A LEADING Norwegian climber is set to give a lecture honouring a famed Craven mountaineer at an event on Saturday.
Knut Tønsberg will give the honouring William Cecil Slingsby, the Craven mountaineer famed for the advances he made in Norwegian ascents, at an event in Settle.
The Tønsberg and Slingsby’s families have been linked through ascents of the prominent peak Store Skagastølstind across three generations.
Knut will be speaking as part of the Yorkshire Ramblers’ Club Annual Dinner celebrations on Saturday as they start their 125th year.
Cecil was supportive of the club’s foundation in 1892 and later served as its president for the decade from 1893. He was co-owner of the large mill at Carleton and climbed on the local crags such as Crookrise above Embsay.
The lecture starts at 5pm and further information is available from Michael Smith via smithjura@hotmail.com or 07814010165 by Tuesday.
