BARNOLDSWICK
Probus Club: Fifty 50 West Craven Probus members listened to Chris Blacoe tell of his experience in School Life. As a teacher, he taught in schools from Liverpool to Nelson and there were many funny incidents along the way, as well as hardships.
St Andrew’s: The toddler group will hold a pirate party from 9.30am tomorrow, and children are invited to dress up if they wish. On Saturday, Messy Church with an Olympic theme will be held from 3pm to 5pm. The event will include races, games and refreshments. The Rev Norman Cumming will lead the 10.30am Sunday service and Hazel Edmondson will lead the 6pm service. On Monday, the prayer hour begins at 10am. Next Friday, July 22, the toddlers group’s annual outing will take place from 9.30am. Meet in Letcliffe Park with a picnic. A Bible study will be held at 7.30pm in the evening.

BOLTON ABBEY
Priory Church: On Sunday there will be a said Communion at 8am and a Sung Eucharist at 10.30am, at which the preacher will be the Rev Timothy Evans, director of pastoral studies on the Yorkshire Ministry Course and an honorary associate priest of Lancaster Priory. And, at 2pm, the church will host an outdoor evangelistic story-telling event, What’s the Story about the Holy Spirit, at 2pm. The day will round off with Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. On Wednesday there is a said communion service at 10am.

Christian Aid: The final total for this year’s Christian Aid door-to-door collection in Bradley has been confirmed as £878.89. Thanks go to collectors who gave their time so generously and to everyone in the village who supported the charity. The money raised will go directly towards saving the lives of some of the poorest people in the world. Women’s Institute: The work of the Guide Dogs for the Blind will be explored by Bradley WI members at their meeting in the village hall on Monday at 7pm.
Messy Church: There will be a Messy Church in the Methodist Church schoolroom on Sunday between 3pm and 5pm. The theme is The Big Picnic – there will be cooking, craft, collage, kite making, catching ducks, music and story time. Food will be served. The event is free and open to all the family. Bradley Show: Show schedules are being delivered around the village - please take completed entry forms, with money in a sealed envelope, and post in the show box at the village store. If anyone would like a stall at the show they can complete a form from the village stores and post with money into the show post box; the cost is £5 for charities and individuals and £25 for established businesses. There are a variety of roles which need support - if you are able to help please add your name to the list of jobs at the village store. New to this year’s show are Langstroth Gundogs and Airedale Beagles.
Parish council: The parish council will meet on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the village hall.

CARLETON
St Mary’s: St Mary’s Coffee Pot will be open from 2pm to 4pm tomorrow. A Service of Bread, Wine and Worship will be held at 11am on Sunday.
Playground party: The school’s playground party, organised by the PTA, takes place on tomorrow from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. There will be face painting, a bran tub, chocolate and bottle tombola, bouncy castle, coconut shy, a barbecue and other refreshments including homemade cakes. Donations of baking are welcomed (bring into school during the day).
Film night: A final film night of the spring/summer season will take place in the village hall on Saturday. The featured film will be the singalong version of Mamma Mia, which is packed with famous faces including Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. Doors and bar open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm.
Open gardens: Carleton Open Gardens will take place next Saturday and Sunday, July 23 to 24, from 1pm to 5pm. Refreshments will be on sale at church and donations of baking would be welcome. Entry is £3, with accompanied children free. Pay at the church and collect your Garden Guide. Sheeplechase: A Carleton “Sheeplechase” will take place on Sunday, July 31, from 9 am. This is a new event dreamed up by some parents to raise money for the village school and is being supported by the CCU, the PTA and the school governors. Catering for all standards of fitness, the race is a fusion of the classic steeplechase, tag rugby and hill running, a family event. Sponsored by Saltaire Brewery, the course runs the full length of Park Lane and is approximately 2.2 kilometres long with a 200 metre climb. Competitors will set off at 10 am in three waves for differing abilities: competitive, fun-runners and families, and half-distance. There will be medals and prizes for all finishers. Entertainment and refreshments stalls in the ‘event village’ around The Swan and the Social Club will create a village fete feel. You are encouraged to join in the fun by dressing as sheep and lambs on the day. Advance entry is £4 for adults (£6 on the day) and £2 for children (under 5s free). Family discounts are available. Village Store: Clapham Village Store will hold its second annual meeting in the village hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend and help celebrate the continuing success of the community shop, though only shareholders can vote on any resolutions put forward. If you would like to become a shareholder (or buy more shares) contact Diane Elphinstone on 015242 51813. The Village Store has received a second grant from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund, bringing the total it has received from this fund to just over £9,000. The funding has been used to buy new shelves and a vintage counter to finish off the new extension. The previous grant went towards shop appliances, the shop is very grateful for the support shown by the national park. Two new signs have been placed on the A65 to promote the store to passing motorists. It also features on a new information panel at Clapham Station, which promotes the Forest of Bowland and cycle and walking routes that pass through the village.

