Bentham
Ewecross Historical Society: The AGM was followed by speaker Jack Warbrick and a Jacobs Join supper. Mike Winstanley, Chair of the Ewecross Historical Society welcomed members and guest speaker Jack Warbrick, to the Annual General Meeting held in Bentham Methodist Church. Mike said that it had been a pleasure to be able to run a full lecture programme again, the first since 2018-2019. He gave a short resume of events, thanked the committee and officers and paid tribute to longstanding supporter David Gibson who died recently. All officers were re elected - chair Mike Winstanley, vice-chair Edward Huddleston, Secretary John Wilson, treasurer Melinda Elder and membership secretary Jenny Charnley. Margaret Owen has stepped down from the committee. Committee members elected were, Michael and Susan Bourne, Jenny Fisher, Alan Chesters and Jack Warbrick. Jack gave an amusing and informative illustrated talk ‘Going to the cinema in Morecambe in the 1950s’. He had frequented all of the nine picture houses in Morecambe, some more than others as the cheaper ones were known as flea pits or bug huts. The better ones including the Odeon and the Palladium were posh, also being used as theatres which hosted local talent shows. Jack showed before and after slides of the cinemas, some have been demolished but some others are now shops. He told of the films, like the three hour Ben Hur with Charlton Heston, the double seats at the back for courting couples and formidable Usherettes who kept order making it seem like a concentration camp at times. Finishing by saying that there is a memorial in Torrisholme Cemetery to ‘All who worked in the Cinematographic Cinema in Morecambe’, happy days. The evening concluded with a Jacobs Join supper, where members mingled and had a chance to talk. Summer outings are to be planned and the next meeting will be on September 25.
Bolton Abbey
Rector’s message: This weekend the country will celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. It is the first coronation for seventy-five years and so will be a new experience for the vast majority of the country. At the coronation, the King will take an oath to govern the Peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and other Territories as well as maintaining and preserving inviolably the settlement of the Church of England. Whilst it is constitutionally proper to swear to uphold the National Church, it is clear that the King wants also to protect the diversity of our country, by being the defender of Faith itself. I believe this is something that the vast majority of the country can rally around. Whatever our faith, we pray especially for King Charles III and his Queen Consort this weekend, and join together to proclaim “God save the King”

Church news: Settle Parish Church. Last weekend saw many visitors to Holy Ascension. On Saturday morning folk from the Ewecross and Bowland Deanery, and beyond, got creative at the art workshop, "ReCreate: Art and Wellbeing", led by Linda Baines and Shaeron Caton Rose.
Sunday's, 5th Sunday of the month 3 Parishes service of Holy Communion, was an occasion to mark the retirement of Revd Paul Fisher after 53 years of church ministry. It was wonderful to have St Alkelda's church choir, led by Ellie Everhart, join us. Music was a feature of the service as Paul Fisher is a talented organist, has written many pieces for the organ and has led recitals at Holy Ascension, playing our elderly but still magnificent Binns organ. On Sunday our organist, Graham Toft, was putting it through its paces. Afterwards, as we enjoyed the refreshments Paul, who has been a member of the local clergy team for a number of years, handed back his set of church keys to Revd Julie Clarkson. We wish Paul and his wife, Sue, a long and happy retirement together.
Pop up Pantry: Unfortunately Settle's Pop Up Pantry, (Settle's Food Bank), is still in demand after being set up more than two years ago. It's stocked up daily, often several times a day. But the need is still great. So please, if you are able to do so, could you possibly pop an extra item or two into your weekly shop and donate to the 'Pantry'?
Coronation Day: This Saturday, Coronation Day, the first Saturday of the month, you are invited to enjoy our delicious "right royal" Bacon Butties as you watch the live stream of the ceremony on the screens in church. Also we are delighted that Sally-Anne and Gabriella - the Passerini Brown Duo - are to join us again. They'll be playing and encouraging everyone to join in singing some favourite traditional songs for the occasion. Butties etc served from 10am, ceremony screened from 11am.
