The next meeting will be on Thursday September 8th, in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm when Brian Cowie will talk about the work of The Cave Rescue Organisation.

Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This coming Sunday we hear, once again, the story of the Good Samaritan. The phrase has entered our language and the story continues to challenge us all to this day. So often our inclination is to walk on the other side of the road. To do otherwise risks ourselves and our security. However, the most unlikely person, the Samaritan goes to the aid of his brother instead. This story could not be more appropriate for our current times. We are facing an unprecedented energy crisis and many people will struggle to heat their homes and feed themselves and their families this winter. Do we walk by on the other side of the road or do we try and help instead? We can help collectively as a country through robust political action and we can also help individually. Whereas political action is rather out of our hands, we can help individually not least by donating food to food banks or simply going to help a neighbour in need? Rather than walk past or push others away, the Christian response is to take care of them instead. As Jesus says to his inquisitor - and therefore to each and every one of us – ‘go and do likewise’.

Raikes Road Burial Ground: As part of the Heritage Open Days come and hear the stories and see the gravestones of publicans and wine merchants of Georgian and Victorian Skipton as well as learn about this old burial site.

Raikes Road was open for just 30 years from 1846 to 1876 and is a one acre site with 2,000 burials. After its closure, it was neglected and forgotten for nearly 140 years until the Friends volunteer group was founded. Since then, much work has been done on the site and research into the people and their monuments is an ongoing project. This themed day aims to be both educational and entertaining, with stories of publicans and wine merchants - some good, some not so good. The Ground’s neglect has given rise to a Nature Reserve which the Friends encourage alongside its original purpose.

If you are researching family history throughout that period we will have copies of the Burial records to inspect. Event Times: Saturday 10 September: Tours at 1100 & 1400. No booking required. This is a free event, but donations will be greatly appreciated to help us to continue with our conservation work.

This is an ongoing project with much work still to do. The Ground is uneven and on a slope with hazards on site from robbed out/fallen gravestones. Part of the site is overgrown. Stout footwear is essential as well as keeping to the path.

Max 20 people per tour/session. About 45 minutes There are no facilities on site. Contact for the day: 07762758028.

Skipton with Thorlby

WI: Building with Cake was the title of Wendy Bentley’s August talk. Even the most imaginative person could not have foreseen the amazing result of ‘Building with Cake.’ Wendy had answered an advert for cake makers to model a Yorkshire building and display the result in a park in Newcastle. Wendy chose the Corn Exchange Leeds for her model. This building appeared on first glance to be fairly straight forward for someone who does not normally model with cake. However Wendy soon realised that the ‘round’ building is in fact oval! and there is glass on the roof. This, added to the tiled facade and carved roundels, gave food for thought. Work began and her husband photographed every stage of the operation. Melted glacier mints made an excellent glass roof ! The amazing model was then transported north to join a number of other models. After they had been looked at and discussed the public were free to sample. Wendy went on to model other buildings displaying the same enthusiasm and ability as on the original building. At one of the exhibitions a model of the Globe Theatre was on show; the straw roof having been made out of shredded wheat.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 20th September, at the Soroptimists, Otley Street at 7pm. The speaker will be Daphne Franks and the title is Justice for Joan. As always visitors are most welcome.
