Women’s Institute: At the June meeting of Austwick WI, Trish Bugeja entertained with a selection of her Eggstrordinary Eggs. She described how she became interested in decorating eggs and demonstrated how she embellishes duck, geese, ostrich, rhea and emu eggs. The meeting on July 14 will be a “garden meeting” at Beck House courtesy of Gwen and Graham Cleverly.
Bowling Club: Austwick Bowling Club was away to Slaidburn last week and lost by four games to three and 88 points to 81. On Saturday, Ingleton hosted the Home Guard Trophy, which is a round robin where everyone plays everyone else. The home side won with 166 points, Austwick came second with 153 points. Bentham and Burton in Lonsdale both had 127 points. Sunday saw a club competition – the Triangle Trophy. J Simpson was the winner and B Heath runner up.
Church news: On Sunday, there will be a 9.30am Holy Communion at Austwick, an 11am family communion and baptism at Clapham, a 6.45pm Evensong at Keasden and a 7pm Evensong at Eldroth.

BARNOLDSWICK
Rotary club: NHS Foundation Trust volunteer governor for West Craven, Val Kimberley, told Barnoldswick and Earby Rotarians about her role and responsibilities. She provided a link between the community and the hospital. One of the questions put to her was about the difficulties of parking at Airedale. She said that parking was being organised in-house and should be easier this summer, with 80 extra spaces in the west car park and a barrier system under which patients and visitors will be charged for the length of time they stay.
St Andrew’s: On Sunday, the preacher at the 10.30am service will be the Rev Peter Wightman and at 6pm, the Rev Wilfred Robinson. A prayer hour will be held on Monday from 10am and on Friday, toddlers meet from 9.30am with a bible study from 7.30pm.

BOLTON ABBEY
Priory Church: The Priory Church will only be partly open until further notice as the new lighting scheme progresses. The church is fully open during the weekends. During June. it is running a photographic competition for visitors to Bolton Abbey. Each week the photographs will be judged and the winner will receive a prize. On Sunday there will be a said communion at 8am, a Sung Eucharist at 10.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. Concerts: On Saturday at 7pm, Cantores Olicanae will present A Summer Serenade at the Priory Church. It will be a mix of choral music for a lighthearted summer evening with Alan Horsey as conductor. There will also be music from Geoff Cloke, trumpet, and the Robert Sudall Jazz Trio. Tickets are £12 from The Grove Music Shop and on the door. Next Saturday, June 25, at 7.30pm in the Priory Church there will be a concert with Leeds Philharmonic Chorus, entitled Simple Gifts. The programme will include Songs of Freedom, a moving organ piece played by Alan Horsey, five Negro spirituals and The Armed Man which is a powerful and compelling account of the consequences of war. Charity concert: You are invited to the Bradley Methodist Church Charity Concert on Saturday. It starts at 7pm in the schoolroom. Tickets cost £5 and £2.50 for children aged over two years and are available from Bradley School, the village shop or on the door. Two charities will benefit from the proceeds – Cancer Research UK and March For Mangoes, set up to support the Kambe Timboni Community in Kenya. There will be a variety of local performers, including the school, village musicians and members of Skipton Amateur Theatre Group.
Bradley Show: The newly extended Bradley Show, to be held on September 3-4, needs your support. There are a variety of roles including programme secretary, raffle secretary, poultry steward, duck race organiser, first aider and gate stewards. If you are able to help, add your name to the list of jobs, which is at the village store. New for this year will be a fun dog show and the show classes will be open to everyone.
Film Club: The next showing from Film Club will be Dirty Dancing (15), on Thursday, June 30, at 7pm. This will be a fundraiser for Friends of Bradley School, so a small donation would be appreciated.
School news: Congratulations to the year five and six cricket team who played in the semi-finals at Settle and came second. The school’s Gardening Club is requesting donations of plants for planting up tyres around the edge of the playground; berries, thorns and fruit plants are not suitable, but other varieties would be very welcome. The school is collecting the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers.
Parish council: The parish council will meet on Tuesday in the village hall from 7.30pm.
Sky dive: Bradley resident Derek Wrathall is planning to do a sky dive on Saturday, August 20, and is looking for people who would be willing to sponsor him. Proceeds will go to the Army Benevolent Fund.

