MALHAM Show Day was spectacular in so many ways the weather was sunny and dry, the animals on show were of the highest quality; the produce, art & handicrafts were exceptional; and there seemed to be a feeling of anticipation across the Show for locals and visitors alike that has been missing for a long time.
Malham Show was back again in 2021 following the enforced break in 2020 as with all other shows and events which became a casualty of the pandemic.
It was always a difficult decision but the committee decided to go ahead with the show this year and as it turned out it was the correct choice.
The Show was a real celebration of Malhamdale, our farming, our lifestyles and the community spirit which we have all sadly missed over the last year or so. As it was described in the 1950s….a show neither too small to be of only local interest nor too large to be impersonal. This is still the same today.
There was a good show of sheep across all the breeds. William Wildman picking up the Runley Mill Shield for the Champion Mule, S. Procter won the J. Thompson Trophy for the Champion Bluefaced Leicester and Barrie Thomas won the Jack Carr Malham Moor Cup for the Champion Swaledale.
The Dairy cattle trophies were dominated by W&M Oldfield winning a handful and not surprisingly collecting the Wolfenden Trophy for the Overall Champion Dairy Animal. However, Archie Allen came away with the JF Mellin Cup for the Champion Local Dairy Animal.
John Stephenson won the Thomson Cup for the Overall Champion of the Commercial Beef and Pure Bred Animals and David Booth won the Champion Highland Animal.
Honours were shared across the Working Hunter, Ridden, In-hand and Show Jumping classes but both Hayley Carter and Heather Kershaw both winning a couple of Trophies each.
The produce tent was a showcase for a fantastic display of talent across the board. Exhibitors brought some amazing exhibits in all the classes including baking, preserves, art, home grown vegetables, flowers, art, crafts, needlework, knitting and especially the childrens’ work.
Local children Flynn Cartman was awarded the Mrs PD Green Trophy for the Most Outstanding Exhibit in the Children’s Art; Edward Forrow collected the Jean Broadey Cup for the Outstanding Exhibit made as a Primary School Activity.
As ever the children’s sports and egg throwing proved very popular.
The races are very informal and the children just turn up and race. The races are split into age groups for 11years and under they all take part in sack races, skipping rope races and running races.
Egg throwing becomes more competitive every year, there were a few egg splats but also some impressive catching and throwing. Local winners this year were Arthur Peel and Joe Hudson.
Malham was one of the few traditional shows to take place this year and the weather made good for a good turnout at both the Show and the fell races for juniors and seniors. Winner of the Senior race was Malham local Joe Hudson of Keighley & Craven in a time of 17:39 whilst the first woman was Alice Jones of Wharfedale Harriers in 22:27.
A good turnout, both in numbers and standards, of both Morris Minors and Vintage Tractors this year. MP John won the Field Studies Council Trophy for the Best Morris Minor and David Kendall collected the Alan Barker Memorial Trophy for the Best Vintage Tractor.
Junior Kickstart sponsored by The Lister Arms, Malham was invited back for a second year due to their popularity and fantastic stunts and tricks. The young riders from Bradford Trials Club put on an amazing show of bike skills over a number of challenging obstacles.
Malham Show wouldn’t be quite the same without the regular crowd pleasers and attractions: Langstroth Gun Dog displays, Haworth Brass Band, farmers’ market and crafts, sheep dog displays, sheep shearing displays, Thwaites Brewery Dray with beautiful Shire horses Ribble and Wainwright and dog classes and fancy dress
An auction of donated produce for charity and the speed shearing competition finished off the day in style.
