TRIBUTES have been paid to Janet Tempest of Broughton Hall who died on Christmas Day at the age of 91.
Mrs Tempest, who was born in Argentina in 1930, was a devout Catholic and a devotee of Mother Teresa. She supported Mother Teresa's work around the world and on meeting her in India, said it was something that had 'never seemed possible'.
Her son, Roger Tempest, said: "Mum was a remarkable and well loved person who centred her life around helping others.
"Her first seven years were in Argentina then her family moved to South Africa and finally the last 50 years were spent in the Yorkshire Dales at Broughton with her husband Henry Tempest and their five children.
"Her primary lifetime work was supporting Mother Teresa’s work. 18 years ago she had a serious accident which left her in a wheelchair and with limited mobility; and yet she kept inspiring everybody around her. She leaves a wonderful legacy for us all. We will miss her greatly."
In 2007, Mrs Tempest met HRH Princess Anne, who was at Broughton Hall to visit the charity, Carers Resource; and in 2012, she opened a new extension at St Stephen's Primary School, Skipton.
Her husband, Henry, died aged 93 in 2017. She leaves five children, Bridget, Annie, Mary, Roger and Piers; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Her funeral with just family and close friends will take place at Broughton Chapel. A memorial to her life is being planned for the early summer.
