POLICE have praised the work of Rural Watch volunteers after alleged criminals were stopped in their tracks in Gargrave last night (Thursday).
Although they got away, a stolen vehicle was recovered.
Officers followed two vehicles, a small hatchback and a Ford Transit, after they were sighted travelling in convoy at around 10.45pm. Both vehicles made off at speed, and the Transit was later abandoned in the middle of the road, blocking the police vehicle. The occupants got away in the hatchback.
The Transit, identified as stolen in West Yorks at beginning of April, was recovered and investigations are ongoing.
A police spokesperson said: "Whilst disappointing not to catch occupants on the night the fact that Rural Watch patrols were active and helped in the recovery of stolen property and disrupted criminals shows the real benefits of such a scheme.
"We now have active schemes in all areas of Craven helping to keep Craven safe."
Anyone interested in being part of a scheme, is asked to email SNACraven@northyorkshire.police.uk
