Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This Sunday is Palm Sunday. It marks the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem when the crowd waved palm branches shouting ‘Hosanna to the Son of David’. It also marks the start of Holy Week when we walk with Christ to the cross on Good Friday and then triumphantly proclaim the Resurrection on Easter Day. However, as well as the joyful acclamations, we also read the Passion narrative this Sunday. This reminds us that, despite the joyful welcome that Jesus was given on his entry into Jerusalem, this turned ugly by the end of week when the same crowd called for his crucifixion. May this Sunday remind us all that, even though we think we are his disciples, we all have the potential to betray Christ ourselves.

Church news: On Sunday at 10.30 am we will celebrate the Sung Eucharist with reading of the Passion and distribution of palm. At 3.30 pm we will have choral and organ music for Passiontide.

The north wind on the fells was really cold but the sun did come out in time for the lunch break. The ramblers headed towards Penyghent and Hull Pot which is a short distance from both the Three Peaks and Pennine Way path. Closer to Penyghent was Hunt Pot, an impressive sight, the water pouring in but never a sound of it hitting the bottom. The walkers then headed back towards the summit of Penyghent where saxifrage was putting on a great display from the limestone rocks. A rarely-spotted Leeds United supporter kindly took a photograph of the group as he was running up Penyghent twice in training for the forthcoming Three Peaks Race.
