A TEMPORARY 40-mph limit has been brought in on a section of the A59 at Kex Gill because of the poor state of the road.

Motorists using the A59 from Skipton to Harrogate will be subjected to the speed limit until at least the autumn when the road will be closed for two weeks for resurfacing.

Barrie Mason, North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for highways and transport, said: “We have introduced a 40mph speed limit on a section of the existing A59 at Kex Gill due to the uneven road surface.

"This will only be in place until we carry out a resurfacing scheme. A start date is yet to be confirmed but we anticipate early September, lasting for two weeks under full road closures with signed diversions in place. We will notify the public in due course.”

Work is underway on the £68million realignment of the A59 at Kex Gill and is expected to be completed by the spring of 2025.

The long-awaited project will see the landslide hit section of the A59 replaced with a new section of road from the turn off to Thruscross Reservoir joining up with the A59 at the Otley turn-off.

The Blubberhouses end of the old route will remain open for farm traffic, but the Skipton side will be left to 're-wild'.
