FIREFIGHTERS from Skipton, Settle and Grassington joined forces to put out a wildfire that broke out on Skipton Moor, off Shortbank Road, yesterday (Tuesday) evening.
Crews responded to a call at 6.29pm and used specialist equipment, an Argocat, knapsack sprayers, wildfire tools and beaters to put out the fire which had spread to an area of moorland measuring 100m by 20m.
A spokesperson for Skipton Fire Station said: "With the risk of wildfire currently at its highest for the year please be mindful of how you dispose of cigarettes and only use barbecues in designated areas as heat can transfer very quickly in the already incredibly dry ground."
The fire and rescue service has already advised: "Please think before considering using a disposable barbecue or when you’re out in the Dales and disposing of cigarettes. The results can be catastrophic.
"Please enjoy the sun but be responsible and think wildfires."
