Austwick Show: After a break of two years, Austwick Village Show was able to resume again this August in the Parish Hall. The usual high-quality garden produce, flowers, cookery, handicrafts and artwork entered for the show by both seasoned exhibitors and a sizeable number of new exhibitors. Consequently, the high number of visitors this year had much to admire whilst also enjoying the home-made cakes and refreshments on offer during the show. Due to the fine weather this year, the prize giving was able to take place outside in the Parish Hall garden where the prize winners were presented with their trophies and cups including a new prize this year for the best first-time adult. Full results are published on the village website www.austwick.org

Austwick W I: Margaret Watkins joined us for our August meeting. After a brief introduction to her varied life, particularly that in the Salvation Army, she went on to describe how she had become in possesion of 'Aunt Edna's' hats. Members demonstrated the wide array of types, styles and sizes of hats that she had brought along and great fun was had by all. The next meeting will be on Thursday September 8th, in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm when Brian Cowie will talk about the work of The Cave Rescue Organisation.

Film Nights: Once again the film nights in Austwick Parish Hall recommence on Friday 9th September doors open at 7.00pm for performances commencing at 7.30pm. Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This Sunday is the 10th Sunday after Trinity, St Luke reminds us of Jesus’ well-known words that his Church is ‘a house of prayer not a den of thieves’. There are many competing interests when it comes to the use of the Church and, at times, it is hard to strike the appropriate balance. Furthermore, the Church is also under great financial pressure to pay its way which makes commercialism almost obligatory. In the midst of this it can sometimes be forgotten that the Church is the House of God. The Church is a place of holiness and sanctuary synonymous with peace, justice and reconciliation. It is a place where we gather to worship God and to pray. It is the embodiment of God’s presence here on earth. Whilst there may be many competing interests, above all, we should take heed of the words of the Psalmist to ‘be still and know that I am God’, Psalm 46.

caroline@sandjsthompson.co.uk

Church news: A Messy Churchyard service was held recently at St. Oswalds and fortunately the service was preceded by three dry days which allowed the churchyard to be mown and the dried grass was raked into piles just before the service began. Four people from Leeds visiting church did wonder why the congregation was jumping into the cardboard boxes armed with bundles of hay but there was an explanation, 25 hay bales were being made. There were 23 adults and eleven children including four visitors who all enjoyed the Messy afternoon. The children also made Sukkah harvest shelters out of Ryvitas, iced together.

Ingleton

Ingleborough WI: At the August meeting Dr Mike Winstanley, retired senior lecturer in regional and local history at Lancaster University, gave

a fascinating illustrated talk to the ladies of the Ingleborough WI, plus four visitors who attended. Entitled, “The Lune Valley, Slavery, Sugar & Ships”, the talk explored some of the remarkable local trading, family, farming and religious connections with the port of Lancaster. Even though over the generations prosperous merchant families linked to Lune Valley businesses, such as cotton mills and furniture makers, accumulated land, lavish properties and plantations, the audience was glad to hear that Lancaster shipping records revealed few links to slavery in the West Indies.

If you usually eat alone do pop in for a meal and a chat. If you've a family to feed during the school holidays we can cater for you too.

We enjoyed a picnic on board which attracted several families of swans and ducks. Grateful thanks to the crew, all voluteers and all Settle chaps. Thanks also to this charity which offers boat trips to community groups and care providers throughout the holiday season, and beyond, on this specially adapted vessel.
