A MALE climber died yesterday (Sunday) afternoon after falling from the top of Castleberg Rock, Settle.
The Cave Rescue Organisation, two air ambulances, a road ambulance, police and a rapid response vehicle, all attended the incident, which happened at just after 1pm. The man was declared dead at the scene despite the efforts of two people who had seen him fall and who had delivered CPR in an effort to save him.
A CRO spokesperson said: "Two visitors, who had seen him fall, ran down and attempted CPR for about 15 minutes.
"When the first team member arrived on scene, with a defibrillator, it told them not to shock the patient. The doctor and paramedics from two air ambulances, a road ambulance and Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) rapid response vehicle confirmed life extinct. Once the necessary formalities were over, team members stretchered the climber down to a team Land Rover."
The CRO praised the two people who tried to help the climber.
"Although unsuccessful in resuscitating the patient, on this occasion, the two visitors who administered CPR are to be commended for their attempt. It isn’t everyone who could adapt from pleasant afternoon out to dealing with such an emergency, but perhaps everyone should learn how."
Castleberg Rock towers over Settle Market Place and has been popular with visitors, climbers and walkers for centuries. It is a well known beauty spot.
