Farnhill Parish Council: The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Institute next Thursday (27th), starting at 7.30pm. The first 15 minutes of the meeting will be set aside for public participation. All members of the village are welcome to attend.

North Craven Flower Club: Open Evening on Thursday, 10th November at Gargrave Village Hall. Tickets are now available from Club Members or by ringing 01729 840303. Cinema club: Will be showing the long awaited film, The Railway children return, on Friday evening in the Village Hall. The film is a sequel to the 1970 film and is set on and around the Keighley and Worth Valley railway and tells the story of a group of children who are evacuated to Oakworth during the Second World war. The film stars Jenny Agutter, Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay and John Bradley. Cafe style seating will be in place so please bring along your own refreshments. The Village Hall doors open at 7.p.m with the film starting at 7.30.p.m. Tickets are £5.00 on the door. Proceeds go towards the running costs for the community Library which is situated in the Foyer of the Village Hall.

Dance: A social dance will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday night from 7.30.p.m. Local band Silhouette will be providing the live music for their Crown Ball dance. Church news: On Sunday, 23rd, there are three opportunities for worship at St. Alkelda’s. Two of these follow the usual 4th Sunday pattern of 8am Holy Communion and 9.30am Family Worship. Cheese Festival: The Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival took place recently and the last house in our parish, Ashes Farm B&B near Ribblehead, took part all weekend. Jill & Steve transformed their breakfast conservatory into a pop-up café serving cheese sandwiches – and ham & cheese – soup and cakes.

Over 50s: The group met in the village hall, on Wednesday 12th October when members enjoyed an afternoon of quiz followed by tea and biscuits . The next meeting will be on October 26th for an afternoon of musical bingo, there will also be a raffle at this meeting. New members and guests are always very welcome.

Settle

Craven Conservation Group: A talk “World Biodiversity and Climate Change - Settle at the centre.” on Thursday 20 October at 7.30pm, to be held at St Johns Methodist Church, Church Street, Settle BD24 9JH. Why this title? This is an important time: Two vital international conferences are about to take place in November and December; this month WWF produced its 2022 Living Planet Report which says that that global wildlife populations having declined, on average, by 69% since 1970. And here in Settle we have two people involved in these topics who can tell us about them.

Kate Jennings - RSPB Policy officer - RSPB Head of Site Conservation and Species Policy, - researches upcoming RSPB campaigns. She will tell us about the Biodiversity COP15 and a variety of other upcoming nature and farming issues.

Dr Stephen Whitfield - of Leeds University is Associate Professor of Climate Change and Food Security and researches on Food and Agriculture in the UK and East Africa. He attended the 2021 Climate COP26 in Glasgow last year. There will also be a short period of discussion at the end when people can share and discuss what we can do locally.

Kate will also tell us about other issues facing us, and also some ways we can help. This list of issues includes: "EU retained law bill, Growth Plan & Infrastructure Bill, threat to future agriculture funding, The Glover Review of Protected Landscapes.

She will also mention the Curlew Recovery Plan and is pleased to hear of other local initiatives.

Judith Allinson, Chair of Craven Conservation Group says: "The world failed on all of its previous UN biodiversity targets, but we cannot afford another decade of failure. Come to this talk and learn about the "Once-in-a-decade plans to protect the natural world and halt its destruction" which will be decided in Canada in December."

Church news: Settle Parish Church. Plenty of good music last Sunday even though Graham Toft, our organist was on holiday. In our Morning Worship we enjoyed singing along with hymns recorded by the choristers of St Martin’s in the Fields whilst at the afternoon’s Café Church ‘live’ music was provided by talented musicians - Jonathan on keyboard accompanied by Roy on guitar.

We were very pleased to have a family from Manchester join us for Café Church. Next month Café Church meets on Sunday 20 November at 3pm. Also there’s another opportunity to enjoy informal worship on Sunday - 23 October - a new service at St Alkelda’s, Giggleswick, come along at 6pm for refreshments, the service starts at 6.30pm.

Stepping Stones: Today, Thursday 20 October, Jo Young from Leeds Diocese’s Children, Young People and Families Team is calling in on our Mother’s Union led ‘Stepping Stones’ toddlers group. We’re sure that she’ll enjoy meeting our lovely families and joining in with songs and crafts. ‘Stepping Stones’ meets every Thursday morning, during term time, from 10am ‘til 11.30am.

Harvest Service: Tomorrow afternoon, Friday 21 October, we will welcome the children and staff of Settle Primary School as they come into church for their Harvest Service. Parents, grandparents and carers will be joining them too. It’ll be good to see everyone and see the church full - do come early if you hope to have a seat!