Handel’s Messiah: There will be a performance of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday at 7pm at St Wilfrid’s, Burnsall. The soloists are truly amazing. Jen Dakin who sings the soprano solos, has broadcast for BBC television and radio. The contralto, Hannah Mason, will sing in 2016 with English National Opera in their productions of The Magic Flute and Akhnaten. Bass is John Cunningham who recently made his debut at Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Don Carlo. The main star is the tenor, Bonaventura Bottone, who is an operatic tenor who has performed at many of the world’s leading opera houses. The main aim of the evening is to raise funds for St Wilfrid’s Roof Fund. Admission is £15 for adults and £5 for under 16s. Young Farmers: Last Tuesday Coniston Cold Young Farmers met at Dry Rigg Quarry at Helwith Bridge. Members were shown how a modern gritstone quarry operates alongside the natural environment of great crested newts and a colony of sand martins. Members also visited Arcow Quarry next door to look at the new railhead recently constructed to ease heavy traffic through local towns and villages. Freddie Howarth thanked quarry managers Mik Cardus, Mick Lambert and foreman Carl for a very interesting visit.

It will leave the village hall at 10.03am, 11.28am, 12.58pm and 2.23pm and help will be provided should you need it. There will also be pick-up points at the end of Brackenley Lane and at Crossbank.
Steam railway: The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway is offering a very special Father’s Day treat – a cab ride behind one of its large main line diesel locomotives. For just £40, dad can be given a Father’s Day to remember with a cab ride over the whole length of the railway line. There will also be a buffet car service. Passengers pay once and can ride all day. Parish council: The council agreed to make a start with a draft Community Emergency Plan, after Robin Derry, senior emergency planning officer with the NYCC Emergency Planning Unit, was invited to give a presentation. A risk assessment for the village will be the first thing to draft and the council would like to hear from parishioners willing to volunteer to help if ever an emergency were to happen. People with certain skills and knowledge or space to put up people are encouraged to contact the clerk, Marijke Hill. Theatre events: On Saturday, Tom Figgins will perform at the Richard Whiteley Theatre. His music has begun to establish a regular fan base and is starting to be heard on Radio 2 and BBC Introducing. Show meeting: Members of Horton-in-Ribblesdale Show Committee met recently and catering arrangements were made for the event. The Friends of Horton Primary School will provide on-field catering, while Mrs Huddleston will co-ordinate the refreshments for the judges’ lunches in the village hall. It was decided not to hold a baking disaster class this year and that the maximum age for the young handlers’ classes would remain at under 16. Exhibitors in the indoor classes will be asked to indicate on their entry forms if they would like their entries to be auctioned off after the prizegiving to raise funds for the show. The entertainment for children will include a bouncy castle. Committee members heard that a few bookings had been received from people wishing to hire their marquee for private events. The next meeting will take place on August 16 at 7pm.
St Oswald’s: A successful fundraising event was held recently at Langcliffe Institute when the members and friends of the congregation at St Oswald’s Church served afternoon teas. A total of £474.50 was raised for church funds. The church service on Sunday — the fourth after Trinity — will be held at 10.30am and will be for the three parishes of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Stainforth and Langcliffe. The preacher will be David Towers.

Parish council: At the start of the June meeting of Ingleton Parish Council, all members agreed that Cllr Weaire should be reappointed as chairman. A member of the public had highlighted the practice of various organisations and individuals of fixing banners to the viaduct without permission of the owners. It was agreed that this could not be countenanced by the parish council. Quotations had been received for crown lifting a beech tree on the Brow and it was agreed to accept the one from G Charlesworth. Cllr Brown complained about the uneven pavement near the Main Street entrance to the community centre and it was agreed that the clerk should approach Yorkshire Water to request action. It was also agreed that the clerk should contact Highways to ascertain when work would be carried out on the marked potholes on Main Street. The clerk reported that new stage curtains had been purchased for the community centre and many of the skylights had been re-sealed. Cllr Metcalfe informed members that the B4RN project for Chapel-le-Dale was moving ahead. A quotation from J Morphet to empty the bin at the pump track for £6 per week plus VAT was accepted by the meeting. Quotations for maintenance and the buying of a shed for tools were also accepted. Various signs were discussed for the future and it was also agreed that a self closing spring would be attached to the pedestrian gate at the Low Demesne end of the site to prevent young cyclists shooting out into the road. Cllr Brown reported that the swimming pool had had an excellent start to the season with a very busy first week.

Church news: The fundraising committee wishes to thank everyone who supported the fundraising events held in the institute. There was a great atmosphere and the following amounts were taken; tombola £84, craft stall £45, mouse hunt £20 and teas £436. After all expenses had been paid, a grand total of £537 was raised. The winner of the mouse hunt was Amie Greer-Todd.

