Bentham
Ewecross Historical Society: The group met for the first meeting of the season in Bentham Methodist Church on Monday, September 25th. Mike Winstanley, chair, welcomed Heather Lane, honorary curator of the Settle Folly, the Museum of North Craven Life. With the aid of slides of plans, models and before and after depictions of the renovations, Heather revealed the extraordinary history of this iconic Grade 1 Listed building. Named New Hall in 1679 when it was built by Richard Preston round an existing tower which he incorporated into his design, adding an extra floor to the tower which can only be entered by a very small hatch in the ceiling. Richard, a Lawyer, with a practice in London as well as Settle flaunted his wealth, or possibly his wife’s by building his magnificent house next to the main road. The speaker told of the Inventory following his death in 1696, when items from the farm with two barns were brought to the house to be valued. His Daughter Margaret then sold the estate to William Dawson, it stayed in the Dawson family until 1983, being let to various tenants, and divided into two or possibly three dwellings. These included a baker, a fish and chip shop and an antique shop. The North Craven Building Preservation Trust bought part of the building in 1996 and opened it to the public in 2001. Renovations, still ongoing, included re-roofing and using hot lime to re render the walls. Many of the audience meet friends at the Coffee House at the Folly or take visiting friends round the Museum which is still receiving collections from the local area. At the next meeting on October 30th, Angus Winchester will speak on Common Land.
Bolton Abbey
Rector’s message: On this Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity, we are reminded of the very first commandment which is to ‘love the Lord thy God with all thine heart and with all thou soul and with all thy might’. When we think of the ten commandments we tend to think of specific prohibitions and somehow overlook the very first commandment. However, this commandment is the first for the very good reason, namely that it the most important commandment of all. Indeed, if we obey this commandment then it is likely that the rest will follow suite. Let us dwell on this commandment this week and remind ourselves of the most important commandment of all.

Unfortunately she has now decided to step down as the event organiser, however the tradition will carry on with Sue's daughter-in-law Rebecca Pickup and her friend Jackie Walker taking on the role as joint organisers.
Sue would like to take the opportunity to thank the multitude of local people from the wonderful Community of Ingleton who have assisted her over the years and the local public who have supported the event. She expressed special thanks this year to Leslie Howarth who provided ten baskets of prizes. To her son Stephen and his wife Rebecca and Jackie & Veronica for their unstinting support. To Val & Jen who ran the kitchen and Anna who produced all of the posters and Edward and Dorothy who helped put all of the tables away after the event. Finally she would like to give special thanks to the person who paid for the room hire for the event.”
