LAST week’s church was Eastburn Methodist Church and was correctly guessed by Lynnda Smith of Eastburn.
Eastburn Methodist Church is part of the Airedale Methodist Circuit.
Eastburn’s church, off Main Road, is part of the Craven Church section of the circuit, which also includes St Andrew’s, Cowling; St Peter’s, Cross Hills; and the churches at Silsden and Steeton.
The Rev Claire Stainsby is minister of the Craven Church and Glenda Coogan is its lay worker.
The Steeton and Eastburn village website describes how the Skipton Road Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1888 and the Primitive Methodist Chapel in 1889.
The old Primitive Methodist chapel was on the area of land between the present school and Main Road, currently used as the school’s playground. It became dilapidated and was demolished around 1975.
The Wesleyan chapel also had to be demolished in 1988, but a new chapel was incorporated into the old chapel Sunday School building, which was alongside the site of the old chapel.
By 1859 the members of the Primitive Methodist Chapel had outgrown their cottage and had bought a plot of land in Parsley Green from Peter Barrett, millwright, on which to erect a chapel or meeting house. It was completed in 1861.
By 1968 the upkeep of the 1872 Chapel was causing concern for a smaller congregation and the building was demolished, and a new chapel was created within the Sunday school building.
What about this week’s guest church, pictured above by Philip Winstanley. It is across the border in Lancashire, but that was not always the case.