CONISTON COLD
St Peter’s Church: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion service from 9.30am.
Young Farmers: Last week, Coniston Cold Young farmers met at Settle College for their annual car treasure hunt. Last year’s winners Alastair and Julie Walton had the honour of setting this year’s route. Around 40 members travelled to Clapham and Eldroth finishing at North Ribblesdale Rugby Club for a pie and supper provided by Lucy Knowles. The winners were James Bolland, Emily Panter and Dani Moran with a near perfect score and second were the Wallbank family. Next week’s meeting is a judging night at Dykelands Farm at Airton.

St John’s: On Saturday, there will be a strawberry tea at 1 Windle Lane, Cononley, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm to raise funds for St John’s Church. Entrance is £3. On Sunday, there will be a service of Holy Communion at 8am and a service of Holy Communion at 11am, which will include children’s activities. The deadline for August/September edition of the parish magazine Onward, is next Sunday, July 24.
Open day: Cononley Cricket Club will host an open day at the Sports Club Pavilion on Sunday as part of the English Cricket Board sponsored events in association with Waitrose. There will be a number of T20 games to watch from 10.30am through to the early evening with real ales available at the sports bar, cakes stall, barbecue and raffle. There will also be kwik cricket available for younger children who would like to try out the game for the first time.
Bowls for beginners: Cononley Bowls Club will hold free classes for beginners on Mondays at 7pm. They are aimed at day workers who can’t make the sessions on Wednesdays at 1.30pm. Just turn up.

COWLING
Moonrakers: A packed Bancroft Room enjoyed the local history group’s first ever public talk. Sutton’s Mike Gill entertained the rapt audience with detailed, illustrated information about where and how mining and smelting had occurred in Cononley, Glusburn, Sutton and Cowling parishes. This was followed by many questions. One answer astounded everyone. To the question of how was lead formed, the answer was in the heat of a supernova star explosion, when the earth was still forming! Discussions then continued over refreshments. Thanks go to Mike for a very well-organised and informative talk, to all Moonrakers’ members for making the night run like clockwork and to local people for supporting the event.

Community centre: This is the final week for completing the Lancashire County Council consultation form asking for comments on the proposal to retain New Road Community Centre as a Neighbourhood Centre, which would allow the premises to remain open. Copies of the form are available from the white table in the foyer of the centre and when completed should be placed in the red tray underneath the white table. Saluki walk: The annual dog walk and fish and chip tea, open to all dogs, will take place at 11am on Saturday starting from St Peter’s Methodist Church. Earby Gardeners: The annual judging of traditional allotments and allotment gardens for the Sam Lawson Shield will take place on Saturday, July 30. All who wish to judge should meet at the School Lane allotments at 2pm.

ELDROTH
Walk and barbecue: The Eldroth Village Hall Walk, Barbecue and Games will be held on Sunday. The walk will depart from the village hall car park at 2pm followed by a barbecue and games at Elder Heath Barn from 4pm by kind permission of Floyd Schofield. The activities will be held in the village hall if wet.

