RENOWNED performer, Robert Lloyd Parry, will reprise his role as MR James, master of the gothic ghost story, in two Halloween performances at The Folly in Settle.
The author, an eminent medieval scholar, first performed the stories to friends at King's College, Cambridge, where he was a fellow and later Provost.
In 1904, MR James wrote: "If any of my stories succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall, or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained." Readers and listeners have been enjoying his tales ever since. Despite more than 350 years of history, The Folly is a spectacular but un-ghostly venue. A Victorian guidebook to Settle reports that, although there were stories of priest holes and hidden passages, 'unusually there is no ghost'!
Ghost Stories at The Folly will be on Thursday, November 2 and Friday, November 3. Doors open 6.30pm. Tickets from The Folly’s website or at the Museum admissions desk.
