THIS attractive - if not slightly grumpy-looking - chap is a French partridge and was captured on camera by Roger Nelson, of Hazelwood, Bolton Abbey.

He said the French, or red-legged, partridge has been repeatedly introduced in Britain over the last three centuries, but only started to colonise the Dales about 50 years ago. Now it has almost entirely replaced our smaller and more subtly-coloured English grey partridge.