Hall committee: The village hall committee will meet on Monday at 7pm in the hall’s supper room.
Embsay churches: On Sunday, St Mary’s Church will hold a family communion at 9.30am which will be a shorter form of service with children’s activities. At the Methodist Chapel, the 10.30am service will be led Mr A McAdam. On Tuesday, St Mary’s will hold a quiet Communion service at 10.30am with tea and coffee served afterwards and, from 2pm to 4pm, the church is open for tea, coffee, home baking and conversation.
Family picnic: The Skipton and Craven Parents Support Group will hold a woodland-inspired family picnic at Embsay Primary School next Saturday, July 23, between 11.30am and 1.30pm. Do come and join in, just bring a picnic and enjoy the bouncy castle, woodland crafts, mud kitchen, refreshments and much, much more. Entry is £1.50 per person with free admission for babies under one year old.
Drop-in surgery: PSCO Ruth Pearson’s next drop-in surgery at Samuel Taylors will be next Thursday, July 21, between 10.30am 11.30am in the coffee shop.
Parish council: At the North Yorkshire County Council Craven Area Committee, held in June, Cllr Shuttleworth attended as parish representative. Particular matters discussed which affect the parish were the extent, incidence and causes of flooding over the Christmas period and the possibility of re-instatement of a Saturday bus service. Flooding matters were primarily focused on culvert and other drainage limitations where a maintenance deficit was considered to be a primary factor. Several of these issues have already been addressed in the parish as a result of pressure from the parish council. There would, however, appear to be little early chance of the Saturday bus service being re-introduced due to funding limitations, but the matter is to be referred to the integrated transport executive of the county council for further consideration. Stepping Stones, the local mental health care charity, has undertaken summer planting around the Elm Tree. At the last parish council meeting councillors heard a presentation from Liz Roodhouse regarding the Fair Trade Scheme. The council was asked to consider if it wishes to support adoption of this scheme in the parish and this will be considered at the next council meeting.

The Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children aged four to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday, will be launched on Saturday. The theme is The Big Friendly Read. Those who complete the challenge will receive stickers and certificates at their school in the new autumn term.

St Andrew’s Church: On Saturday at 7.30pm, the Epiphany Singers will present a concert of choral music from the 16th to the 21st century. Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and free for under 16s. On Sunday there will be a service of Holy Communion at 8.15am and Holy Communion with Baptism at 10am. On Sunday afternoon the church will be open to visitors from 2.30pm to 4.30pm and tea and scones will be served in the parish rooms. Also on Sunday afternoon at 3pm the local churches will hold the annual Praise in the Park in Sutton Park. Each Wednesday there is a service of Holy Communion at 9.30am in the parish rooms.
History Group: The Farnhill and Kildwick History Group will meet at 7pm on Monday in Kildwick and Farnhill Institute. Maggie Fleming and Derek Barker, of Bradford U3A, will talk on Coal, Lime and Bricks from Kildwick to Micklethwaite Bridge and Eldwick. Their talk will look particularly at the workings of the Farnhill coal shutes. Admission is free.

Art Show: The Gargrave Art Show will commence today in the village hall and entry is free. As well as paintings by local people, there will also be displays of work by David Lamb, from Keighley, who won last year’s People’s Choice of Best in Show and Gargrave Primary School and the Pre-school. There is a special children’s competition, complete with prizes and certificates. The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust will also have a stall as part of the Flowers of the Dales Festival. The show will be open today between 11am and 7pm, tomorrow between 11am and 7pm, Saturday between 10am and 7pm and Sunday between 11am and 5.30pm.
Garden Party: Neville House will hold a garden party on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm. Entertainment will be provided by singer Stan Gray and refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon. There will also be a tombola, cake stall and raffle. Entry is free.
St Andrew’s: On Sunday, the church will hold a traditional BCP Communion at 8am and a Sung Eucharist at 10.45am.
Party thanks: The committee of the NSPCC Gargrave Branch would like to thank everyone who supported the garden party on Saturday. An amazing £1,060 was raised for the NSPCC charity.