Railway walks: The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Railway have two walks planned for this weekend. On Saturday, there will be a walk from Dent to Sedbergh via Dales Way. This is an 11-mile moderate walk leaving Dent Station at 10.16am and using a service bus to return to Dent Station. On Sunday there is a nine-mile strenuous Swaledale walk. This leaves Ribblehead at 10.28am and connects with a service bus to Keld and returns by bus from Gunnerside. No reservation is needed. There are also free guided walking tours around the Ribblehead Viaduct site and the Blea Moor Tunnel on Wednesdays, June 22 and 29. Gallery on the Green: The gallery is staging an exhibition of silk paintings by local artist Christine Carradice. The countryside of the Dales – the limestone crags, green fields, drystone walls, barns, farmhouses and flowers – have all been captured on silk. Please note that this exhibition has now been extended to July 30.
Operatic Society: Following an informal get-together, Settle Amateur Operatic Society begins auditions for its annual performance. This year it will perform Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first musical, The Likes of Us, which is the story of Dr Barnardo. It will hold workshop sessions in the parish hall of St Mary and St Michael on Kirkgate, at 7pm on Monday and Wednesday. All are welcome.
Voices of Craven: The Voices of Craven: Communities in Chorus is a project which has brought together various singing groups under the direction of Tom Leech, the director of the Diocese of Leeds singing programme. A number of events by local professional soloists and musicians are taking place throughout the month culminating in a grand finale where all will perform together. The Grand Finale is a concert at Giggleswick School Chapel next Saturday, June 25, which will feature local choirs and a small orchestra.
Settle Pool: Settle Pool will hold its annual general meeting at the Friends Meeting House next Friday, June 24, at 7pm. This meeting is open to all.
Victoria Hall: Next Friday, June 24, there will be a performance by the six-piece folk, roots and rock ‘n’ roll combo, the Jon Palmer Acoustic Band. The line-up includes guitars, mandolin, whistle, double bass, violin and drums and everyone sings! On July 2, there is a return performance by popular Bradford band, Wilful Missing, which will be promoting its new CD album Unsinkable Sailor. The new songs feature subjects from Hannah Hauxwell to phosphate mining via Scottish independence and new babies. Settle Stories: Settle Stories will welcome renowned Belgian storyteller and musician, Iwan Kushka, to the town next Friday, June 24. He will present True Moon Tales — a story-concert for adults — accompanied by guitarist William Benzies and violinist Becky Doe. The event will take place at the Royal Oak at 7.30pm. Flower Pot Festival: Everyone is invited to help brighten up the town ready for the annual flowerpot festival in July. The festival aims to involve local organisations, businesses and individuals in the hope of raising a smile by decorating the town with quirky flowerpot characters. It is hoped to have all displays in place by next Saturday, June 25, so that a full town trail can be drawn up.
Silent auction: A silent auction will be held at Castlebergh Drill Hall next Saturday, June 25, between 11am and 5pm. The auction provides a chance to invest not only in a piece of art but also in the future of the young people in the town. Settle Scouts are currently fundraising to improve their Drill Hall premises to help not only local scouts but to also make them available to the community. They’ve teamed up with a number of local prominent and renowned artists for a special event. There will be refreshments served throughout the day and arts and crafts for young people.
TRAMPS: The next foreign film session at Victoria Hall will take place on Wednesday, June 29, when the film will be Le Meraviglie (The Wonders). This will be in Italian with English subtitles. The film focuses on the life of a family living a back to nature existence in rural Tuscany and how the arrival of a film crew from a TV reality show disrupts their life. The show starts at 7.45pm and admission is £5.
Coffee Pot: Each Tuesday St John’s Methodist Church holds a coffee pot session with homemade cakes in the coffee lounge. This is open to all and runs from 10am to noon. On the first Tuesday of the month the coffee pot is held in aid of a charity chosen by a member of the congregation. The charity on July 5 is Guide Dogs for the Blind. This is a UK charity set up in 1931 and the Settle branch is now in its fourth year of trading.
Quiet Day: A day of reflection for ordinary people and open to all will be held at St John’s Methodist Church next Saturday, June 25, from 10am-3.30pm. It will be a gentle space in which to be still rather than silent, using words, music, a walk, images, Bible and hymns. A packed lunch is required, but tea and coffee will be provided. Gala procession: Entry forms are available for this year’s gala procession. Why not get together with a group of friends and join in. Classes are: vehicular floats, gala queens and walking groups. There is a form on the gala facebook page ‘Silsden gala’ for anyone interested. The gala will be held on Sunday, July 31 and entries need to be in by July 1.
Proms on the Farm: The Proms on the Farm team are readying themselves for the 2016 edition of their successful take on the Last Night of the Proms. It will take place on Saturday, July 23, with the field open for people to get prepared at 2pm and the music starting at 7pm. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased from Twiggs newsagents or by phoning 01535 654509. Awning space must be pre-booked. Music will be provided by the Ripon City Band playing the prom favourites and featuring soloist Sarah Halstead. Also performing will be the Sultans of Swing and The Big Bang. All proceeds will go to Sue Ryder’s Manorlands Hospice and the Methodist Church.

