A FARMER can build a new agricultural building at his farm in Halton West, near Skipton, after being told it falls within general permitted development.

The new 195ft by 55ft shed at Long Bank Farm does not need the prior approval of North Yorkshire Council which has said the development can go ahead without the need of a planning application.

In papers submitted with the prior approval notification, it is stated that Long Bank Farm is a successful dairy operation with 220 dairy cows plus young stock. The farm also provides grazing for sheep in the winter with around 300 acres of grazing land.

It states: "The proposed building is required to provide additional capacity for a growing herd of dairy cattle and will include cubicles for dairy cows. The design of the building has been carefully considered with the welfare of the cattle in mind to ensure the most efficient use of space."

It will be built out of precast concrete panels and timber Yorkshire boarding with clear polycarbonate sheets for the roof 'due to their positive impact on animal welfare'. It will be built next to existing farm buildings and will be serviced from the same yard.