Primary School: The school is very grateful to Timberworks Ltd for sponsoring its new sports kit. Its design and colours were chosen by some of the older pupils. In recent weeks year two pupils participated in the cluster schools mini-olympics event and one of the year five/six tag rugby teams travelled to Skipton to take part in the Craven Tag Rugby event. A huge number of key stage two participants took part in a cross country event. Special congratulations go to Jack (placed first) and Ned W (placed second) in the year three race; Phoebe (placed second) in the year five race and Edie (placed second) in the year six race. Congratulations also go to the year five/six quad athletics team (Tom, Joel, Edie, Jimmy, Joseph, James, Presley, Erin, Libby, Ruby, Melissa, Megan) who travelled to York to represent small schools in Craven. The team was placed fifth out of the eight participating teams. In the small schools’ category, Edie was sixth girl overall (bronze level) and Jimmy was second boy and second overall (silver level.) Well done to the year six pupils who took part in the Fast Forward to Secondary School, run by a team from the local churches, to support pupils’ transition to secondary school. Thank you also to those parents who attended the online safety workshop run by PCSO Jayne Grace. The school welcomed over 40 dads and grandads to school for a special Father’s Day lunch. Class three pupils took part in one of the wettest camps in the 29 years. This, however, was still lots of fun. Class one pupils enjoyed their visit to Lancaster Butterfly House where, in addition to the butterflies, they also met other creatures, including a snake and a giant snail! All key stage two pupils enjoyed a visit to Mearbeck Farm.

Art exhibition: Artist Michael Curran will hold his annual art exhibition in the ladies room of Grassington Town Hall from Saturday, July 30, to Sunday, August 14. Michael, who is from Rawdon, has been exhibiting at Grassington for many years and, once again, his daughter, Jenny, will stage a show of pictures from the world of dance.
Coffee morning: Grassington Pantoloons will hold their annual coffee morning in Church House on Saturday from 9.30am.
Curry and quiz: The Dales Playschool will hold a curry and quiz evening at the Fountaine Inn, Linton, on Wednesday from 7.30pm. Funds will go towards providing resources for the children.

Women’s Institute: Instead of a normal meeting in June, WI members had an outing to Coffee and Clay in Skipton where members demonstrated their painting talents. The next meeting is in the village hall next Thursday, July 21, starting at 7.15pm when there will be an evening with Doris and Elsie who will be portraying Their Lives and Troubles in humorous rhyme.
Flower Club: The North Craven Flower Club enjoyed a recent outing to the Holehird Gardens at Windermere, where members enjoyed a wonderful afternoon enjoying the beautiful gardens, which are managed entirely by volunteers of the Lakeland Horticultural Society. The club’s next meeting is at Hellifield Institute on Thursday, August 11 - not a Monday as stated in last week’s Craven Herald. At the next meeting, there will be a demonstration by Rebecca Hough at 7.30pm.
Coffee morning: Saturday’s coffee morning in the institute is a Pet Rescue event. It will start at 10am and will include stalls and a raffle.
Walking Group: The Walking Group meets on Sunday in Aherne’s car park at 1pm. Joan Townson will lead a six to seven mile medium category walk in the Long Preston area. Please wear suitable clothing. Accompanied children are welcome as are dogs on leads. For more details, contact Joan on 841144.

Gala practice: Practices for those taking part in Hellifield’s Got Talent on Friday, August 5, are held from 4pm in Hellifield Social Club on Sundays. Come along and join in with a song from your favourite artist. The general theme this year is Gone But Not Forgotten.

