30am to noon at Barndale (next to Wood View on the green).

BARNOLDSWICK
Probus Club: West Craven Probus will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday. It will feature a talk by Harold Hoggarth on the North West Passage. It will take place at St Joseph’s Community Centre, Bolland Street, starting with coffee from 10am. Last week, 51 members enjoyed a slideshow of Peru, presented by Richard Gilbert.
Rotary club: Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians learned of a £45,000 project to pump water to a Nepalese mountain-top school. The Rotary Foundation agreed to fund half and the district also chipped in, leaving £11,000 to find. In fact, £17,000 was raised. Jane Wadsworth, secretary of Accrington Rotary Club, was one of a party of 10 who visited the site this year to see the progress made. She said the school now had toilets and washbasins and there was also water for the village.
St Andrew’s: The Rev David Edmondson will lead the 10.30am Holy Communion service on Sunday. The Now Praise service will take place at 6.30pm. The prayer hour takes place from 10am on Monday. On Friday, May 13, the toddlers group runs from 9.30am and a Bible study will take place from 7.30pm at Woodlands. Messy Church, with the theme of ‘power from on high’, will be held from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday, May 14. The day will feature crafts, songs, games and food.

BENTHAM
Historical Society: At the AGM of the Ewecross Historical Society meeting, Sir John Kerr stood down as chairman having completed five years in office. He gave his report concluding by praising this viable, friendly and well-informed society. He was presented with a book token and life membership of the society for him and his wife. Dr Mike Winstanley was elected chairman, Edward Huddleston, secretary, Melinda Elder, treasurer – she had served as membership secretary to retiring treasurer John Wilson – and Jenny Fisher, membership secretary. The committee was re-elected and comprises David Alder, Sara Mason, Margaret Owen and John Wilson. Jenny Charnley is to be asked to serve on the committee. Edward Huddleston then gave a presentation of History from a Hot Air Balloon from Caton to Keasden looking at points of historical interest. Beginning with the Lune Valley flood plain, he said that in 1794 it carried 2,000 head of cattle and 5,000 sheep. Flying over Bentham, Edward spoke of the enclosure in 1767 of the Huge Bentham moor, pointing out a 13th century vaccary around Seat Hall owned by the Ellershaws. Nearing the boundary with Keasden, he pointed out a 13th century mill pond on Ridding Lane and also the 17th century mill dam in the Forest of Mewith. The evening concluded with a Jacob’s join supper. The next meeting will be on September 26.

BOLTON ABBEY

Parish council: Preparations for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, a Glorious 90 weekend on June 11 and 12, are proceeding apace. On Saturday, June 11, afternoon tea will be served in the village hall from 3pm to 5pm, accompanied by ‘Royal Variety’ entertainment. Anyone needing a lift is asked to contact any member of the parish council or leave your details at Linda’s Hair Shop. Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway has designed a logo for the publicity and is also hoping to run special trains and arrange vintage transport from the station. The evening food and live entertainment will take the form of a dance from 7.30pm to midnight. The dress code will be from the 1920s to the present day. Tickets will be on sale from mid-May at various outlets. On Sunday, June 12, there will be a range of children’s events on the school field (or in the school if it is wet).

Good Neighbours: Many thanks go to everyone who came along to support the Bake Off on Saturday, April 9, especially Ros Fawcett and Ann Horner, who judged the entries. Judith Robinson scooped first prize in three categories for her lemon drizzle cake, shortbread biscuits and scones, leaving only the cupcake over 12s prize to be won by the youngest entry in this class, Rebecca. The under fives category was won by a fairytale castle, and the six to 11 class saw a joint first prize awarded. A total of £100 was raised for the project. Fundraising will continue and anyone who would like to help should visit the group’s JustGiving page.
Community Library: The library is holding a Design and Make a Crown competition for children to celebrate HM The Queen’s 90th birthday. Crowns should be made at home and then the name and age of the child written inside.They all need to be handed in to the library on Thursday, June 9, between 3pm and 7pm or on Friday, June 10, between 2pm and 5pm. The crowns will then be on display in the village hall on Saturday, June 11, and they can be collected in the afternoon. There will be four categories in total and the winners will receive book tokens. The categories are: five and under, six and seven years, eight and nine years and 10 and 11 years.

