Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This Sunday is the fourth Sunday after Trinity and the theme of the readings is fertility. The Old Testament reading is what is known as Hannah’s Prayer where she gives thanks to God for the birth of her son Samuel. The New Testament reading records the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth who are also both with child. In a world where fertility rates are dropping, it is worth reminding ourselves that fertility was also an issue for many couples in the Bible. The Bible records the suffering this caused and reminds us that God shares in this suffering. It also reminds us that that God is a God of knowledge who can often help us overcome. We remember this Sunday all those struggling to conceive and give thanks for those who, like Hannah, Mary and Elizabeth have been blessed with children.