Parish council: Members of the public raised objections to the proposed development off Main Street. It was agreed by councillors that a revision of this application should be requested to create a single access point on Laundry Lane. Concerns were also raised about an increase in flood risks for the area and the loss of green space to the village. Comments were made by various members on the poor quality of repairs by Highways to the holes on Main Street and it was agreed that the clerk should write to Highways to complain. Cllr Weaire had received complaints about the amount of litter on the pump track site. It was confirmed that the contractors would be visiting the site this week to reseed and sort out possible drainage problems. There will be an official opening on July 24 at 4.30pm. The chairman reported on the progress of the village action team. M Sutton told members of the progress of the Thornton and Ingleton B4RN groups. The clerk reported that training sessions for volunteers for the library were to be organised for September, after which they would gain experience in the library before the takeover next April. An excellent start to the swimming pool season was reported, due to the good weather, and it was believed that the new pump track was having a positive effect on usage.

KELBROOK
St Mary’s: On Sunday at 11am, the church will hold a craft club service with communion and a visit by the Archdeacon, the Ven Bev Mason. It will be followed by lunch. There will be a children’s craft area.

Institute news: Last Sunday’s Teas, in aid of the Institute, raised £245 for the upkeep of the institute. Thank you to all who baked, set up, served, washed up, cleared away and, most importantly came and bought the homemade baked goods. Next Sunday’s teas are also in aid of the institute.
Show news: The Village Show will take place on Saturday, August 20. The subject for the poetry class is ‘generations’ and the free choice short story class is restricted to 1,000 words. Stories should be given to show secretary Ian Johnson before the end of July. The photography categories are: landscape within 10-mile radius, waterfall picture, local wildlife picture and a single bloom flower.

