Street Market & Cuckoo Festival: Thursday 2nd June. Start the jubilee weekend off in style at the Austwick Street Market. There will be something for everyone; entertainment, stalls, food and fell race. Circus entertainer, Zoot, will keep younger visitors entertained whilst Settle & Giggleswick Brass Band will be leading a fancy dress parade from the school at 10.45am. Children are invited to dress up royally to mark the Jubilee weekend.
There will also be face painting, games and fell races for children and young people of 8 years and over. Other highlights include the stunning Thwaites Dray Horses, Oak Jazz Band, vintage cars and live ceilidh and guitar music. Stalls will be selling crafts, bric a brac, second hand household items, clothes, books and plants.
The legendary bacon butty stall will be open to keep you fuelled up, plus pie and peas, a hog roast, sandwiches, cakes, scones, teas and coffees and other drinks. Thanks to our many generous sponsors there will be excellent prizes for winners of the Grand Draw and in the tombola.
The Austwick Amble Fell Race has become a key event in its own right in the running community. The 8 mile adult course takes a stunning route through limestone scenery above the village. Full details, including online entries and rules are available via the village website www.austwick.org Junior races start at 11.20am and the senior race at 1.00pm. Registration on the day is open from 10.15 am on the village green. The main street through the village will be closed between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm on Thursday 2 June, so there will be no through access to/from Helwith Bridge and the B6479. All funds raised on the day go towards the upkeep of two key village facilities used by many – the Parish Hall and Playing Fields so we really appreciate everyone’s support. Entry to the Street Market is with the programme, suggested donation £1 on the gate, children free.

Church news: Holy Trinity Church, Cowling. On Sunday there will be a service of Choral Holy Communion at 10.45am led by Rev Helen Collings. Trinity Choir, conducted by James Ashworth will lead the singing which also includes the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ from Handel’s ‘Messiah’

Gardening on the Peggy Wilson Field: People are invited to come along on Saturdays between 2pm and 4pm to help work on the School’s wildlife plot. No experience necessary, but any horticultural wisdom would be welcome.

Giggleswick
Church news: Our church, with others in Christians Together in Settle and District, joined in the well-attended and moving Journey to the Cross on Good Friday and the Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday. Later that morning, we met for the traditional Easter Communion, in our ancient church building, beautifully decorated with white and yellow flower arrangements and an “Easter garden”. In the afternoon, our three parishes joined Café Church at Settle parish church, where there was a lively celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, assisted by a recorder group from Settle Primary School. Next Sunday, 25th. 8am Holy Communion (BCP). 9.30am Family Worship, including an infant Baptism.

Jubilee Choir: This is a pop up choir which will last just for the Jubilee. Help us celebrate this historic occasion and bring people together after such a difficult two years. This will be a mix of school children, singers, funk wire, villagers and their friends. There is no need to read music or be able to sing well. Stripey Badger Bookshop: Cream Tea and Meet the Author - Cream Tea and Meet the Author with local author, Alexandra Potter, whose book One Good Thing is published in that week. This event is one of our Cream Tea and Meet the Author Events. A perfect way to find your new favourite book you will be treated to a delicious cream tea and scone whilst getting to listen, and discuss, all about books with some really great authors.
Tickets for these events are £5 and include your cream tea and scone. Tickets can be purchased either in The Stripey Badger Bookshop or online. The event will take place at The Stripey Badger Bookshop on Tuesday 10th May at 2:30pm.
Ballet and Opera Season: ‘live by satellite’ from the Royal Opera House - The Devonshire Institute open with a short programme of six productions, running through to May 2022. Tickets for all productions are on sale at £15 each available from the Hub.
Swan Lake: This classic fairy-tale represents the battle between good and evil, and the attempt of love to conquer all. The magic of the lakes, forests and palaces is brought to life with glittering designs by John Macfarlane and a sublime score by Tchaikovsky. The Royal Ballet’s sumptuous production of Swan Lake returns to the Royal Opera House stage after its 2020 revival was interrupted by the pandemic’s closure of theatres. This classic of the repertory is testament to the late choreographer Liam Scarlett’s abiding love of classicism and innate musicality, which shine through this production. This is a ‘live by satellite’ performance from the Royal Opera House. Thursday 19th May 2022 7:15pm.

