PANDORA’S Box, one of the greatest films of the silent era, will be shown by Skipton Film Club at the Plaza Cinema, Skipton, on Sunday, February 3.
The German 1929 melodrama was directed by GW Pabst and stars the charismatic American actress, Louise Brooks. It has now been re-leased across the country by the British Film Institute and is impacting on a whole new generation of film goers.
Made at the height of the Weimar Republic, Brooks plays Lulu, a woman so charismatic and alluring that few can avoid her charms. Although made almost 100 years ago, the film is strikingly modern in its look and analysis of a society in moral decline.
A spokesman for Skipton Film Club, said: “Pabst was one of the great directors of the silent period. Here, he gives us a film that has a look that even now contemporary audiences find thrilling. To see a film from this era is a rare event for spectators– it is the first silent feature the film club have presented for its enthusiastic following.
“It may well be the first time that Pandora’s Box has been screened in Skipton. For those who have not seen a silent film on the big screen you are in for a treat – the use of camera is dazzling and the film treats its audiences as adults – it certainly does not pull its punches in its depiction of depravity and corruption in a doomed society. The club is thrilled to present Pandora’s Box as its latest screening. We think Pabst’s great film’s time has come again – to Skipton and beyond.” Pandora’s Box , rated PG, will be shown at The Plaza on February 3 at 5.15pm. Members and non members welcome.