Operatic Society: Settle Amateur Operatic Society invite you to join them on a walking treasure hunt. This will leave from Ashfield car park at 6pm next Friday, July 22. Gallery on the Green: There is still time to catch the exhibition of silk paintings by local artist Christine Carradice at The Gallery on the Green. The countryside of the Dales – the limestone crags, green fields, drystone walls, barns, farmhouses and flowers – have all been captured on silk.
The Folly: The Folly is holding an open afternoon on Sunday between, 12.30pm and 4.30pm when tea and cake will be served. Admission is free with a charge of £2.50 for tea and cake.
Messy church: Churches Together invite you to join them for a Messy Church event in St John’s Hall on Sunday between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. There will be a range of crafts, games and celebration around the theme of Digging for bones before sharing a hot meal. The event is free but contributions can be made to cover costs.
Victoria Hall: This weekend sees the first Settle Beer Festival. There will be 18 ales from across the country on offer tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Next Friday, there will be music with Murphy’s Marbles and The Dubliners, featuring Sean Cannon, taking a journey through the ages of Irish music and song. Then all change for Glam Rockz on July 23, which is a fun tribute night to the music of the 70s. Tim Dalling, formerly of the New Rope String Band, will perform along with Ian Carr, Neil Harland and Rhona Dalling. On Friday, July 29, there will be the chance to see The Dolly Parton Story featuring Andrea Pattison, a professional singer of many years experience and acclaimed as the UK’s finest Dolly Parton tribute performer. Coffee Pot: Each Tuesday St John’s Methodist Church holds a “coffee pot” session with homemade cakes in the coffee lounge. This is open to all and runs from 10am to noon. On the first Tuesday of the month the coffee pot is held in aid of a nominated charity. Photographic Group: Settle Photographic Group will meet at Townhead Court on Monday at 7.30pm. There will be no gallery at this meeting. The lecturer will be Tony Potter, a very experienced and well-thought of photographer. He will bring a large number of his award-winning A3 prints and talk informally about his techniques.
Amnesty International: The next Amnesty letter writing session will take place at Friends Meeting House in Kirkgate on Wednesday between 5pm and 8pm. Hall friends: Every Tuesday, the Friends of Victoria Hall run a cafe in the hall from 10am to 2pm, providing a regular opportunity for the public to support the hall. As well as serving refreshments, there is an all-sorts stall, a book stall and a clothes rack as well as shoes and CDs/DVDs. On July 30, the friends will stage an all-sorts market. Refreshments will be available all day and tables can be booked on 01729 825718. The markets are open to the public from 9am to 3pm.
Women’s Institute: Members spent an amazing hour last Wednesday in the company of Anthea Venn of Quilting Antics, Settle. Gasps of surprise and amazement accompanied her revelations regarding the use of hitherto discarded tweed lengths; from Christmas wreaths surrounded by green tweed leaves, through doorstops filled with aquarium gravel to breathtaking cushions of quilted tweed with appliqué herons, kingfishers and other colourful birds. The craft competition was won by Jeanne Carr with her felted mermaid.
Gavagan Art: The gallery is hosting an exhibition of drawings and paintings by Margaret Uttley until 30 July. Entitled Fragile Moorland, this new exhibition of work by Settle-based artist Margaret Uttley focuses on peat moorlands and our relationship with this fragile but important environment.
Settle Stories: On August 5, Settle Stories will host a gala night at Victoria Hall, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm celebrating local voices through animation films made by community groups. The groups include adults with learning difficulties at the Resource Centre in Settle, Young People from Settle Youth Club, and Bentham and Gargrave Primary Schools. The films were created with Virpi Kettu who’s animated the likes of Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and the latest music video for Radiohead. Annual meeting: Silsden AFC will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, July 27, at 7pm at Silsden Sports Club. Any amendments to the constitution or items for any other business must be received no less than seven days before the date of the AGM.
Proms on Farm: The Proms on the Farm team will stage the 2016 edition of its successful take on the Last Night of the Proms next Saturday, July 23. The field will be open for people to get prepared at 2pm with the music starting at 7pm. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased from Twiggs newsagents or by phoning 01535 654509. Awning space must be pre-booked. Music will be provided by the Ripon City Band with soloist Sarah Halstead, the Sultans of Swing and The Big Bang. All proceeds will go to Manorlands and the Methodist Church.
Charity match: On Saturday, there will be a charity rugby match in the park between Silsden ARLFC and Bradford Sands 13. It will include stalls, refreshments, bouncy castle and a curtain raiser match between Silsden Storms U11s and Leeds Leopards U11s at 11.30am. The main match will start at 1.30pm and proceeds go to the Sands charity for still born and neonatal death.
Film show: The Grand Departy continues with a film show at the Methodist Church tonight at 7pm, followed by the community showcase event on Saturday. Wander around the town centre and visit the various community groups to see what they offer.
Duck do: The annual duck do will be held at the duck pond on Saturday. Ducks cost £1 each and are available from any of the majorettes or Duvals beauty salon or on the day from 11am. The race starts at noon and there will be cash prizes.
Dalesfest: Dalesfest 2016 will start tomorrow and run through to Sunday, with concerts both tomorrow and Saturday nights. There will be an open mic afternoon on Saturday and a slow picking session on Sunday as well as umpteen campsite picking sessions. Bands so far include Sam Barrett, Tilter Wheel, Hanks Company Band, the Hayley Sisters, The Down County Boys, Jay Walkers, The Howard Brothers and Catfish Skillet. Tower challenge: Call into Pauls DIY shop on Briggate and collect a small Eiffel tower for £1. Decorate these and take them along to the Methodist Church on community showcase on Saturday for the chance to win a prize. The competition is open to youngsters aged 15 and under.

