A THIRD annual production sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorns from Gerald Turton’s renowned Upsall herd near Thirsk will take place at CCM Skipton Auction Mart this Saturday, August 12, with another strong catalogue entry of 47 head, representing some 20% of the current holding.
Going under the hammer first are nine cows with calves at foot - six females and three bulls – with a trio of the cows classified Excellent, namely Lot 1, Sapphire X919 of Upsall, Lot 7, Clipper X1240 of Upsall, both EX92, and Lot 2, Sapphire X1298 of Upsall, EX90.
Lot 7 is a 2017-born Grenadier daughter who stood reserve junior female champion at the Great Yorkshire Show when exhibited as a yearling. She is herself a mother of four and will be sold with her latest calf, an April-born Nelson daughter, having again been scanned in-calf to Dingo.
The cow and calf outfits will be followed by three in-calf heifers due to calve January and 26 maiden heifers.
Once again, all the females are from recognised, highly-proven Upsall lines – Tessa, Clipper, Sapphire, Ury Maid, Jilt, Augusta, Nonpareil, Gem, Victoria and Marigold. Top Upsall stock bulls going back to some of the best-known names in the breed again feature in the line-up, notably Mandalong and King David, along with Grenadier, Lucca, Nelson and New Line.
Among many likely to catch the eye are Lot 15, Tessa X1659 of Upsall, a March, 2022, Mandalong daughter whose dam is a sister to the highly regarded Dingo of Upsall. She is a full sister to the 4,100gns top price maiden heifer in last year’s sale.
Lot 35 into the sale ring is a June, 2022, maiden heifer, the New Line daughter, Ury Maid X1721 of Upsall, whose own dam stood champion at the Thirsk Calf Show, while her granddam was the 2016 Great Yorkshire champion.
“It is undoubtedly the best bunch of females that have ever been presented for sale from the Upsall herd,” said long-time Scottish stockman George McCulloch, who with his wife Maureen continues to manage Britain’s older Beef Shorthorn herd, famed for its quality and heritage, so successfully.
Pre-sale viewing is available on Friday 5.30-7pm, with the sale itself scheduled to begin on Saturday at 11am. Ringside bidding will also be supported by a live online bidding facility for those unable to attend in person.