Parish council: Cllr Patrick Mulligan updated Farnhill Parish Council on the Local Plan. He informed the parish council that up until the meeting on April 4, Farnhill and Kildwick had not been included in the housing allocation sites but that changed at the meeting when the planning officer proposed having two houses per year included for Kildwick/Farnhill. Craven has an allocation of 256 houses. The draft plan is available, together with a feedback form, from cravendc.gov.uk/new localplan or hard copies can be viewed at Belle Vue Square offices or local libraries. The parish council resolved to change the dates of its meetings. They will now be held on the fourth Thursday of the month with the next being on May 26. NYCC Street Lighting has provided the costs for a new lantern to be attached to a NPG pole to replace light No 50 at the top of Starkey Lane. The estimates for a standard 30W LED lantern were £1,120 plus VAT and for a decorative lantern, £1,623 plus VAT. The parish council resolved that due to the position and the performance of the light, the standard 30W LED would be the best choice. It was reported that street light No 31 was out and the clerk will report it. The council resolved that ARB Tree Surgeons should carry out an inspection of trees owned by the parish council. No response had been received regarding a request to Craven District Council to identify a suitable place to leave waste bins to avoid them blowing into the road. Cllr Mulligan explained that Paul Florentine from Waste Management had now left CDC, but matters would be addressed. Cllr Bramley reported that the grass had been cut at the play area and there were no issues of concern. The clerk said Airedale Chemicals had offered to contribute towards a defibrillator.

Primary school: Pupils from Year Six recently joined with Year Six pupils from Rathmell, Long Preston, Hellifield, Thornton-in-Craven and Embsay to take part in the Craven Young Citizen and Crucial Crew Day. Congratulations go to Edie, who was presented with a prize for her winning poster design. Class Two pupils took part in a successful residential visit to Buckden House. They worked well with pupils from Rathmell and enjoyed a range of activities from high wires to archery! Congratulations go to the team who took part in the recent North Craven Football tournament. Erin was awarded the Player of the Tournament trophy. There was more sporting success when the cluster schools for North Craven staged a Tri Golf session and all Year Five pupils took part. One of the Giggleswick teams was placed first overall and received gold medals. The girls’ team received the trophy for most outstanding teamwork. In spite of the very cold conditions, a large number of pupils took part in this cluster schools’ Quad Athletics event – another sporting first in North Craven – and there were some very successful outcomes. The year Five/Six team was placed second overall (out of 10 teams) and first in the small schools’ competition, qualifying for the next round in York. Jimmy and Edie were placed third out of the 87 participants. In addition, Joel and Jimmy have achieved UKA Awards – bronze and silver respectively – and Edie has reached Step 10, which means she is only one step away from achieving the bronze award. Mollie took part in the UK Accordion Championships in Liverpool and returned with two trophies – one for her duet and one for her solo performance. Her group performance also achieved first place.
Theatre events: Pupils will be treading the boards at Giggleswick School’s Richard Whiteley Theatre. On Monday and Tuesday, the school’s performing arts students will present their AS level Theatre Studies production of the sinister and surreal thriller Pomona by Alistair McDowall. During the first hymn, colour parties from each group presented their flags at the altar. Two Ingleton Scouts read the parable of the Good Samaritan. The colour parties collected their flags during the last hymn.

Film night: The Ingleton Rural Community Association will hold a film night at the community centre next Thursday, May 12, at 7pm. The featured film will be Woman in Gold and tickets cost £5.
Royal celebration: The people of Ingleton got together to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday under the leadership of Beryl Morphet. Mr Bubbles oversaw a children’s disco in the centre where later the names of the nominated gala queen and her attendants were announced. People of all ages were positioned at intervals around the football field. Cllr Carl Lis lit torch, which passed through several hands before Beryl Brown, representing Ingleborough WI, carried it up to the beacon. It was then exchanged for the original torch carried up Ingleborough in the relay on the Queen’s coronation night in 1953 by Roger Todd. He was acting as marshal this time and he lit the torch and handed it to Beryl to light the beacon at 7.30pm. Elaine Ward led the singing of the National Anthem followed by Happy Birthday and For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow. An excellent firework display was enjoyed by all who attended. Another celebration is planned for June 11 to mark the Queen’s official birthday.

Ukulele sessions: Allan Evans is running a monthly ukulele session in the Institute. The sessions run on the fourth Friday of the month in Langcliffe Institute from 7pm to 9pm and the cost is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children (parents must stay). The next ukulele session is on Friday, May 27.

