FAIR TRADE signs at the entrance to Skipton would be a fitting tribute to former mayor, the late Alan Hickman, heard the annual meeting of the town.
Lesley Higson, of the Skipton Fair Trade group, reminded councillors that the town had been given Fair Trade status in 2014, but few people realised it.
There was the annual Fair Trade Fortnight, but no signs at the entrance to the town like other places had she told last week's meeting.
Cllr Hickman, who died in April aged 80 years old, was a keen supporter of Fair Trade and half of the donations at his thanksgiving service on May 13 had gone to the Fair Trade Foundation, she said.
"Being a Fair Trade town is something to be really proud of. It shows that people care about other people.
"Fair Trade applies to this country too. Dairy farmers are not getting enough money, it is just not about distant places, although it is fair to say people in developing countries suffer the most."
She added: "I think it would be a great tribute to Alan if we got the signs. The Fair Trade group is willing to contribute 50 per cent and we would like to see the town council moving forward on this."
