Bolton Abbey

Rector’s Message: On this Third Sunday after Easter we hear from our Old Testament reading about Joseph being reconciled with his estranged brothers. We all know the story of Joseph and his “amazing technicolour dreamcoat” but the reality behind the story is that there had been a serious falling out among the family. However, Joseph found it within himself to forgive them. In this final week before the Coronation we can see that nothing has changed. However, the coronation of King Charles III might be an appropriate time to seek reconciliation within our own family and hope and pray that the Royal family might do likewise. We can all play our part.

The Wednesday Nighters: On Wednesday 3rd May, in Bolton Abbey Village Hall at 7.30 pm, Richard Walton will catalogue the events of The Rise and Fall of Addingham Railway. He has researched this illustrated talk extensively from initially failed proposals from the 1860s, to its opening in the late 1880s until its demise and closure in the 1960s after 80 years of operation. Having heard this talk at the Addingham Civic Society I can say that it is a most interesting story, illustrated by photographs and maps of our local railway, well worth seeing. Everyone is welcome to join us, entrance is £3 and this includes tea/coffee and cake.

Modern Sequence Dances: There will be a modern sequence dance in Bolton Abbey Village Hall on Friday 5th May at 7.30 pm. Entrance is £6 and there is plenty of parking in the village car park.Fridays 7.30 pm to 11pm.

Church news: Christ Church: Sunday at 9.30am - Eucharist; Wednesday 9.30am – Eucharist.

Pinsuti’s Spring Concert: is at St Andrew's Church in Skipton on Saturday April 29, 7.30pm.This marks the changing season with a floral theme, showcasing two challenging but delightful modern song sequences: Lauridsen’s “Les Chansons des Roses” and Mealor’s “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal”. A more uniform lightness of spirit emerges in madrigals from the reign of Elizabeth I: a stylistically varied selection from “The Triumphs of Oriana”, compiled and published in 1601. Each of these ends with the same couplet celebrating “Fair Oriana” (who may or may not have been Queen Elizabeth I). With Royal Coronations in the air, we take the opportunity to sing some of the spectacular pieces from “A Garland for the Queen”, commissioned from leading British composers to honour the new monarch at her coronation in 1953. Intended as a counterpart to the 1601 collection, this “Garland” emulates its predecessor in its variety of moods and vocal combinations. The music responds to every aspect of celebration, and the choir will sing a selection of the 10 part-songs, namely those by Bliss, Ireland, Finzi, Rawsthorne and Vaughan Williams.

It will be an evening of variety and depth, contrasting the lightness and pace of the madrigals with the power of Bliss’s “Aubade”, with the “wistful nocturne” of Lauridsen’s “Contre Qui, Rose”. We hope you will join us on Saturday April 29th at 7.30pm, St Andrews Church Skipton, Tickets are £12 on the door or from Eventbrite, (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/shine-silent-flower-tickets-590392498857 booking fee applies). Free for under 18’s.
