UNABLE to attend the funeral of his cousin following her sudden death, Andrew Overend left a lasting memory of her in the Himalaya.
He unveiled a plaque depicting the Yorkshire flag at Everest Base Camp in tribute to former Kirkby Malham teacher Jenny Cawthorne, who died aged 71.
Her brother, Mike Dibb, of The Old Barn, Malham, said his cousin Andrew erected the memorial while on an eight-day trek to Everest.
“His expedition, organised through a relative who is an army officer posted with the Gurkhas, had been arranged long before Jenny’s sudden death, so he could not make the funeral. He therefore decided to leave a lasting memorial to my sister. Jenny had lived in Malham for more than 20 years, having moved to be a teacher at Kirkby Malham school. She and her husband, Tony, were much loved members of the local community - they were past president and lady president of Malham show - and there was standing room only in the church for her funeral.”