Pool friends: The April draw of the Friends of Settle Swimming Pool 200 Club took place at The Talbot and was drawn by Russell East. Gavagan Art: A new exhibition featuring the work of David Thomas, Jacquie Denby and Anna Lambert will run at the gallery until May 30. The work includes still life, abstract landscapes and ceramics.
Victoria Hall: Tomorrow sees Daniel Kemish visit Settle with his Fools and Money tour. Daniel is an Outlaw/Americana artist showcasing tones from his American influences. On Sunday, there will be music from multi award-winning Nordic folk band Basco. Friday, May 13, sees The Company of Players – 12 of the best emerging musicians on the UK folk and acoustic scene - in a collaborative performance of new folk music, celebrating the works of William Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his death. Gallery on the Green: There is still time to catch an unusual exhibition at the Gallery, staged to mark the visit of the Tour de Yorkshire to Settle. It examines the links between art and the world of cycling. The exhibition has been supported by Settle Town Council and will remain in place until May 20.
Hit and Run boxing: The Hit and Run boxing club offers sessions for adults and children and takes place twice a week at St Mary and St Michael Church Hall. The club meets on Saturday between 10.30am and 11.30am for children aged six to 12 years and from 11.30am to 12.30pm for those aged 13 and over. Nepalese talk: Ruth and Steve O’Brien will present an illustrated talk at Settle Parish Church on Wednesday at 7.30pm following their recent visit to Nepal. Twelve months on from the earthquake which devastated the country, they will show how the people are rebuilding their lives.
Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will meet on Monday, May 16, at 7.30pm at Townhead Court for a lecture by Oliver Wright, an award-winning Leeds-based professional photographer, who spent the winter being the Northern Lights guide at Abisco National Park in Sweden. There will be no gallery at this meeting.

Tea dances: The next of the monthly tea dances at Silsden Town Hall will be held on Monday when dance leader Andrea Wortley will welcome experienced and novice dancers alike. Tuition is also available. The event begins at 1pm and refreshments will be served by the Friends of Silsden Town Hall.
Ladies Circle: A delightful musical evening was in store for those who came along to the April meeting of the Ladies Circle – the last in the current session. Katie Roberts, who lives in Haworth, brought along her handmade harp and played a variety of music, many pieces having been written for her by her husband. From her early beginnings, playing at the Grassington Festival, she now has a collection of 33 harps, including one she has made herself. Her playing was interspersed with amusing stories of the many events she has played at. The next meeting will be in September at Silsden Methodist Church.
Coffee mornings: Saturday provides the opportunity for two coffee mornings. The gala committee is promising a fun-filled activity morning at St James’ Church, culminating in the selection of the 2016 King and Queen. It will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Meanwhile, Coffee, Cakes and Cameraderie at the Methodist Church will offer a slightly more sedate setting with bacon sandwiches, various stalls and refreshments from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Musical night: The Sound of Musicals – a night of songs from some well-known musicals performed by local artists – will take place on Saturday at 7pm. Tickets are available from Twiggs newsagents or can be paid for on the door. All proceeds will go to Manorlands Hospice and Silsden Methodist Church.
Quilt exhibition: An exhibition of quilts by local makers is being held at Silsden Methodist Church next Saturday, May 14, from 10am to 4pm.

Annual meeting: Middletown Community Association will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, May 18, at 7pm in the town’s Quaker Meeting House. All residents are welcome to attend and raise any neighbourhood issues.
Christ Church: Bishop James Bell will celebrate a Solemn Eucharist for Ascension Day tonight at 7.30pm. On Sunday, Christ Church will hold a Family Eucharist at 9.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. Two meetings from a series entitled Conversations for Growing Together in Love will be held on Tuesday from 10am to noon and Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm, both at Christ Church Vicarage. The regular weekly Holy Communion will take place at 9.30am on Wednesday, followed by Toddler Praise at 10.30am (term time only). This is a time of play, activities and talk held in the Church Hall.
Lacemakers: Fifteen members attended the April meeting of the Lacemakers which was also the annual meeting. A new secretary was elected, with Liz Matthews taking over from Enid Borthwick. The chairman and treasurer remain the same. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Guild and members will celebrate this with a meal. Arrangements will be made later. The next meeting will be at Christ Church Hall, Skipton, on Thursday, May 19, from 10am to 3.30pm and will include a talk by lace teacher Elizabeth Burgess at 10.30am. Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church will hold a coffee morning on Saturday from 10am to noon to raise funds for Christian Aid. There will be a homemade cake stall, a bric a brac stall and a raffle. On Sunday, at 10.30am, the Junior Church will celebrate its anniversary when the service will be led by Mr Hopkins. Parish meeting: Litton Parish Meeting will hold its AGM on Tuesday at 7.30pm at the Queens, Litton.
Potato competition: The famous potato growing competition is back in Arncliffe. Potatoes can be bought from The Falcon tomorrow and Saturday for £1 each. Plant them during the summer and return them for the weigh-in on Sunday, September 11, between 4pm and 5pm. There will be prizes for the adult and child with the heaviest crop and the heaviest single potato.

WIGGLESWORTH
Community Centre: There were two lots of whist and dominoes last week. Bacon Butties on Saturday, are doing great and lots of people have volunteered already but the centre needs three more helpers on Saturday, May 21, and one on Saturday, June 4.
