A RIDING for the disabled group is celebrating the end of a very successful first year with the Buckstone Equestrian Centre, in the countryside above Sutton-in-Craven.
The Otley and Dales RDA Monday group says it is delighted with the horses and ponies at the stables, the facilities and the warm welcome its members have received from owner Sue Houlker and her staff.
Over the year, the group has seen the retirement of Jacky Murfin, a volunteer for more than 30 years, and also of Wendy and Bob Woodham.
Jan Wheelock, from the RDA group, said: "Wendy was a much valued coach and Bob was wonderful at making equipment for us and always being there to volunteer. We enjoyed two afternoon teas at Herriots, Skipton; and Moss and Moor, Ilkley to give them proper send offs with many thanks."
The group recently held its first open day, to which all parents of current riders were invited.
Children from Embsay and Greatwood, Skipton, schools have also enjoyed regular sessions with the group.
Jan said: "Parents were astonished as to what the children had achieved during the year – the first time they had ridden for two years or more due to Covid restrictions. The children cannot wait for Monday mornings and were eager to show their parents what they could do."
One parent wrote: "It has been fantastic for my son to be part of RDA horse riding. It has made a significant difference to his wellbeing, and he is so happy on the horse. He has become so much more confident and willing to try new activities."
A second parent said : "My son says he enjoys holding the reins and steering. Riding gives him the ability to control movement which he so lacks in his everyday life – a massive thank-you to the RDA for their selfless dedication and for providing such an enriching experience for the children."
Other parents have said how their children have improved balance and strength and better concentration while riding.
"One young lady who is almost blind has no fear around the ponies – she loves touching and grooming them and rides so positively," said Jan.
"Some of these children are moving on to senior schools in September – we wish them well and hope they can continue riding. We have plans afoot to take the maximum number of children in September for our regular Monday morning slots."
The group has four trained coaches and a team of loyal DBS checked volunteers. The group owns several ponies which are stabled at Hopewell Equestrian Centre, Otley where riding sessions take place on Thursdays and Sundays.