Lacemakers: Several members of the Craven Guild of Lacemakers demonstrated their skills in Craven Court at the recent Sheep Day event in Skipton. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Guild and a celebratory meal is being planned to mark the event. The next meeting will be in Christ Church Hall next Thursday, July 20 from 10am to 3.30pm. Christ Church: Family Eucharist will be celebrated in Christ Church on Sunday at 9.30am and Evening Prayer at 6.30pm. The weekly service of Holy Communion will take place at 9.30am on Wednesday. It will be followed by Toddler Praise, a period of talk, activities and refreshment for accompanied young children in Christ Church Hall (term time only) to which all are invited. Christ Church Brownies meet on Wednesday evenings between 6.15pm and 7.30pm during term time.
Women’s Institute: Members of the Happy Bundays WI enjoyed a mindfulness evening led by Lisa Milnor. She talked about her work and then members took part in a practical session. The next meeting at Champions Church, Skipton, on Monday at 8pm when Carole Hill from the Healthy Lifestyle Studio will demonstrate solo salsa dance fitness. Visitors and new members are welcome.
Holy Trinity: On Sunday, there will be a Holy Communion at 8am, a Parish Communion at 9.45am and an evening service at 6pm. On Tuesday, the Toddle into Church activities for babies and pre-school children will be in the Vestry Rooms between 2pm and 3pm amd on Wednesday there is Holy Communion at 10.45am. The coffee shop will be open from 10am to 2pm, Wednesday to Friday, and the café, with a wider menu, on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

SUTTON-IN-CRAVEN
St Thomas’ Church: A summer fair will be held in the church on Saturday at 2pm with strawberry teas, cakes, plants, books, tombola, raffle, bric-a-brac and more. All are welcome. On Sunday, there will be a service of Holy Communion at 11.45am and the Fellowship of Churches will hold a Praise in the Park at the cenotaph at 3pm. If wet, this will be held in South Craven Baptist Church.

TOSSIDE
Hall dance: The next dance at Tosside Community Hall will take place tomorrow at 8pm. Admission is £6, which includes supper. Raffle winners at the last dance were O Dinsdale, I Alderson, N Healey, A Barton,J Roberts, M Mitchell and D Carter.
Whist and dominoes: There were 11 tables in play and MCs were T Robinson and A Taylor. Winners were: whist, ladies - P Parrott, A Pike, J Riley; gents - T Robinson, V Jones, N Hull, low B Peel; dominoes - A Sutcliffe, K Nowell, A Pickard, P Oddie, J Sagar, J Hull, low C Eastwood. Tea and cake: Hetton residents are invited to a tea and cake event at the Hetton Chapel Garden on September 11 from 2pm to 4pm. The gathering has been arranged to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Strawberry tea: Hetton Methodist Church will host a strawberry tea, with music by Earby Brass Band, at Hetton Church next Saturday, July 23, from 2.30pm to 5pm. There will be a cake stall in the schoolroom and admission is £6 for adults and £3 for children.
Women’s Institute: Rylstone Parish WI held a quiz on the Royal Family at its June meeting. It was won by Jill Holden, Kath Carlisle, Mary Sutcliffe and Sue Morris. A letter and card has since been received from Buckingham Palace in response to Rylstone’s own 90th anniversary, which will be stored in their own WI activities. The winner of the competition for a funny photograph was Hilda Wellock. The group visited Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage for this month’s meeting.
Scarecrow workshop: A scarecrow building workshop will be held in Kettlewell Village Hall on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm. There will be a frame provided along with straw and a variety of old clothes. All that is needed is some stuffing, plus a bit of imagination. The scarecrow festival runs from August 13 to 21.
Littondale Fete: Littondale Fete will be held on Saturday, August 13, starting at 1pm with the road race and fancy dress. This year’s theme is Historical Characters. There will be the usual fee races and aside stalls, plus children’s races and a strongman competition. There will also be individual competitions for painting, collage, decorated stone, and children’s exhibits.
Contemplative service: Buckden Schoolroom holds a fortnightly contemplative service on Thursdays at noon.
Christian Aid: Residents of Foxup, Heselden and Halton Hill contributed £110.72 to this year’s Christian Aid collection.
Tower abseil: St Oswald’s Church, Arncliffe, will hold a tower abseil on Saturday, September 24. Anyone wanting to join the fundraiser to pay for the repointing of the tower should contact 770124 or 770269.
Charity thanks: The Saving Lives Across Yorkshire charity has been thanked for raising a further £285.50 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance through its monthly coffee, cake and chat event at the Falcon Inn, Arncliffe. In total, £1,039.42 has been raised.