Father’s Day special: Silsden AFC will hold a Father’s Day special at the Sports Club on Sunday from noon. There will be a resident DJ and the band will perform at about 3pm. Tickets are £6 in advance or £7 on the door and include a pie and peas supper. Performing will be Forever Mod, a three-piece live band who will play classic and revival covers from the Jam, the Who, Small Faces, the Kinks, Secret Affair, the Lambrettas and many more. Car boot sale: Silsden AFC will also host a car boot sale both this Sunday and next Sunday on the ground opposite Aldi. There is a lot of space for both buyers and sellers to park.

SKIPTON
Christ Church: Family Eucharist will be celebrated in Christ Church on Sunday at 9.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. The regular weekly service of Holy Communion will take place at 9.30am on Wednesday, followed by Toddler Praise, a period of talk, activities and refreshment for accompanied young children in Christ Church Hall. Christ Church Brownies meet on Wednesdays between 6.15pm and 7.30pm. Settle Orchestra will perform its summer concert in Christ Church at 7.30pm on Saturday.
Happy Bundays WI: A demonstration by the Body Shop was enjoyed and members were able to sample skin care and facial products. The next meeting of the new WI is at Champions Church on Monday at 8pm when Lisa Milnor will lead a Mindfulness session. Visitors and new members most welcome.
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion at 8am, a Parish Communion service at 9.45am and a special service to mark Refugee Week at 6pm, which will include hymns, readings and talks by some of the refugees themselves. On Tuesday the Toddle into Church activities for babies and pre-school children are in the Vestry Rooms between 2pm and 3pm. On Wednesday there is Holy Communion at 10.45am.
Rare books: Rare books, including 300-year-old including bibles, maps and the chronicles that Shakespeare consulted for his history plays, will be on view to the public at Skipton Library on Wednesday from 6pm-7pm. There will be a short talk at 6.15pm and refreshments will be available. All are welcome.
Oddfellows: There will be two events at the Three Links Club this weekend. On Saturday night there will be a horse race night. Six races will be shown on the big screen. Visitors are welcome. Methodist Church: Steeton Methodist Church will be serving cream teas on Saturday from 2pm-4pm. There will be a cake stall, a book stall, fancy goods and a raffle. Entrance is £3, which includes tea and scone with jam and cream. Proceeds will go towards new windows for the church.

Guided walk: Please join the Westhouse Walk next Sunday, June 26. The guided walk is part of the Overground Underground Festival and is a robust 5.6 miles. The registration and starting point is Uncle Jeremy’s Household shop in Ingleton at noon. The walk is free and you can bring a picnic lunch to enjoy along the way.
Coffee morning: A coffee morning will be held at Westhouse Chapel on Wednesday, June 29, from 10am to noon.
Flower festival: A flower festival will be held at St Oswald’s Church from July 1-3. Please come along and see the wonderful floral displays. Cream teas will be served each day.

TOSSIDE
Hall dance: The Mark Kitto Band will provide the music at the next monthly dance at the community hall tomorrow at 8pm. Admission is £6, which includes supper.
Band concert: The hugely popular Slaidburn Silver Band will return with its summer concert next Sunday, June 26, at 2.30pm. Admission is £4, which includes tea and cream scone.

Birthday exhibition: St Oswald’s Church, Arncliffe, is staging an exhibition to mark the 90th birthday of The Queen. It showcases the many celebrations that have been held at the church over the past nine decades, including baptisms and weddings. Entry is free, but donations are invited towards the tower fund.
Friends meeting: The trustees of the Friends of Arncliffe School will hold a meeting to agree the dissolution of the charity. It will take place at the Queen’s Arms, Litton, on Tuesday at 7.30pm.
Whist drive: The Halton Gill Reading Room will host a whist drive on the first Wednesday of the month at 2pm throughout the summer and autumn. Admission is £2, which includes refreshments and a a strip of raffle tickets. Proceeds go to the upkeep of the building.
Guided walk: A free eight-mile guided walk in search of the Bird’s Eye Primrose will be led by Yorkshire Dales Society chairman Mark Corner. It will take place on Saturday and will follow the Dales Way to Buckden before going through Eshber Wood and Knuckle Bone Pasture. Meet at the Blue Bell Inn, Kettlewell, at 10.30am.
Quarry walk: There will be an opportunity to view and walk around Threshfield Quarry on Wednesday from 10am-1pm. The event has been organised by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and visitors should meet at the quarry entrance.

WIGGLESWORTH
Community Centre: The Queen’s Birthday Party went ahead on Saturday, despite the rain. Residents caught up with friends and neighbours, ate lots of nice food, and enjoyed celebrating Her Majesty’s special birthday. Today’s ladies walk will meet at Long Preston Station at 7.30pm. Anyone needing a lift should meet at the community centre at 7.20pm. The centre is being used for voting next Thursday, June 23. Butty mornings are held each Saturday, 11am-1pm.