Church news: Members and friends of St.Oswalds church carried the Cross through the Village last week and on arrival at St.Oswalds they enjoyed the traditional Easter fayre of hot cross buns.
A service for the combined parishes of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Stainforth and Langcliffe will be held in St. Oswalds church on Sunday at 10.30.a.m. A service the following week on Sunday 1st May will be on safari by kind invitation of the Davidson family at Newhouses Farm. It will be the first time an on farm lambing service will have been held since 2019. Please bring along a garden chair, and a cake or savoury for afternoon tea, the latter of which can be enjoyed after the service.

Ukraine Fundraiser Coffee Morning and Easter Egg Hunt: Thank you to everyone who came to the coffee morning on Saturday, or donated prizes. We raised nearly £2,500. We are overwhelmed with the generosity of the people in the area. Thanks again from Cathy and Helen.

Kirkby Malham
Church News: St Michael’s Kirkby Malham. On Sunday 24th April there will be a service of Holy Communion at 10am. All are welcome, including children, and coffee is served after the service. Do come and join us. St Michael’s is open every day of the year from 9am to dusk for visitors.
Malhamdale Local History Group: the next talk will be on Thursday 21st April at 7.30pm in Kirkby Malham Parish Hall. Dr Mike Spence will give a talk entitled “A Monastic Flock in 14th Century Malham.” A chance discovery of a document in the Lancashire Records Office set Mike off on a quest to discover its meaning and what it revealed about Malham in the 14th Century. His detective work uncovered much about farming practices, the role of the monasteries, land disputes and much more. Everyone welcome. Members free, Visitors £3.
Art in the Dale: new perspectives on landscape in Malhamdale. This exhibition will run from 6th to 16th May at St Michael’s Church, Kirkby Malham, open each day from 9am to 6pm, free admission. Nine local artists, and the pupils of Kirkby Malham Primary school, will be displaying their work. We will have live music at weekends, an evening concert on 14th May at 7pm by Christine Dittman and ‘Ings Strings’, and refreshments available. Lothersdale
Over 50s: Yvonne Pinder from Burnley was the guest speaker at last Wednesday’s meeting of Lothersdale Over 50s. Yvonne is an artist who decorates plant pots and other containers and, during an extremely interesting talk she demonstrated her very unusual techniques. Brenda Shuttleworth proposed a vote of thanks and then presented a card and gift to 2 members who had recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. Tea and biscuits were served and the next meeting will be in the village hall on Wednesday April 27 at 2pm when David Aldred will give a film show entitled The Canadian Rockies. New members and guests are always welcome.
Salterforth
Women’s Institute: The new president, Donna Martin, welcomed members. She then went straight into the business meeting where it was decided that on Salterforth Fun Day, June 12, we would have a tombola stall. The WI has also been given the go ahead to plant a tree on the playing fields to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. A crab apple tree is the popular choice.
Salterforth W I has also been awarded a certificate to celebrate 55 years since it was formed, and was presented to our president at the recent Spring Council Meeting in Harrogate.
A game of bingo and a quiz followed the business meeting and supper with an Easter theme was served.
The May meeting will take the form of an evening walk around Skipton Woods, followed by a fish and chip supper at Bizzie Lizzie’s near the main car park. Members should meet on the car park at 5.45pm.
Settle
Church news: Settle Parish Church. A variety of well attended Easter services took place at Holy Ascension last weekend from the traditional Holy Communion to the relaxed style of the monthly, afternoon “Cafe Church”. Locals, visitors to Settle and children from Settle Primary School’s Recorder Club with their families swelled the numbers at Cafe Church. The children played brilliantly, were very knowledgeable about Hot Cross Buns and were a great credit to their teacher, Sally-Anne Brown and Settle Primary School. It was a pleasure to offer hospitality to so many folk at this special Easter celebration.
Next month’s Cafe Church is on Sunday 15 May at 3pm.
Settle’s Pop Up Pantry opens again tomorrow, Friday 22 April, at 11am till 12noon.
On Sunday 24 April Revd Jules Cox leads the service of Holy Communion at 11am.
Easter Dawn Service: 21 people gathered around a fire to welcome Easter Day together in Settle. The Chair of Churches Together in Settle & District, Revd Stephen Dawson, led the time together, which was followed by a simple breakfast at the Quaker Meeting House next door, where the Resident Friends, Phil & Marian Mc Nicholl, served us.

Italian Circle: The next meeting of the Skipton Italian Circle will be held on 28th April in the Parish Rooms at St Stephen’s Church, St Stephen’s Close, Skipton BD23 1TN. Our speaker, Ian Adams, will give a talk entitled ‘Art, Power and Patronage in Early Renaissance Florence’. Join us from 7.30 pm for light refreshments, greetings in Italian or English or a glass of vino! Admission is free to members and £5.00 for visitors.
